Question About Various GPS Apps for iPhone

2014-06-25 Thread 'David Goldfield' via VIPhone
I realize that this particular topic is so vast, due to the amount of
available GPS apps, that we could probably have a separate mailing list
just to discuss this one capability. I also realize that my questions
could generate a variety of opinions but that's OK.
So, here's the thing. I'm relatively new to the iPhone and started out
in the world of GPS with the built-in Maps app, which I can use and, for
the most part, which I like. I've also downloaded several free GPS apps
that I'm in the process of evaluating and learning. One of the things
that I really loved about Maps was that I could have it constantly speak
my current location, which I found beneficial while on the train going
to work. Given the capabilities of many of these free apps, are the
specialized, blindness-specific GPS apps worth paying for? What
benefits can we get with Seeing eye or Blindsquare?

Issue with Live Stream Stopping After Locking iPhone

2014-06-25 Thread 'David Goldfield' via VIPhone
Normally, I can switch on a podcast or live stream from a radio tuner
app, lock my iPhone and have the stream continue to play. There's one
exception to this and that's with the EWTN app. When I load the app and
play one of their live streams, the stream plays until I lock the phone,
after which the audio stops. Is this a bug in the app or are there
certain types of feeds which don't play when the phone is locked. If
this information is helpful, when I play the feed Voiceover reads a hint
saying that I can tap to show or hide video controls. This is odd,
considering that this is an audio and not a video feed. Any thoughts or
suggestions would be appreciated.

I don't believe the EWTN app has either a settings button within the app
or an option in the main Settings app from the home screen. I will
likely write to them to see if they can verify and, I hope, address it
on their end. EWTN is the app from the Eternal Word Television Network,
which allows you to listen to live streams and on-demand shows from
their network.

Re: Question About Various GPS Apps for iPhone

2014-06-25 Thread 'David Goldfield' via VIPhone

Grant,
thank you for this detailed explanation. It helps, as I'm just trying
to determine what makes each GPS app different and advantageous over the
others. For me, what I'm really wanting is an app that can speak my
location while moving, such as when going to and from work on a train,
as well as having the ability to program a route to get turn by turn
driving directions. thank you again.

Hello David, BlindSquare is an exceptional app in that it can announce your
current heading, current address range, and cross streets as you approach them.
It can also announce points of interest around you, and you can create your own
custom POIs as well (e.g. your home, office, or even a park bench). The
information BlindSquare speaks is relatively customizable (e.g. you can turn
off the announcement of points of interest). Also BlindSquare caches nearby
intersection information, so if you lose cellular data for a few minutes, that
should not be too problematic. Since BlindSquare can still speak when your
device is locked or when the app is in the background, it is extremely
conservative on battery power. It also uses remarkably little data. It does not
support the creation of routes, but it can open a maps app like Apple Maps or
Google Maps with all the details already filled in for you, so this is not much
of an issue in my opinion. In BlindSquare you can also simulate any location
and check out the points of interest around that location. It is regularly
updated with new features, and is a personal favorite for me.

The Seeing Eye GPS app does support routes, but there's no ability to create
custom POIs or simulate a location. It's also a lot harder on batteries and
uses a lot more data in my experience. It hasn't been updated in months,
either. At a very premium price, I'd almost be ready to dismiss the app
entirely except for one thing: it offers quite a bit more detail than
BlindSquare when announcing intersections. This may be very useful if you are
still learning your way around an area.

Both apps offer the ability to point your device in a certain direction and
hear what intersections and points of interest are in that direction. You can
also use both apps in tandem.

David,
Your logic is correct. However, even though Voiceover tells me there
are video controls what I'm listening to is actually their radio feed
and not their TV feed. There must be some accompanying video along with
it but this is supposed to be their audio-only feed. I'm going to ask
my wife what's going on visually while the feed is streaming ..

Re: facetime on iphone 5

2014-06-27 Thread 'David Goldfield' via VIPhone
If my memory is correct, I think that, if you tell siri "facetime John
smith" it will do a video call. When I want to call my brother in audio
only mode, I tell Siri "facetime audio my brother" and it does an audio
call. This can be important as it will take less data to make an audio
call. Also, depending on where you are, who you're calling and what
outfit you have on making a video call might not be the best choice.

