RE: Mute Switch Always Says "Unmuted"

I think people have to start mentioning exactly which phone they have since as
far as I can tell people who report having this issue all seem to be people who
have an iPhone 14 Pro, maybe also 14 Pro Max and regular 14, not sure.

Mark,
That is not my experience at all.
It says what it should say whether the phone is locked or not.
I just retested it.
For what it is worth, I use Siri Voice 4 female as my VoiceOver voice.

OK, update to my last post.

After reading Jenny’s post, I used the mute hardware switch when the phone was
both locked and unlocked.

1.
When the phone is unlocked, Voiceover performs as expected.

2.
However, when the phone is locked, regardless of the state of the switch when
the phone was unlocked, VoiceOver says, “Unmuted.”

Interesting, to say the least.

Hi,

Mine is strange. When my phone is unlocked, it will announce muted or unmuted
as it should. When I lock it and press the side switch, then it says whatever
it was on before I locked the phone. So, if my phone was on muted, the phone
will say muted even when I flick the switch up. When I unlock it again, all is
well.

I found this most interesting. I think it started in iOS 16, but maybe not. If
I move the switch on the side of the phone, either way VoiceOver says
"unmuted." It does this on n XS, a 12 Pro Max and a 14 Pro Max.
However, even though VO says "unmuted" for both positions, the phone sounds are
definitely muted when the switched is moved to the back of the phone, and
restored when moved to the front. Anyone else ever notice this?

2023-03-01 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
This has been fixed at least for me as of just now (9:30 PM Pacific Time).
My subscriptions read again perfectly with when they expire/renew etc.
This is not iOS dependent since as Davy reported, this was happening on iOS 15,
the public release version of iOS 16 as well as the Beta.
When I checked it tonight it already worked for me before I upgraded to iOS
16.4 public beta 2 and it still is fine after the update.

I received a reply from Apple Accessibility this morning which states that they
are aware of the issue and they are investigating.
I assume this may have had something to do with the App Store and certain App
Store changes have always been done on the backend and they are not necessarily
connected to iOS itself which would explain why this is happening with iOS 15,
iOS 16.3 as well as iOS 16.4 public beta.
I would think this is something which Apple will fix sooner rather than later.
As for using screen recognition this still does not work for me even if I wait
10 seconds or 20 seconds, I have backed out of subscriptions after turning it
on and gone back and it does not give me anything except what I also see
without screen recognition.

Although it wouldn’t be ideal by any means, when I checked just now, I could
turn on screen recognition while in the list of apps to which I was subscribed,
and I could then actually view that list of applications. I could also double
tap on one of the apps to which I was subscribed, then turn off screen
recognition, And then I could see the option to cancel that subscription if I
wanted to do so.

RE: ultiple message notifications

2023-03-01 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
And what you are saying about seeing the same messages over and over, it is not
the actual message you see but the notification either on the lock screen or in
the notification centre (or both).
If you clear these notifications and delete the message then it's gone or, as I
said before, you can turn off to have message alerts and previews showing on
the lock screen or in the notification centre.

Hello all
I never solved the problem of having messages only announced in

Now I have the same messages I have deleted from inside the message app coming
back over and over again over 3 or ore days. This also never used to happen.
Look, if I deleted a series of messages or just one, I do not want to see them
over and over again.
I really hate redundancy.
I think it’s time to call Apple Accessibility. There appear to be two parallel
universes when it comes to where messages are being presented. Please just
leave them in the Message App and I will see them on the in the doc which will
say something like 4 new messages, and I can hit on that and respond to them
once Mess App is open. Get rid of that unnecessary other place where reminders
and other announcements show. One reminder is enough, I don’t need a list of
all things for the day to show up in the notification center.

A quirky iphone issue

2023-03-01 Thread colleyd1952
I have IOS version 16.3.1 on my phone and am having an issue with all of my
bluetooth earbuds and airpods. When I start to make a call they are all
paired to my phone. But as soon as the call connects and starts to ring, or
when the person answers, they become unpaired, or at least I can no longer
hear anything using them. I either have to turn them off and back on again,
or put them back in their case for a couple of seconds and them put them
back on again. The phone is then automatically connected again. I wouldn't
think this was strange, but I have both the airpods pro II and III, the
Treks Air, and a few others, and the same thing happens no matter which pair
I am using.

Is there some setting I am missing or something I need to do to correct this
issue?

OverDrive app being retired

2023-03-01 Thread R Van Lant
My local library had an article in the March newsletter saying Overdrive is
being discontinued by the developer at the end of April. We are being told to
use Libby instead. One thing I noticed when I was reading the benefits listed
for Libby is that it says you can transfer books to Kindle. I haven't
researched it to see if that means the Kindle app, wherein we could use
VoiceOver. I don't have the time to read more now, but saved this Libby help

RE: New clean energy charging feature on iPhones ...

