Hi Carolyn,

I also have Bluetooth hearing aids, and when I am using them, I am getting the
sound rather than the haptic feedback when I initiate Siri. Very interesting. I
imagine that is the way it is supposed to work.

RE: Annoying Emergency Update.

2023-10-27 Thread Carolyn Arnold
I get:

Bluetooth Switch Button on

Allow new connections. New Blutooth connections have been turned off at the
Control Center (that happened, when I was trying to get rid of the device I
used to have)

Devices

In progress

To pair an Apple watch with your iPhone, go to the Apple watch link

No better at the Control Center.

Hi Carolyn, if you flick down to more info on the device, that you no longer
have, and double tap on more info, there is a button that says forget this
device. Double tap on that, and the device will be forgotten.

You do not need to use a ringtone for alarms. Songs, mp3 or m4a work fine for
alarm sounds.

I think Richard already explained it, you absolutely can select a song from
your music library, but as Richard said, the key is that the song has to be
downloaded to your iPhone, if it's in the cloud it won't work.

She might need to convert that song to a ringtone first.

I just opened the books app, and found a book I had downloaded. I found chapter
1 after opening the menu and tapping around. Once I touched in the text and
flicked down with two fingers, it read and flipped pages just fine.
You cannot lock the phone and have it continue reading. If you want to do that,
that is a setting not just about VO. It is under Spoken Content under
accessibility. I'll look it up if you need it.

She might need to convert that song to a ringtone first.

I believe the original poster wanted to use a song in her music library for the

Hi Paula. I just changed my alarm sound and tried an alarm, and all worked
well. I went to my clock, then to add, I chose the time for my alarm, and
called it a quick test. I then swiped over and I saw sound and a button. I
double tapped on the button, and I was taken in to my various ring tomes, I
chose the one I wanted, then I went to the top of the screen and a back button,
then I double tapped on save. I was good to go from then on. All worked very
well. I don't use alarms much, but it is good to know I can set them if I wish.

Re: Reading Books

2023-10-27 Thread Richard Turner
I just opened the books app, and found a book I had downloaded. I found chapter
1 after opening the menu and tapping around. Once I touched in the text and
flicked down with two fingers, it read and flipped pages just fine.
You cannot lock the phone and have it continue reading. If you want to do that,
that is a setting not just about VO. It is under Spoken Content under
accessibility. I'll look it up if you need it.

2023-10-27 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I get this as well at times, but for the nmost part there does seem to be some
sort of learning/memory going on if I call somebody and have to specify which
phone, often the next time it will default to that.

Hi Mary. I have to say that I totally agree with you. Siri has gotten worse
instead of better IMHO. Lately, one example is a simple request to call my wife
who of course is in my contacts. I even specify mobile as part of my request
and I still get which entry I want even though I specified mobile which is
definitely one of the choices. So annoying. I'm seeing this in lots of other
examples where I'm asked to make a choice when it should not be necessary at
all.

I have folders too. I’ve been using iPhones for years. But after a while, you
get more apps. And besides, even if you know precisely what folder an app is
in, you still have to open the folder find the app and open it. If Siri worked
like it should, it would be much more efficient to just use it to open apps.
But even this morning, when I say Open such and such app and give the precise
name, it comes back and asks me which app do you want this one that one or
another one, all in the same general app category. This after I’ve stated
something specifically. Anyway, this just started with the so-called upgrade to
17.1. Feels like a regression to me. And there wasn’t that much to regress
from. I still prefer iOS to android. But really Apple. Get it together on Siri.

RE: Siri continues to be the dumbest of all dumb assistance.