I use vIP Radio. I'm not sure if the VIP is a reference tto visual
impairment but it's a very accessible tuner. It doesn't seem to have
any sort of favorites feature and so quickly locating specific stations
can be a pain in the neck, unless I'm missing something. Btw, I share
your furstration with tune-in radio. I find it to be clunky and overly
complex although if there's a trick to getting it to work consistently

Question/Text Grabber va Text Grabber with Translator

2014-06-27 Thread 'David Goldfield' via VIPhone
I see that Text Grabber with the translator option is on sale for
$1.99. I also see a Text Grabber available at no cost. Is the free app
limited or a demo or is it a full-featured OCR app without translating
capabilities?

Hey Wayne. Thanks for introducing me to this cool app. I just downloaded it and

Thanks David, I will check that app out. I used TuneIn for a long

No, there really isn't when first setting up. However, you can set
up VO in iTunes. Unfortunately, it's assumed at setup that you
already know how to use VO. Maybe that would be a good suggestion
for Apple Accessibility.

Deleting Podcasts via iTunes for Windows

2014-07-02 Thread 'David Goldfield' via VIPhone
when using iTunes running under windows, is there a way to go through
the list of podcasts which have been downloaded onto your iPhone with
the goal of deleting specific episodes. I tried by activating the
iPhone button, then choosing the on this iPhone radio button. This
allows me to browse items on my phone, including podcasts, but I see no
way to actually delete them. I've also tried the podcasts radio button
once I select my iPhone but I still don't see an option to remove
specific episodes. Is there a convenient or even an inconvenient way to
do this?

Based on AFB's popular CareerConnectR web program, the CareerConnect app is

In my opinion, the price of this app,

Re: KNFB Reader App

2014-07-06 Thread 'David Goldfield' via VIPhone

One of the things I really like about
Apple, iOS in particular, is that it has successfully allowed us
to escape from the old business model of paying a lot of money for
assistive products. No longer do we have to pay a high price to
access our screens because Apple included a free access package.
No longer do we have to pay a high price for OCR apps because
sighted people, who use and require the same apps, only need to
pay a few dollars for it and, therefore, so do we. In my opinion,
and this is just my opinion, the marketing department of KNFB is
doing us a tremendous disservice by trying to bring back the
1980's and 1990's business model of how assistive technology is
 distributed.

Very Weird Problem with iPhone 5C and Anchor Wireless Keyboard

2014-07-11 Thread 'David Goldfield' via VIPhone
I am experiencing a very, very odd and bizarre problem with a recently
purchased anchor Apple-compatible keyboard. After successfully pairing
the keyboard with my iPhone, everything works well except for the
following issue.
This keyboard has a layout identical to the typical wireless keyboards
you see for Apple devices. However, when I press control-option-left
command with up arrow, the parameter, such as sounds, volume, etc. does
not change. When I went into keyboard help with Vo-K, this key combo is
silent, as though it's not registering at all. Here's the odd thing: if
I press ctrl-option-right hand command with up arrow, the key combo
works but ctrl-option-right command down arrow does not work. Has
anyone encountered this and is there a fix?

Re: Very Weird Problem with iPhone 5C and Anchor Wireless Keyboard

2014-07-12 Thread 'David Goldfield' via VIPhone

Teresa,
thank you for your response. The name of the keyboard, which I should
have specified in my initial message, is the Anker T300. Every other key
combo works well. As a matter of principle, I'd likely return it but
the original packaging isn't in the most usable state. The VO-command
combo with arrow keys work; the keyboard just seems picky about whether
the left command or right command key is used. Other than this one
quirk, I haven't noticed other combinations which don't work. I can
live with it but I find it annoying and I've never encountered such a
thing on non-Microsoft keyboards for Windows computers. Again, thanks
for at least confirming that this isn't just me.

Re: Incase Origami iPad Case and Anker UlthaSlim Keyboard?

2014-07-15 Thread 'David Goldfield' via VIPhone

At the moment, I wouldn't recommend the Anker keyboard.
I purchased the T300 from Amazon, which sounds like the keyboard or at
least one of the keyboards you might be considering.
It has difficulty with the keyboard shortcut VO-Command-Up arrow, using
the left hand command key. If I use that combo with the right hand
command key, it works.
I've written to anker about this and they are investigating it. Until I
can figure out a solution, I'd stay away from anker. At the very least,
make sure vo-command-up arrow works.

Re: Accessing Bookshare on my iphone

2014-05-10 Thread 'David Goldfield' via VIPhone

Hi, Denise.
I am new to this app as well but have successfully used it with my
Bookshare account. From the main screen of the app there is an add button.

Double-tap on this button.
You will then be in a list of options for sources from which you can add
material.