2023-03-01 Thread R Van Lant
Sorry the original link didn’t work – maybe since I shared it from the app.
Here is the link on my desktop website and the text of the article below the
link:
https://www.denver7.com/news/technology/new-clean-energy-charging-feature-on-iphones-raising-eyebrows-among-some-users

New clean energy charging feature on iPhones raising eyebrows among some users
(denver7.com)

DENVER — When our phone's battery gets low, we're usually in a mad dash to find
the nearest charger to give us a boost, but a new iPhone feature intentionally
charges at a slower rate to help the environment.
Apple caused quite the stir on social media with the new feature called clean
energy charging. One Twitter user wrote, “They snuck this in on us.” Another
said, “If you noticed your iPhone is charging a little slower recently, it may
be due to a new updated setting Apple added.”
The feature is set to the "on" position as a default, but it’s easy to turn
off. Those with iPhones can go their phone’s settings, then battery, then
battery health and charging and then clean energy charging. You then click
"off."
“Apple is moving toward reducing the carbon footprint of all of our devices,”
said Dr. Steve Beaty, professor and chair of computer sciences at Metropolitan
State University of Denver.
The feature slows your phone’s charge during peak hours of electrical use. It
also uses location information to slow your charge if you’re in a region of the
country where the grid uses higher carbon emission electricity and less solar
and wind.
Experts are at odds about whether this is good or bad.
“Most people think, and I think appropriately, ‘Hey, it’s my iPhone at my
house. How much could it matter?’ But when we start looking at hundreds of
millions of devices all over the world, to a certain degree, why not do this?
Why not slow things down?” said Beaty.
“I don’t think this really appeals to the younger generation,” said Darin
Duber-Smith, senior lecturer at MSU Denver and green energy consultant. “I
think they’re very cynical about whether companies can really do anything about
trying to save the planet, and rightfully so. These companies can really do
nothing more than minimize their negative impact on the environment. They can’t
really help the environment.”
Duber-Smith says green energy initiatives are putting more stress on the grid,
and companies like Apple are working with the government to modify consumer
behaviors because of that stress.
“It’s green washing,” he said. “It’s when you’re trying to make your company
look more sustainable or greener than they really are. The grid is very
stressed, and as we put more onto the grid, i.e. electric cars, it’s only going
to get more stressed.”
On the other hand, Beaty sees this feature as encouraging smart consumption
among phone users and says the location feature is intuitive.
“It won’t slow down charging at what it considers an unusual place,” Beaty
said. “So, for example, it might slow down charging in the evening at your
home, but it won’t slow down if you’re plugged in to a charger at an airport or
hotel.”
“If I was Apple, I wouldn’t use the term clean energy,” said Duber-Smith. “I
think that’s the problem. What you’re really doing is, it’s an energy saver
function.”

good, but before sending this message, I checked again,

Incidentally, I tried Siri 4, and it said something every time I flicked pass
somethings, like settings zoom or some word, I couldn't quite hear what it
said. I just went back to Samantha Enhanced.

Hello all

I never solved the problem of having messages only announced in
the message App which sits at the bottom of my home screen in the Doc.

After an update to 16, suddenly, I get the same notifications in
something on the home paged called “the notification center.” I do not want to

which never clears them all out even if I hit clear, or clear all. There are too
many options that sometimes that show that I have no need for .

You are right; I tried it locked. That is pretty weird.

Could that be because the switch is locked as well?

OK, update to my last post.

After reading Jenny’s post, I used the mute hardware switch when the phone
was both locked and unlocked.

1.
When the phone is unlocked, Voiceover performs as expected.

2.
However, when the phone is locked, regardless of the state of the switch
when the phone was unlocked, VoiceOver says, “Unmuted.”

Interesting, to say the least.

Hi,

Mine is strange. When my phone is unlocked, it will announce muted or
unmuted as it should. When I lock it and press the side switch, then it says
whatever it was on before I locked the phone. So, if my phone was on muted,
the phone will say muted even when I flick the switch up. When I unlock it
again, all is well.

That is just something you'll have to get used to. While you can quickly
adjust the playback speed of whatever zip file you are reading, whenever you go
to the new file to read, it always defaults to 100%. There is nothing that can
be done to change this.

RE: Mute Switch Always Says "Unmuted"

2023-03-01 Thread Richard Turner
Mark,
That is not my experience at all.

That is just something you'll have to get used to. While you can

RE: Mute Switch Always Says "Unmuted"

2023-03-01 Thread chrisjudge1967
I have a 13 pro. I just tried it and it reports muted and unmuted as it's
suppose to.

Subject: Mute Switch Always Says "Unmuted"

I found this most interesting. I think it started in iOS 16, but maybe not. If
I move the switch on the side of the phone, either way VoiceOver says
"unmuted." It does this on n XS, a 12 Pro Max and a 14 Pro Max.
However, even though VO says "unmuted" for both positions, the phone sounds are
definitely muted when the switched is moved to the back of the phone, and
restored when moved to the front. Anyone else ever notice this?
