RE: The iOS Measure App on iPhone 14 Pro Max, Measuring Up, At Last

2023-01-24 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I would just grab my good old talking tape measure and I'd have that picture
frame measured down to the sixteenth of an inch or, if I switched it to Metric
down to 1mm in half the time 🤣

But joking aside, nice to know it can do this, I'll have to try it with my 13
Pro some time and I can then use my tape measure to compare.

Subject: The iOS Measure App on iPhone 14 Pro Max, Measuring Up, At Last

Hello All,

I am writing this to let you know how impressed I am with Apple's native
Measure app, in iOS 16.3, running on my iPhone 14 Pro Max.

NOTE 1:

In order to validate the following results, I wore a blindfold and performed
each measure no fewer than 7 times, back-to-back, in order to insure
consistency.

NOTE 2:

I measured 3 items, the first two of which I already knew the dimensions. I
deliberately chose a third item, which I had never before measured in order to
test my personal accuracy.

NOTE 3:

While measuring I had a sighted friend, standing right next to me, use an
iPhone 11 running iOS 16.3, taking the same measurements to see if there was a
difference between the 14 Pro Max and the 11 results. Given the cost of the 14
Pro Max, I was delighted to discover that there was, indeed, a difference, not
in the accuracy, but in the target's ability to be measured, given the color
contrast, in the 14 Pro Max's favor.

NOTE 4:

While it was easier to obtain an accurate measure of a target using my vision,
at first, after a few tries with the blindfold, not including the 7
back-to-back measurements, listed above, I found it just as easy to use only my
hands to get an equally accurate measurement. In fact, near the end, I
actually began preferring to use my hands, only, as doing so allowed me to
focus more on the target and less on distinguishing the target from the surface
upon which it was placed or rested against.

NOTE 5:

VoiceOver was enabled on both the 11 and the 14, at all times.

NOTE 6:

The following results represent my measuring skills, only. Please keep in mind
that I have been measuring items for decades and, as a result, I have a firm
grasp of how to fine tune a hand movement in order to obtain an objective. My
point? Do not be discouraged if your results are not consistent or accurate.
Taking accurate measurements, like so many things in life, requires a great
deal of practice.

NOTE 7:

The following steps are suggested for VoiceOver users who are totally blind.

NOTE 8:

The following steps, while a bit over simplified, for readability, are, in
fact, the steps I used to obtain accurate measurements.

The first item I measured was a picture frame hanging on my living room wall.
The wall is white and the frame is dark brown. I mention this because the
greater the contrast in colors, the more easily VoiceOver can guide you in
taking a measurement.

1.

With the Measure app open, hold the phone in portrait orientation. You must
obtain / add two virtual points in order to measure the distance between them.
For example, if you wish to measure the width of a picture frame, hanging on a
wall, you will place a virtual point on the left side of the frame and a second
virtual point on the right side of the frame. Then, the app will tell you the
distance between the two points.

2.

Using a finger find the edge of the frame and either hold the phone so that the
center of the phone is directly above your finger. Then, remove your finger.
You want to hold the phone so close that VoiceOver will say something like,
"Too close," or "not in focus," etc. It may say, "Line not distinguishable,"
also.

3.

Pull the phone, slowly, back, away from the target starting point. When
VoiceOver stops announcing the error message, tap the onscreen "ADD" button.

4.

Now keeping your phone hand as close to the current plane as possible, move the
phone to the right side of the frame. As you move, VoiceOver will begin
announcing the distance you've moved from your starting point. When you reach
the right edge of the frame, tap the onscreen "ADD" button. Your measurement
is complete. You can hear the final results by exploring the display.

5.

To clear the results, tap the onscreen "CLEAR" button.

The second item I measured was a desk calculator. I use the same method as
described, above.

Let me state here that during the 7 back-to-back measurements of each item, my
results varied by no more than a quarter inch. While I would certainly not
trust my measurements enough to order a precision-demanding item, such as a
window screen, I would definitely trust my measurements enough to select an
appliance such as a refrigerator.

Now the third item I measured was a

doorframe are white and the wall into which the door frame is set is also

And it was here where the 14 Pro Max took the proverbial show in that it had
absolutely no problem distinguishing the actual door from its surrounding
objects, despite the lack of any color contrast, while the 11 could not even
come close. My friend was not able to get the iPhone 11 to add any virtual
points because the camera simply could not tell where the door began and
ended. In order to get the 11 to distinguish the door from its frame, we
had to open the door and shine a bright light on the door.

Now of course our results are hardly definitive but they are,

Yes, they do have an iOS app and I find it quite accessible. Could it be
better, there is always room for improvement, but I can open my SafeNotes and
read their context or I can pick either Roboform or iCloud when I am trying to
log in somewhere.

I have been using Roboform probably for more than 15 years and it has been a
reliable password manager for me. You can also have an unlimited amount of
so-called SafeNotes and while I have never tried to set one up with information
that is say 5 or 6 pages long, I don't think each SafeNote has a size limit,
either and if it does it's more than enough.

I have things like all my credit card numbers with expiry dates, CV codes and
corresponding phone numbers in such SafeNotes, also my bank accounts including
the bank's institution, transit numbers, routing and swift codes. I have a
SafeNote called Gift Cards where I write down the numbers and codes of gift
cards I sometimes buy with points, how much the card had on it, when I bought
it and when I used it. I also include what it was I bought and what, if any,
the balance remaining is. I have SafeNotes for my tech gear, e.g. Lenovo, HP,
Sonos etc. and here I have written down everything I ever bought, when I bought
it and for how much, serial numbers of printers, laptops and on and on.