Keep swiping to the right and you will encounter a Bookshare button.
Double-tap.
Since this is the first time you're accessing Bookshare through the app,
there will be text edidt fields for you to enter the email address and
password you use for Bookshare.
enter those and there should be a "done" or "ok" button, which you
double-tap.

that should work but if not just let us know ...

Shalom, Hayah.
I am far from a Mac expert but I've used one, off and on, for a few
years. As to how the Mac's keyboard commands compares with screen
readers such as JAWS, the differences are like comparing, no pun
intended, apples and oranges. OK, admittedly the pun was intended ...

I don't know if you've ever used a bluetooth keyboard with your
iDevice. If you have, it would be better to compare that experience
with using a Mac because the commands are very similar and, in some
cases, identical. Contact me offlist if you have further questions.

Re: Computer vs. I device

2014-05-16 Thread 'David Goldfield' via VIPhone

Kimber,
I realize that this topic is slowly beginning to deviate from the
purpose of this list and so I somewhat hesitate to compose this on the
list. However, I feel that, if this can benefit you or someone else who
is resisting the Mac, I'd like to take the risk. Frankly, I wish someone
had told me some of what I'm about to write.
First, I'm also a user of Windows and have been using it since the
mid-1990's. I first got into playing with assistive tech in 1987 and
began working in the field in 1991. In general, I learn quickly and I
like to think that I know how to teach what I know in a way that people
can understand, without intimidating the student. Consequently, when my
employer first purchased an iMac for my classroom I was humbled, to say
the least. The Mac is very, very different from windows. It's not
quite like going from a Braille 'n Speak to a BrailleNote or from a
victor Stream to a booksense where the same concepts apply but you're
just using a slightly different set of commands with buttons in
different places. It's more like going from English to a foreign
language like French. Some of what you know in the English language
will serve you and will make the transition somewhat easier but, in
general, there comes a point where you can't depend on your knowledge of
your first language in order to learn the second one. You have to
somehow let go and realize that French or another foreign language isn't
English, will never be English and doesn't even try to present itself as
English. You'll be tempted to yell and rant that those stupid
French-speaking people place the adjective in the wrong part of the
sentence and that they have no concept of correct grammar and syntax and
if only they could just speak the way you speak the world would revolve
properly on its axis and all would be well. The truth is, of course,
that the native speaker of french might well be making the same
complaint about our own language and they are no better or worse when it
comes to grammar or syntax than we are; they're just different.
There are things about the Mac which, sometimes, translate from the
perspective of Windows but only to a point. You will be tempted to
throw your Mac out the window and complain that Apple just doesn't get a
clue and that they should be more like windows. They won't and they
don't try to be, for the most part. I had similar frustrations about the
Mac for quite some time. I'm still not to a point where I prefer it
over windows but I've given it a chance and I at least understand why
they do some of the things they do. Sometimes, the keyboard shortcuts
seem unintuitive but if I'm going to be honest I'd have to say that my
beloved windows screen readers sometimes use keystrokes which are
equally unintuitive but we never complain because we just got used to
it. Nobody wonders why alt-f4 is used to close a program in Windows,
even though it's an odd choice and makes no sense. Actually, Microsoft
probably chose it because if they chose a key like escape or alt-c for
close we'd likely press them accidentally more often and we'd wind up
unintentionally closing programs we didn't mean to close but it's still
a bizarre choice for a key.
Admittedly, some of apple's choices are equally bizarre. However,
reading Alex's articles, along with listening to the tutorials from
www.macfortheblind.com really helped me at least appreciate the Mac. It
has advantages over windows but I think it's at least worth pursuing if
you're feeling adventurous.

This is interesting.
I do have my brother as a contact, with both a number for home and one
designated as iPhone. When I tell Siri "call my brother" she always
defaults to the iPhone number, which I suppose makes sense.
Aside from that benefit, what other advantages do you get when you list
a contact's number as being an iPhone number and not just a mobile number?

Re: Case Opinions

2014-05-28 Thread 'David Goldfield' via VIPhone

Tristan,
Shortly after I activated my iPhone my wife found a case for me at
Wal-mart from a company called Tough Mobile, which I think costs around
thirty dollars, give or take a few. While I haven't done actual drop
tests to verify its durability it does seem pretty tough, is reasonably
slim and is easy to take the phone out of the case. My only gripe is
that I'd prefer the closing mechanism to be a magnet and not velcro but
that's minor.

1.What is a slim et sturdy case that will offer optimum protection for

Please provide any input you have on this topic.

