Thanks for the correction. I understand you are prioritizing your paying,
sighted, customers, that makes perfect sense.

And how many people on this list are not VoiceOver users? I suspect next to
none.

Your description in the app store does say free to VoiceOver users and since
this list is primarily VoiceOver users, I guess I didn’t see any reason to get
lost in the details.

Still waiting for those steps to get books into your app.

Oh, just to note that you did succeed to misquote even in that short post (this
post comes with lot of smiles, so no hard feelings regarding that):

My app is not free, it is just free for VoiceOver users. It costs 10$
otherwise. 97% of users of my app on Apple devices aren't VoiceOver users and
the same is for 89% of users on Android devices. So I just provide for free the
app that other people regularly pay as I have decided to do so.

Hi Richard,

I appreciate everything that you said here. I'll try to provide some
instructions but I do think that this is complicated especially on the
phone and I appreciate that you want to try it. And if you want to suggest
Bookshare the share option in their app you deserve a big thank you from my
side.

Just wanted to say that if people are interested and this is the only way
to provide the content to them I will rebuild the Bookshare support. I
built app from scratch for this new version and at the launch point this
was a clear and reasonable decision as it would require quite a work and it
doesn't appear that at least on the start many people would use it. But it
doesn't mean that this can't be reevaluated.

I am grateful that you made me think some more regarding that. I do highly
respect your opinion, as the times go by I have learnt that it is good to
do that.

Hello Listers,After reading the latest AppleVis entry about speech central, I'm puzzled. Having been a Voice Dream user since its initial launch, and following its changes and updates to the present, I'm really not convinced about Speech Central. It's so easy to load Voice Dream content, and PDF documents read well. My question is: What would make me even want to try any other program? I don't ask this question to invoke controversy, but to learn why some would prefer any other program over Voice Dream. If, at some point, another program is more efficient than Voice Dream, I'll certainly jump on that proverbial "band wagon". For now, I'm just wondering... and exploring. It seems like I cannot say anything about your app other than undaunted praise

Since you also cannot be bothered to explain your process of getting bookshare

I was willing to do that.

Richard,

I am not sure if you misquote me intentionally or unintentionally.

Either way, the correct fact is that I have supported Bookshare for 7 years.
All of the users of the app together in December 2024 downloaded 10 books from
Bookshare. Yes that is less of work to download those ten book for those 10
users ( than for me to write the support for Bookshare (and I would quickly
remind you on your statements on how much support is expensive for one app that
you love and how they need to charge immense amount for that).

I am not sure how you can blame me for Speech Central users (including if you
make the subgroup of VoiceOver users only) highly prefer to use PDFs, ePubs,
web and almost everything else except books from Bookshare. I did spend my
effort on non-profit basis for 7 years to support those people even if their
volume of usage wasn't something that justified the support. I would imagine
that this deserves some words like "thank you" or something similar. What
exactly did I do wrong?

Further I think that at the moment if someone is to be blamed it is Bookshare
as they do allow downloads from the website, but don't implement the share
function in their Reader app which would make importing into any app a piece of
cake. No need for any app in this world to write the support for Bookshare as
every app would support Bookshare.

I am not sure if you misquote me intentionally or unintentionally.

Either way, the correct fact is that I have supported Bookshare for 7
years. All of the users of the app together in December 2024 downloaded 10
books from Bookshare. Yes that is less of work to download those ten book
for those 10 users ( than for me to write the support for Bookshare (and I
would quickly remind you on your statements on how much support is
expensive for one app that you love and how they need to charge immense
amount for that).

I am not sure how you can blame me for Speech Central users (including if
you make the subgroup of VoiceOver users only) highly prefer to use PDFs,
ePubs, web and almost everything else except books from Bookshare. I did
spend my effort on non-profit basis for 7 years to support those people
even if their volume of usage wasn't something that justified the support.
I would imagine that this deserves some words like "thank you" or something
similar. What exactly did I do wrong?

Further I think that at the moment if someone is to be blamed it is
Bookshare as they do allow downloads from the website, but don't implement
the share function in their Reader app which would make importing into any
app a piece of cake. No need for any app in this world to write the support
for Bookshare as every app would support Bookshare.

2024-01-31 Thread Mary Otten
I have downloaded the update, but I have not yet downloaded any more books. I downloaded several recently, and after a lot of missing around and reporting to the developers, they all loaded. I still don’t know why, but now I have all these books and a couple of them I need to get read by the weekend for stuff. But I’m definitely going to try it. If it works, awesome. I am not at all excited about having to go through a big process to get books share books into an app. Thumbs down. Unless Voice Dream just turns into an absolute piece of junk, I’ll deal with it rather than have to deal with a convoluted process for just accessing books. In my opinion, that was not a good decision the developer of this app speech Central made. Sent from my iPhoneOn Jan 31, 2024, at 1:21 PM, Richard Turner wrote:I just downloaded it to try and immediately found out that to install books from bookshare you have to download the DAISY file and import it because the developer decided that customers could download the ten books per month that way rather than him having to take the time to program for their interface ... BTW, did you try the update to VDR today to see if it fixed your download issue? Sent from my iPadOn Jan 31, 2024, at 12:47 PM, Mary Otten wrote:I just saw this on Apple viz.. As the app was in the beta testing for more than two months some people may already know what the new version is about.
But during the beta period features were not publicly announced, that has happened for the first time just few days ago on the App Store.
This isn't just another update. It isn't even another big update. And it is hard to provide the comparison, but if you take any of the competing apps and their cumulative updates in the last 5 years the shear size doesn't even come close to this.
The full list improvements would require more than 1000 lines of text to tell. If we talk about new features, that would be still in hundreds of lines. Even major features are well above dozen of bullet lines.
So I would like to focus on just one thing that reveals all the magic behind the effort - the new Emulate book narration mode. This feature brings quite a bit of the soul to robotic voices. Check this benchmark using the Apple's Ava Premium voice on the same text in Speech Central and Voice Dream: https://youtu.be/lCbr8HqXUCc
Also you can check the same for Microsoft Ema voice in Speech Central and NaturalReader: https://youtu.be/HRiDafir-NY
Regarding the other features I'll just use the same list as I have used in the App Store:
- Design overhaul that maximises the space for the text on iPhone and adds sidebar functionality to the iPad
- Multiwindow/multidocument support on the iPad
- Instant mode for quick and simple reading
- Music Intermezzo - inject Apple Music into your listening
- Improved accessibility
- Improved sync - more comprehensive, robust and performant
- Numerous new settings options
- Siri voice command to start playing now works even behind the lock screen
As the app is free when used with VoiceOver, the best thing is to try it yourself: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/speech-central-ai-voice-reader/id1127349155