2023-10-27 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
It doesn't matter if it has been reported, if you have this issue you should
report it because if only 1 person reports it Apple will probably pay little
attention to it. If 100 people report it maybe it gets higher priority.
This does happen for me at times or at least it used to, now not so much any
more, but usually if you wait it will restart after it beeps, at least for me
it usually does. Actually in the beginning it would sometiems just say "You
said" and then it would beep, but then it would go again if I didn't touch the
screen and the second time around it would usually read the entire message and
then ask if I wanted to send it.
As a final thought, any time I have to send a slightly longer message or one
which I know will contain words or names Siri is likely to get wrong and where
I have to edit them, I usually open Messages or Mail or whatever app and use
dictation because I can then dictate in smaller portions of text and I find it
is a lot quicker to edit something.

I hate it when siri doesn't finish confirmation of messages I send to people,
it beeps prior and cuts itself off midsentence so I feel I have to manually
send it either using dictation or braille screen input. It’s been doing that

RE: changing alarm sound

2023-10-27 Thread Paula Jordan
Hi Chris. The song is already downloaded.

I can’t find a place that lets me choose audio. Where is it. Maybe I’ll just
have to deal with the default which isn’t quite as annoying an 17.1 as the
previous sound. Thanks for the suggestions.

God bless!

OK, I just tried this myself, and at first, it did the same thing. I had the
song selected, but it still played the default sound for me.

But now it works for me. This is what I did.

Open music, go to library, and find that song.

Flick down, and download should be one of your choices. So choose download.

In order for any song to be used as an alarm sound, it must be downloaded to
your device.

If this for some reason does not work, then I have one more thing to try.

Go to music, swipe and choose audio quality. Make sure lossess is turned off.

I read online that this sometimes caused an issue. But you might not have to
do that if downloading it works.

Hope this helps.

5. Set an alarm time
6. Flick left to save.

I still get the default sound when I set an alarm. What am I missing?

Well, unless something changed in 17.0.3, when you double tap on sound, you
should be able to flick through to song, and double tap and pick something from
your library.

I'm on the 17.1 beta 3 and everything works as always.

So maybe trying 17.1 when it is released if it isn't working now will be the
answerÎ

Hi Carolyn,

I also have Bluetooth hearing aids, and when I am using them, I am getting the
sound rather than the haptic feedback when I initiate Siri. Very interesting. I
imagine that is the way it is supposed to work.

Oops! I apologize. I'm using the Books app that came on the phone.

It's probably been a year since I've read a book on my phone, and it may have

I don't read a lot of books on my pone, but just purchased one, and things
aren't working as I thought they did when I purchased my last book.

On my iPhone Se, with IOS 6.7, I can't seem to figure out how to read
continuously. When I touch the screen, it will read what I think is a
paragraph at a time. Is there a setting I need to change? or, a gesture I
can't seem to figure out?

Any help is appreciated.

Subject: Re: 17.1 just made iOS worse

I just played with this a little and I learned something.

If I am using the phone speaker, then it does the haptic vibrations instead of
the sound when pressing the button for Siri. But if I am wearing my Airpods,
then I do hear the sound.

So the sound is still there, but it is turned off for some reason when using
the phone speaker.

I do think Siri just has hiccups from time to time. I experienced this no
matter what version of iOS I was running.

For best results, wait 2 to 3 seconds after pressing the side button before
issuing the command.

I just asked Siri to open 5 or 6 different apps back to back, and she did them
all perfectly. And one of those was mail, of which I opened multiple times.

One tip:
You can train Siri to listen and understand you better.
Go to Settings, Siri and Search.
Even though I previously had this set to on, when updating to iOS 17.1, it
turned off the listen for Siri.
Just tap on Siri, hey siri, or both siri and hey siri to turn it on and do the
practice speaking.
After hitting the continue button, it will give you 5 short siri commands. It
will read the command to you, then you are to repeat them. Once done, you are
all set.

Hope this helps.

This sort of thing happens at a similar frequency with Siri being dumb, which is what we

Get it together on Siri.

to edit my home screen, group various apps by category into folders and so on.
Even when using the contacts listing in e-mails, text or phone calls, I add
all regularly used addresses to the contacts list and the only time I ever use
Siri to make calls/texts is if the addressee is not in my contacts list. Siri

I almost never ask Siri to be involved at all in apps.