I'm guessing the lack of a file system was not an oversight. How many
people would stop using iTunes if they could move files back and forth
from their device to their computer or other devices? I'm thinking
Apple did this intentionally for this and other reasons to protect
their proprietary personality. After trying to purchase DropBox, which
would have gotten them a lot closer to making file transfers easier,
they are now about to offer their own version of a DropBox like
system. It's not necessarily a bad thing. It's just an Apple way of
doing things. But I don't think a company like Apple with all its
brain power would have simply forgotten to include a file system.

I'm not sure iCloud Drive would satisfy those people who want to be
able to access their iPhone like a thumb drive. iCloud Drive would
still only work on an app by app basis. You couldn't copy your music
over in the folder structure you want, unless the Music app supported
iCloud Drive and then 5G won't go very far.

I too would like this feature myself, i.e. accessing the underlying
folder and file structure of the iPhone, but this isn't an oversight
on Apple's part. It's part of the design of the iPhone. I'd be
surprised if Apple were to change this any time soon, and for me at
least, it just became part of the decision making process. I'm getting
an easier to use, more accessible and more secure device at the cost
of being able to access the underlying file structure of the iPhone.

NFB June Braille Monitor/Article on the iPhone

2014-06-04 Thread 'David Goldfield' via VIPhone
Has anyone read the June Braille Monitor? there is an article covering
the supposed pros and cons of the iPhone. I have to admit that it would
be very difficult for me to come up with a list of ten things which are
"not good" about the iPhone but this article supposedly did just that.
I plan to write a detailed blog post in the coming week with my
responses to the ten objections but I'll just say that it's one of the
most irresponsible pieces of journalism I've ever read from that
magazine. Please, understand that this is not meant as a bash about the
NFB vs any other organization or even a criticism of the Monitor.
However, the piece infuriated me because the NFB is a highly influential
organization and many of its members and readers of the Monitor will
take the article seriously just because it comes from a nationally
recognized blindness organization. My fear is that many people may read
this article and will be convinced to not buy an iPhone due to things
which the article claims are "not good" about the device.

Using Voice dictation

2014-06-19 Thread 'David Goldfield' via VIPhone

Hi.
I recently found out that you can specify certain punctuation symbols
while using voice dictation. I also read and was able to confirm that
you can use the word cap to indicate that the word you're about to speak
should be capitalized. Bearing this in mind, I have a few questions.

What if you dictate the sentence "put your thinking cap on." Is Siri
smart enough to know that you mean the word cap and not the word On with
a capital O?
For that matter, if I use the phrase "short period of time" is Siri
smart enough to know that I mean the word period and not the punctuation
mark?

When you're dictating a question, do you say "question" or "question mark."
I'd like it if someone could post a set of rules, as well as tricks, dos
and don'ts to voice dictation to make the text look presentable. I
realize that I'm typically using voice dictation to compose quick text
messages as opposed to a final draft of a novel but I really like my
writing to look somewhat organized and not just a jumbled mess to
sighted readers. Thanks in advance.

Sieghard,
First, thanks for reminding me about using the Notes app to test the

translate your speech as a word as opposed to a punctuation symbol. I'm

will find lots of information including comprehensive lists of commands.
Otherwise I suggest you just open the Notes app and dictate some of the
sentence you mentioned to see how SIRI behaves since it will depend a lot on
how clearly you speak and other aspects. Getting proficient with dictation is
like most other things a matter of practice.

Subject: Using Voice dictation

Hi.
I recently found out that you can specify certain punctuation symbols while
using voice dictation. I also read and was able to confirm that you can use
the word cap to indicate that the word you're about to speak should be
capitalized. Bearing this in mind, I have a few questions.

What if you dictate the sentence "put your thinking cap on." Is Siri smart
enough to know that you mean the word cap and not the word On with a capital O?
For that matter, if I use the phrase "short period of time" is Siri smart
enough to know that I mean the word period and not the punctuation mark?
When you're dictating a question, do you say "question" or "question mark."
I'd like it if someone could post a set of rules, as well as tricks, dos and
don'ts to voice dictation to make the text look presentable. I realize that
I'm typically using voice dictation to compose quick text messages as opposed
to a final draft of a novel but I really like my writing to look somewhat
organized and not just a jumbled mess to sighted readers. Thanks in advance.

2014-06-19 Thread 'David Goldfield' via VIPhone
For me, the real issue with using an iOS device as my only computer
would be how data can and can't be backed up. I know there are online
backup services but I'd like to be able to back up data onto thumb
drives. Also, while my iPhone is now my primary book player, I'd still
like the option of plugging in my thumb drive to my NLS player and there
seems to be no easy way to transfer iPhone content to a thumb drive. I
know, my mindset is so 2010 but I like being able to easily make
offline, local backups.

