you… I believe this will be most helpful to many of us.

The only problem is that, now I need to learn how to use Shortcuts. The

tutorials or recommendations for how to begin learning shortcuts to a

No need to ask Siri for help

Apple’s iOS 18 update includes a new accessibility feature that’s perfect for
anyone who wants easier access to their saved shortcuts. Called Vocal
Shortcuts, it lets you set a custom word that, when spoken, will launch a
specified shortcut. It’s perfect for power users and people with accessibility
needs alike.

Apple first announced the feature back in May 2024. In a press release, the
company said: “With Vocal Shortcuts, iPhone and iPad users can assign custom
utterances that Siri can understand to launch shortcuts and complete complex
tasks.” The company didn’t reveal anything else about the feature at the time,
but now that iOS 18 is available as a developer beta, we can get a better idea
of how it works.

For instance, you might want to launch a specific app simply by saying its
name. Or you could use a more precise phrase (like “edit a photo”) to launch a
set of actions that you’ve previously saved as a shortcut.

At the WWDC 2024 where Apple unveiled iOS 18, a lot of attention was spent on
how Siri was getting a major revamp thanks to artificial intelligence. The
company never mentioned Vocal Shortcuts, but it could turn out to be one of the
best changes coming to Siri for a wide range of people.

Siri finds its voice

If this feature sounds strangely familiar to you, you’re not far off the mark.
Before iOS 18, you were able to launch shortcuts using your voice, but this
process involved more steps. You would have to first invoke Siri, then say the
name of the shortcut you wanted to run. If your device was locked, Siri would
ask you to unlock it first before the shortcut could be launched.

Now, none of that applies. You don’t need to say “Siri” or “Hey Siri” to use
Vocal Shortcuts. As well as that, you can say a custom phrase instead of being
limited to the name of the shortcut, while it even works when your device is
locked (provided your shortcut doesn’t require your device to be unlocked, such
as opening an app).

That makes it far more convenient to control your Apple product using just your
voice. Whether you want a way to launch a shortcut when your iPhone is on the
other side of the room, or you have accessibility needs that make using your
voice the best way to manage an iPhone, iPad or Mac, Vocal Shortcuts will
likely be a welcome addition to your device, especially in combination with the
other accessibility tools coming in iOS 18.

Together with the wide-ranging AI features coming in iOS 18, it looks like Siri
might finally be getting the overhaul it’s desperately needed for years. It’ll
be fascinating to see if it’s enough to catch up with Apple’s rivals.

The article stated you did not have to use Siri, but since I’m not testing the
beta and this is a speculative article, it could end up being so, but Voice
control in general is separate from Siri. In fact, you don’t even have to have
VoiceOver on to use Voice Control. It is directed at people who cannot use the
normal gestures on the screen nor a keyboard.

So, time will tell.

RE: Screen recognition and editing rotor

2024-06-16 Thread Richard Turner
Well, on my 13 pro, using BARDMobile with Screen Recognition is awful.

In places it says Image, a white letter on a gray background … or something
equally useless.

If that is what a sighted person sees, I am glad they don’t have to use
BARDMobile.

Screen recognition was also useful when the new SiriusXM app was released. It
gave access to the mini-player which wasn’t seen by VoiceOver at all. If you
want to see what it looks like, and how it might be useful, turn it on while
using the BARD Mobile App, if you have it. It isn’t necessary to use the BARD
Mobile App but screen recognition give it a very different interface and gives
you a peek into what sighted users see.

Alan made me think of another point to make.

Since my Arboleaf app now works so well, in the VoiceOver Recognition settings,
under Screen Recognition, there is a place to select apps for which you want
screen recognition to turn on automatically when you open that app.

I added Arboleaf to that list, so this morning, when I launched Arboleaf,
screen recognition turned on automatically. When I exited the app, screen
recognition turned off.

A very nice feature.

Just to echo Richard's point, screen recognition should definitely be in your
rotor because apps are being updated continuously and in my experience,
developers are using more graphical objects in their apps. If you're noticing
an app that used to work and now VoiceOver doesn't seem to be speaking much of
anything, try using the rotor to turn on screen recognition for that app to see
if you get different results. I seldom leave it turned on for an app when doing
this but I expect you'll develop a routine that works best for you.

This is why one should put it in their rotor and try it on apps that are not

I agree, but using more graphical apps doesn’t mean an app has to be less

Re: Screen recognition and editing rotor

2024-06-16 Thread Alan Lemly
Just to echo Richard's point, screen recognition should definitely be in your rotor because apps are being updated continuously and in my experience, developers are using more graphical objects in their apps. If you're noticing an app that used to work and now VoiceOver doesn't seem to be speaking much of anything, try using the rotor to turn on screen recognition for that app to see if you get different results. I seldom leave it turned on for an app when doing this but I expect you'll develop a routine that works best for you. Alan Lemly Sent from my iPhoneOn Jun 16, 2024, at 10:14 AM, Richard Turner wrote:I have a scale that I weigh myself on that is Wi-Fi made by Arboleaf.  Their app became very difficult to use after a recent update.I decided to try Screen Recognition in their app; which has the same name, Arboleaf. It works perfectly with screen recognition, in fact, it reads much better.  The information it gathers like your BMI reads on one line now instead of having to flick to the next line, etc. In many cases, turning it on makes an app next to useless, but when it works, it works great. This is why one should put it in their rotor and try it on apps that are not reading well but leave it off for most apps. HTH,  Richard, USA"It's no great honor to be blind, but it's more than a nuisance and less than a disaster. Re: Screen recognition and editing rotor

2024-06-16 Thread Michael Irons
Are use the screen recognition some. I think having it in the rotor is definitely a good idea on some apps screen recognition makes it a little more usable. One example is the app known as the weather channel. I’ve been able to turn screen recognition on and have it read things in The Weather Channel app then otherwise I’d not be able to read. so, it is definitely a good idea to have screen recognition in the router and have it turned off. That’s the time I just turn it on when you need it. Sent from my iPhoneOn Jun 16, 2024, at 9:14 AM, Richard Turner wrote:I have a scale that I weigh myself on that is Wi-Fi made by Arboleaf.

2024-06-16 Thread Richard Turner
I have a scale that I weigh myself on that is Wi-Fi made by Arboleaf. Their
app became very difficult to use after a recent update.

I decided to try Screen Recognition in their app; which has the same name,
Arboleaf.

It works perfectly with screen recognition, in fact, it reads much better. The
information it gathers like your BMI reads on one line now instead of having to
flick to the next line, etc.

In many cases, turning it on makes an app next to useless, but when it works,
it works great.

This is why one should put it in their rotor and try it on apps that are not
reading well but leave it off for most apps.

HTH,