I just upgraded to iOS 17.1. I’m grateful for the post about the language
rotor, which was unnecessarily unchecked. But now, Siri is even dumber than
before. When I ask her to open Pedometer, it asks which app Pedometer or
StepUp. I clearly said Pedometer. So why does it need to ask that? Further,
when I reply to it stupid question which app by saying Pedometer, it says uh-oh
there’s a problem. The app is there, and if I find it on my phone I can open
it. Really Apple, you are really behind the eight ball here. My Samsung device
opens stuff just fine with the much-maligned Bixby. Siri, worthless. Apple
really has fallen way behind the curve and this has nothing to do with AI. Get

Re: changing alarm sound

2023-10-27 Thread Chris Chaffin
OK, I just tried this myself, and at first, it did the same thing.  I had the song selected, but it still played the default sound for me.But now it works for me.  This is what I did.Open music, go to library, and find that song.Flick down, and download should be one of your choices.  So choose download. In order for any song to be used as an alarm sound, it must be downloaded to your device. If this for some reason does not work, then I have one more thing to try.Go to music, swipe and choose audio quality.  Make sure lossess is turned off.I read online that this sometimes caused an issue.  But you might not have to do that if downloading it works.Hope this helps.Chris ChaffinOn Oct 27, 2023, at 12:49 PM, Paula Jordan wrote:Richard and all, I am still having difficulty getting my alarm sound set for a particular song in my play list.  Here are the steps I take: Open clock Flick left to addFlick right to sound (the song title shows up Double tap on that.Flick left to the back buttonSet an alarm timeFlick left to save. I still get the default sound when I set an alarm.  What am I missing? Thanks for your patience.  Once this gets figured out I’m going to write the steps down just in case I loose the email.God bless!Paula and the pups From: viphone@googlegroups.com On Behalf Of Richard TurnerSent: Monday, October 23, 2023 7:23 PMTo: viphone@googlegroups.comSubject: Re: changing alarm sound Well, unless something changed in 17.0.3, when you double tap on sound, you should be able to flick through to song, and double tap and pick something from your library. I'm on the 17.1 beta 3 and everything works as always. So maybe trying 17.1 when it is released if it isn't working now will be the answerΠ Richard, USA ——"While striving for perfection, let us do what is possible." — John Wesley(Sent from my iPhone)On Oct 23, 2023, at 11:50 AM, Paula Jordan wrote:Hi all. Actually, I don't use Siri for opening apps either. I just tried it
yesterday for the first time after reading some of the posts here about
people having problems and it worked fine.

of other examples where I'm asked to make a choice when it should not be

I have folders too. I’ve been using iPhones for years. But after a while,
you get more apps. And besides, even if you know precisely what folder an
app is in, you still have to open the folder find the app and open it. If
Siri worked like it should, it would be much more efficient to just use it
to open apps. But even this morning, when I say Open such and such app and
give the precise name, it comes back and asks me which app do you want this
one that one or another one, all in the same general app category. This
after I’ve stated something specifically. Anyway, this just started with the
so-called upgrade to 17.1. Feels like a regression to me. And there wasn’t
that much to regress from. I still prefer iOS to android. But really Apple.
Get it together on Siri.

Hi Group,

I guess it depends on what you are using these automated helpers for. I
find Siri better than Alexa or Curtana for general knowledge. As far as
opening apps, I do that myself. Early on when I first began using the
iPhone, I learned to edit my home screen, group various apps by category
into folders and so on. Even when using the contacts listing in e-mails,
text or phone calls, I add all regularly used addresses to the contacts
list and the only time I ever use Siri to make calls/texts is if the
addressee is not in my contacts list. Siri never misses when I ask her
call (998) 555-.
I almost never ask Siri to be involved at all in apps.

the others.