Hi, all,

I have a computer that needs a hard-drive replacement, at the very
least,
and possibly has a failed logic board. I'm seriously considering
replacing
it with an iPad. Price is only somewhat an issue, since there seems
to be
only about $100 US difference between a new model I would want and
the iPad.
Mainly, I don't want the hassle of replacing moving parts and
getting dust
and cat-hair and such snarled up in it. I'm also extremely
comfortable with

iOS and use my iPod 5th gen constantly. I intend to use the iPad with a
keyboard.

So has anyone else taken this sort of step? Am I out of my mind, or
do you

think this is doable?

I am a casual user. I read books, browse the web, play videos and
music and

games, and occasionally write for informal publications.

What do you guys think?

Question About Using Facetime

2014-04-29 Thread 'David Goldfield' via VIPhone
Hi. For the first time, I used Facetime on my iPhone 5C and was very,
very impressed with the quality of the sound.
I noticed that, while Facetime was running, access to items with
Voiceover was a bit quirky, almost is though Facetime was devouring so
much in the way of resources that it was competing with Voiceover, a bit
like what we used to have to contend with with older soundcards on our
Windows computers that couldn't handle streaming audio and screen reader
output. Specifically, I had a hard time trying to access items on the
status bar at the top of the screen. My brother, who owns an iPhone 5S,
didn't have as much difficulty in using Voiceover with Facetime and I'm
wondering if it's the processor in the 5C?

From Dave Rebro's Newsletter/Ten Siri Tips Related to Email

2014-05-04 Thread 'David Goldfield' via VIPhone
I saw this on a LinkedIn forum and thought I'd repost it below. This was
from a list for users of the iPad but I think the content is very
relevant to this list.

Shhh. Don't tell my wife Carrie, but I have been playing at work today.
If she finds out I'm playing and not working, I could be in trouble.

What am I playing with today? Well those of you who know me, know that I
like to simplify things...You know, find easier ways to do things in
less time.

That said, the more hands free I can make my iOS devices, the happier I
am. So, I started playing around with Siri and the iOS email app on my
iPhone to see what it could do for me.

Well most of you know that when you ask Siri to email a contact in your
address book, Siri will prompt you with questions (like - what is the
email subject and message?, and would you want to send it?) to build and
send the email. All this being hands free (accept for holding down the
home button to summon Siri).

If you didn't know that tip...consider it a bonus tip for this edition! ;-)

But what about emails received. I wondered whether Siri could actually
fetch and read my emails for me. So, as I said previously, I played
around and this is what I found out Siri can do...

1. Find out whether you have any new email messages
*To find out whether you have any new email messages, ask Siri: "Do I
have new email messages?", "How many unread emails do I have?" or "Show
me my new email messages"
*To find new emails from just today, ask Siri: "How many new (or unread)
emails do I have today?" You can also ask Siri how many new emails you
have on a specific date.

2. Find out whether you received any email messages on a specific date
*To find out whether you received email messages on a specific date, ask
Siri: "Did I receive any emails on April 30th?"

3. Find out whether you received any email messages on a specific day
*To find out whether you received email messages on a specific day, ask
Siri: "Did I receive any emails on Monday?"

*Siri displays emails from the previous Monday
4. Find email messages from a specific sender
*To find out whether you received new email messages from a specific
sender, ask Siri: "Are there any new emails from [sender name]?"

5. Find all "new" email messages from a specific sender
*To find out whether you received "new" email messages on a specific
sender, ask Siri: "Did I receive any new emails [sender name]"

6. Find email messages from a more than one sender
*To find out whether you received email messages from more than one
sender, ask Siri: "Did I receive any emails from [sender name 1] and
[sender name 2]"

7. Read my new email messages
*To have Siri read you a summary of your new or unread email messages,
ask Siri: "Read my new emails."
*Note - Siri stated how many new emails messages I had and then told me
who the sender, date and subject of the three most recent email
messages. Then, Siri asked me whether I wanted it to read me the rest of
the new emails.

8. Read my latest email message
*To have Siri read you the date, sender, subject, and entire email
message of your latest email message, ask Siri: "Read my latest email
message."
*Note: Get this, after Siri read the full message to me, it ask me if I
would like to reply. If you say yes, she will then ask you for your
reply and whether you want to send the reply. How cool is that?!?!