I have of course a SafeNote called Apple where I have my 2-factor
authentication recovery key, I now added the advanced data protection recovery
key and of course in there as well are the serial numbers of my wife's and my
iPhones, our Apple TV, iPad etc.

I use a random 14-character master password for Roboform which I also change
from time to time and use nowhere else, Roboform data on their servers is of
course encrypted and I also use 2-factor authentication which for Roboform
means if anybody including myself tries to sign in on a new device, I get an
email with a 6-digit OTP (one-time password) code. I feel it's more or less as
safe as it can be.

I also have a Yubiko hardware security key which looks a little bit like a
small USB drive, but thinner with a button on it which you press to
authenticate. I haven't really started using it much yet, but plan to set it up
for my new Lenovo ThinkPad and Lenovo small form factor desktop computer in the
office as an additional way to sign in (I also have set up a PIN and on my
laptop I can also use face recognition and fingerprint).

I still have to explore all the other uses for it because it does also support
2-factor authentication for Dropbox and many more services, currently I am
using the Microsoft Authenticator app to generate my Dropbox 2-factor
authentication code.

Below is first a link to an article from The Verge about security keys and then
an Amazon Canada link for the Yubiko which is compatible with USB-A ports, but
they do make a UsB-C version as well:

Verge

Yubico YubiKey 5 NFC - Two Factor Authentication USB and NFC Security Key, Fits
USB-A Ports and Works with Supported NFC Mobile Devices - Protect Your Online
Accounts with More Than a Password : Amazon.ca:
Electronics

There is also a UsB-C version of this device available, but according to the
article from The Verge it does not include NFC and they also mentioned that
Yubiko was looking at making a version with a Lightning port. I would certainly
not buy a Lightning version now considering that next year it is highly likely
that the Lightning port finally disappears in favour of a UsB-C port and USB-C
is certainly the way forward at least for many years to come.

Best regards,

Sieghard

This is great feedback, Sieghard. Thank you.

To tell you the truth, I'm kind of afraid to enable the feature for fear of
losing the key.

I believe that with OS 16.3 one can actually use some kind of physical recovery

The tag that did read was great! I'm impressed with the amount of information

didn't think to try to read it with the phone app, which didn't work on the

Has anyone else had problems with tags that will not read?

office. I would get transferred and put on hold, only to have the call drop.
Tried 4 times. I know this pharmacy is short staffed. My goal is just to
get someone to check her equipment to make shure it's working properly, and
to make sure she is making the tags correctly. I find it frustrating that
she never indicated that she was reaching out for help.

The tag that did read was great! I'm impressed with the amount of
information that is available. The reader is very easy to use. I was so
frustrated that I didn't think to try to read it with the phone app, which
didn't work on the others before I received the reader.

Has anyone else had problems with tags that will not read?

Hi,
does she have buttons on her hearing aids?
If so there will be a volume button. They are may be a rocker switch up for up
and down for down that is if they are like mine. You may have an app where you
can change the volume also.
Max.

hearing aid volume

2023-01-24 Thread jkt4960
Hi,

My wife needs help adjusting the volume on her Phonac hearing aids. She has
a 13 ProMax running 16.2.x. This is the volume of her phones ring tone and
the text message tone that comes through her hearing aids via Bluetooth. I
am designated tech support here at home, but I'm not having success with
this problem. All suggestions appreciated.

Thanks,

Airplane mode shouldn't affect your ability to play offline content anyway,.
There must be another issue.

 Hi list!
I updated my ipod to IOS 15.7.2 today. After installing this update.
I also updated my apps including the audible app to the latest app
 version.

However, now whenever I try to read a downloaded book when not
connected to the internet, it comes up with the message please
connect to the internet to continue reading.
Does anyone know why this is happening? I have always been able to
read downloaded audible books without being connected to the
internet. This is a real problem, because my ipod is only
connected to wifi when I'm at home.
Is there some sort of setting that I need to change to restore the
ability to read downloaded audible books without being connected to
 the internet?

I have tried clearing the app from the app switcher and also
restarting my phone. I also tried signing out of audible and then
signing in again with no success.
Do I need to delete the app and redownload it? Or is there
something else that I should do?
If this is some sort of new feature with the latest audible app, is
there a way to return to to the earlier version of audible that
does not behave in this way?
 Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

So do you mean that the picture is not upside down, or do you mean that you
want to be sure that you are brailleing the front rather than the back of the

You could use the seeing eye app. That has a short text and a document feature
and its free.

Re: Right Way Up?

2023-01-24 Thread Richard Turner
Playing cards are right way up either way. the images are such that which ever
way you hold them they are right way up.
That is why if you purchase a deck of cards already brailled, they are brailled
on the top left corner either way you hold them.

Right Way Up?

2023-01-24 Thread Traci Duncan
Hi all, is there a scanning app that will let me know if something is the right
way up? I want to label some playing cards, but I would like to know that they
are the correct way up.

Thank you,
Tracy.

any tips on renaming an amazon musix playlist.

2023-01-24 Thread Chris Judd

Hello everyone,

I have created a few playlists in the amazon music app, and I want to
rename a few of them.

Every time I double tap on edit, voice over won't let me rename anything.
I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this, or if you can
please give me any tips on renaming playlists in amazon music?

Thanks,
Chris