I just upgraded to iOS 17.1. I’m grateful for the post about the language
rotor, which was unnecessarily unchecked. But now, Siri is even dumber
than before. When I ask her to open Pedometer, it asks which app
Pedometer or StepUp. I clearly said Pedometer. So why does it need to ask
that? Further, when I reply to it stupid question which app by saying
Pedometer, it says uh-oh there’s a problem. The app is there, and if I
find it on my phone I can open it. Really Apple, you are really behind
the eight ball here. My Samsung device opens stuff just fine with the
much-maligned Bixby. Siri, worthless. Apple really has fallen way behind
the curve and this has nothing to do with AI. Get your stuff together
Apple.

I'm on the 17.1 beta 3 and everything works as always.

So maybe trying 17.1 when it is released if it isn't working now will be the

I just played with this a little and I learned something. If I am using the phone speaker, then it does the haptic vibrations instead of the sound when pressing the button for Siri.  But if I am wearing my Airpods, then I do hear the sound. So the sound is still there, but it is turned off for some reason when using the phone speaker.I do think Siri just has hiccups from time to time.  I experienced this no matter what version of iOS I was running. For best results, wait 2 to 3 seconds after pressing the side button before issuing the command.I just asked Siri to open 5 or 6 different apps back to back, and she did them all perfectly.  And one of those was mail, of which I opened multiple times. One tip:You can train Siri to listen and understand you better.Go to Settings, Siri and Search.Even though I previously had this set to on, when updating to iOS 17.1, it turned off the listen for Siri.Just tap on Siri, hey siri, or both siri and hey siri to turn it on and do the practice speaking. After hitting the continue button, it will give you 5 short siri commands.  It will read the command to you, then you are to repeat them.  Once done, you are all set.Hope this helps.Chris ChaffinOn Oct 27, 2023, at 11:17 AM, Richard Turner wrote:I just said “Siri, open mail” and it opened mail, three times in a row successfully. I don’t know why they thought it was a good idea to remove the sound when holding in the side button, but that is one that writing accessibil...@apple.com and providing feedback through www.apple.com/feedback is a good idea.Richard, USA.“Reality is the leading cause of stress for those who are in touch with it.”  --  Jane Wagner from The Search for Intelligent Life in the Universe My web site: https://www.turner42.com From: viphone@googlegroups.com On Behalf Of Steve MatzuraSent: Friday, October 27, 2023 7:46 AMTo: viphone@googlegroups.comSubject: 17.1 just made iOS worse I've been waiting for 17.1 to come out to hopefully fix bugs I'd heard about and preferred not to experience. Re: Siri continues to be the dumbest of all dumb assistance.

2023-10-27 Thread Joshua Hendrickson
I only use Siri to make phone calls and occasionally ask for the time
and weather. Siri is working fine for me. I never use her to open
apps. I never saw the point when I can just go to the app I want and
open it. I only have 3 pages of apps so it isn't that many to go
through.

2023-10-27 Thread Evan Reese
Now that's weird because I told her to open TuneIn yesterday twice, and
she opened it without saying anything.

Also, I have told her to call a couple of numbers in my Contacts and she
said that she was calling them, although her inflection does sound
different in 17.1. But for the things I use her for, she's working here
the same as before the update.

But even this morning, when I say Open such and such app and give the precise

Try hitting deal with this later, or whatever it says.
If that doesn't work, then yes, call Apple Accessibility.

Subject: Annoying Emergency Update.

So, every time I check Settings, I get

One new item

I have gone to update emergency information. I have double tapped done. Still,
when I tap Settings, it says one new item. All the new information is there. I
have pressed done.
Yet, it still annoys me with that One New Item.

Am I going to have to call Apple Accessibility? I just don't know why it keeps
saying that. I have been tempted to press Cancel, but think maybe if I did
that, the new information would go away, and that I'd still be annoyed with the
message of One New Item.

Anyone have any ideas?

RE: 17.1 just made iOS worse

2023-10-27 Thread Richard Turner
I just said “Siri, open mail” and it opened mail, three times in a row
successfully.