OK Ivan, could you give me your recommended steps for downloading the DAISY file from Bookshare and importing it? 2024-01-31 Thread Ivan Icin
Hi to everyone,

I am the developer and I can confirm Greg's answer to be correct.

I also appreciate that Richard wanted to take another look in the app. Some
improvements were based on his comments, and while we may have not agreed
on some things and possibly our conversation regarding them went further
than it should those suggestions were really helpful and I am thankful for
them.

The sad reality is that after 7 years of supporting Bookshare I had to
conclude that it is a less of a work for users to download those 10 books

to rebuild the support for the new app.

function within their reader app. That would make every app to support

Hello,
The only way to get bookshare books in the app is to download the daisy file
from the bookshare site and import that file into Speech Central. You download
the file into the files app on your phone.

I'd contact their customer service and have them verify for you, what
has been paid.  If overcharged, then they can either credit you if you
use their service to get your money back in a timely matter.  If you
don't use their service that often, than I'd demand a credit back to
your card that was charged.

I have in the last wee already had to eat, quite literally, a pizza

I have not had much success getting accurate info off bank cards with any

Perhaps others have a different experience.

Hello list,

please, do you know any tips and tricks to scan smal format documents like
debit card with voice Dream scanner?

As far as I know, Voice Dream doesn't need internet connection to scan
documents.

I mean when I get a new debit card, I would like to be able read Card number
without sighted help if possible.

My bank doesn't provide debit card number info in Braille. I know some banks in
some countries

do that.

I have a few other cards (e.g. bus pass and I sometime need its number for
online registration.

I know I can ask someone sighted to read it for me, but there are situations
when no one is around.

For now, I have card and ID numbers saved in my notes and I learnt them, but
I'm just curious.

I will not use Be my eyes or Seeing AI as they are online services, so I don't
feel safe to give them my credentials.

I tried to scan my bus pass card, I could rea some info, but not the number, it
said "card number", but there were different signs and symbols.

Thanks for help.

According to Bookshare's web site, it is supposed to show up under Add. But

My app Speech Central is completely free when used with VoiceOver. It has been
developed for 10 years and current official version should be more than
competitive with any other app. However for 10 years celebration in several
days there will be a new version that has over 1000 improvements, many of them
bringing improvements not available in any other app. I still haven't announced

They have two engineers working on it.

Here is what the update says:

Fix bug when loading content. Custom margins for PDFs, support for more audio
files and fix go to percentage

The Fixed bug while loading content is the relevant one to this issue.

I hope it solves it for those dealing with this.

Of course, signing out and back in may also help.

Have you logged out, then back in? I wonder if this would fix it, at least for
a while.

Mary, I agree with you completely all of the problems that you describe are
exactly what is happening to me. I asked it to download a book a lot of times
it will just say waiting, waiting waiting and then sometimes I can go back in
and open up the app and the title will appear but when I open it, there is
nothing there in the book will not read. I am so frustrated with the way. This
app is going and I too. I’m glad that I bought it before it turned into the
subscription model. It was way better when Winston ran it. I have reached out
to the new people and they don’t even get back to me. I am not sure what to
try next.

It may well be because I have a big Voice Dream library. But if it says

download complete, which it always does, I feel like I should be able to go

into my library and see it’s there. Not unavailable. Why is it unavailable?

And why God‘s name, since I have iCloud Sync enabled on both of my devices,

why doesn’t that work? I don’t even open it on my phone anymore because

there’s so many books that I’ve downloaded to my iPad that I know absolutely

if I open my phone there’s going to be a massive problem. So I suppose I

should just not have my phone answering with iCloud anymore. But then what

do I do when I finally get a new phone Probably next year? I just wish

these people would get into the guts of this thing and fix it.

Yes, calling Apple would likely solve it more quickly.

It could be they are wanting you to enable Apple Pay or Wallet or something and
you are missing the option to either do so, or select not now…

I personally don’t use either so I skipped it and it eventually stopped asking.

I don't know what the word limit is, but perhaps a text message?

RE: Be My AI and cookbooks

2024-01-31 Thread Richard Turner
Hi Larry,
When you are on the results screen, just touch anywhere in the text and swipe
up or down with one finger. You should hear Copy.
Double tap and then paste it where you wish.

I hadn't tried recipes. I will try that later.

Subject: Be My AI and cookbooks

My wife has shelves and shelves of cookbooks so I thought I'd shoot a page or
to with Be My AI and have been getting some amazing results. The program isn't
designed to be a text or document reader but it does amazingly well
considering. I've been trying to find a way to get the text results from the
Iphone into something I could transfer to e-mail or some other way to get it
into my PC so I could share it. Any ideas?