I don’t know why they thought it was a good idea to remove the sound when
holding in the side button, but that is one that writing
accessibil...@apple.com and providing
feedback through www.apple.com/feedback is a
good idea.

I've been waiting for 17.1 to come out to hopefully fix bugs I'd heard about
and preferred not to experience. So imagine the look on my face when after
upgrading from 16.7.2 to 17.1 I said "Siri, open mail," and was answered with
"which one, phone or mail?". Rather surprised, I answered "mail," and was
immediately told something went wrong, please try again later. Well, later
hasn't come yet, because if I tell it to open mail, I get the same thing.

Also, I discovered that instead of playing a sound when I press and hold the
side button on my 14 Pro Max, I get the double-buzz like you would get if
VoiceOver weren't running. Haven't yet found a way to reverse this one.

But seriously, opening mail fails? Gimmy back my 16.7.2.

Annoying Emergency Update.

2023-10-27 Thread Carolyn Arnold
So, every time I check Settings, I get

One new item

I have gone to update emergency information. I have double
tapped done. Still, when I tap Settings, it says one new
item. All the new information is there. I have pressed done.
Yet, it still annoys me with that One New Item.

Am I going to have to call Apple Accessibility? I just don't
know why it keeps saying that. I have been tempted to press
Cancel, but think maybe if I did that, the new information
would go away, and that I'd still be annoyed with the
message of One New Item.

Anyone have any ideas?

RE: Be My AI Mentioned Amongst TIME Best Inventions of 2023

2023-10-27 Thread Richard Turner
Scott, et al,
I wrote i...@bemyeyes.com to ask about offering texting for volunteers
especially for the Deaf-Blind community.
Here is Hans' response:
"We have been looking into how we can help the deaf blind community, but has
not been able to create a really meaningful solution. However, I know that the
BMI AI solution is something that you can use as a blind person."

I suggest everyone who wants to see texting volunteers for help also write
i...@bemyeyes.com and request it.
Clearly all volunteers are using a smart phone, so I would think a texting
solution could be found.

Well deserved, but I still wish BME would work on developing an interface so
that one can text a volunteer instead of calling. There are some circumstances
where a blind hearing person may find this of value, but they're not providing
as much access to as many people as they could be. I understand be My AI works
with braille, but what I also understand is that those who can hear are able to
make audio calls to volunteers. Why can't DeafBlind people be given the same
access?
All of that said, yes this tech is very revolutionary, I just wish people would
start thinking in more broad terms sometimes. I've passed along the feedback a
few times on the lack of texting, hopefully if enough people ask for it they
will take it into consideration!

RE: Siri continues to be the dumbest of all dumb assistance.

2023-10-27 Thread Richard Turner
Actually, for the most part, I don't have issues with Siri. I think the fact
that the time it takes to get Siri's attention has increased a little.
If you use the side button or home button to get Siri, you have to keep it held
in/down for a bit longer than before.
If you are using Siri or Hey Siri under 17, I've started just saying Siri and
waiting for Siri to respond before making my request. That way I know it is
listening.

Re: iPhone Photos

2023-10-27 Thread Richard Turner
You can create a VoiceOver label for any photo in your library. The label will
not stay with the photo if you send it to someone else, it is just on your
phone.
Having said that, the steps are the same if you want to rename an app on your
screen.
To label anything, photo, icon, whatever, with VO, make sure the one you want
is in focus by touching it once with one finger. Then do a two finger double
tap and hold until you hear some tones and an edit box opens. You can either
write what you want, or paste something you have copied into that edit box and
then flick/swipe to the save button and do a one finger double tap.
As someone else said, if you want to copy the entire Be My AI description into
the photo, when you have heard the description, touch the screen with one
finger and swipe up or down to copy and double tap. Then close the description,
and do the steps above for labeling the photo and paste the description into
the edit box.
If you don't know how to paste something you copied. Ask.