9. Read my latest email message from a specific sender
*To have Siri read you the date, sender, subject, and entire email
message of the latest email message from a specific sender, ask Siri:
"Read my latest emails message from [sender]."

*Siri read the full message to me, it ask me if I would like to reply.
10. Send message to contact and carbon copy contact
*OK...I threw in one "send" message tip that I discovered today...To
have Siri send a message to a contact and carbon copy another contact,
Tell Siri: "Send email to [first contact] and carbon copy [second contact]."
*Siri will then ask you for the message subject, message, and whether
you want to send it.

I did come up unsuccessful when I asked Siri to, "Email the last photo I
took." Instead of creating an email with the last photo I took, Siri
rather created an email with the subject "The last photo I took" but no
attachment. I also struck out when I asked Siri for the last email I
sent. Siri notified me that it can only search the inbox.

I would imagine that these ideas and many more will be an featured as
Siri continues to mature.

Hope you learned something today...if you did, pat yourself on the back
and go show off to your family, friends, and coworkers. You deserve it!

Re: My iPhone 4S changed language. What can I do?

2014-05-04 Thread 'David Goldfield' via VIPhone

Rena,
One possibility is that you may have inadvertently changed the Voiceover
language with the rotor. I don't know how much you have learned about
the rotor and so I don't want to assume you know something that you may
not have learned.
One of the choices which can appear in the rotor is language. If you
were focused on that option and slid one finger down on the touchscreen,
you may have switched from English to another language.
If this is what happened, put your thumb and first finger on the
touchscreen and twist both fingers to the right. Pretend that there is
a knob or a dial on the touchscreen and that you're turning this
imaginary knob.
As you twist, you should hear Voiceover read things like "characters"
"words" "containers", etc. Of course, this may be difficult to
understand if you're no longer in the English language. If you can, keep
doing this imaginary knob twisting on the touchscreen until you hear
"language."
Now, slide one finger down from the top of the screen and see if you
hear different choices for languages; hopefully, English is one of them.

I like how it felt to type on the Apple Wireless Keyboard, but it's one
drawback for me, and it was a big one, is that it turned on with the press

This was a problem for me, as it meant that the keyboard kept getting turned

Keyboard

I like how it felt to type on the Apple Wireless Keyboard, but it's one
drawback for me, and it was a big one, is that it turned on with the press
of a button, not a switch.
This was a problem for me, as it meant that the keyboard kept getting turned
on in my bag, thus losing lots of vattery life.

Thanks,
Ari

If you can use something like the RII keyboard or other such devices about

the same size as your phone, then they can make sense. Also remember,
however, they are going to add some thickness and wait. I used the Boxwave
brand keyboard with an earlier iPhone 4s. It added about the phones
thickness and maybe half the phones wait. I just found that for as little as
I required a keyboard, the added bulk was not worth it.

Hello.
On Amazon's site I see that they offer several iPhone cases with attached

bluetooth keyboards. I'm intrigued by the concept but wonder if these cases
are worth buying. Specifically, are the keyboards easy to use? Am I better
off just purchasing a wireless keyboard?

Re: There's even an app for adjusting my bed!

2014-05-06 Thread 'David Goldfield' via VIPhone

Hi, Peggy.
I would absolutely love to try out this app but I have a feeling I'd
have to purchase the bed first.

Hi:

I just wanted to share this with you all because I found it quite amazing.

Last weekend I bought a new Serta adjustable bed. The remote that comes with the bed is
fairly simple to use so I was happy about that. While my husband and I were registering
our bed on the Serta web site, we discovered that there is an iPhone app to remotely
control the bed. I downloaded it and found that all the buttons are properly labeled and
accessible. I have often heard the quote, "There's an app for that" but finding
an app to adjust my new bed was over the top.

Question regarding Moving Files and Folders

2014-05-06 Thread 'David Goldfield' via VIPhone
OK, I'm not too proud to admit that I'm a relatively new iPhone user and
I'm struggling with the way you move items around on your home screen.
You know, I consider myself reasonably intelligent. I've been working
with a.t. for over 20 years and I like to think that I pick up on things
very quickly but I find this issue of moving files and folders extremely
haphazard and unintuitive.
I have learned to successfully move a program into a folder but here are
my questions.
1. M I to believe that the way you create a folder is to move one app
onto a similar app in order for a folder to be created?
2. The names of the folders it creates by default almost seem random to
me. How on earth does iOS determine the default name for a folder? I
do see a kind of logic to it but ... as an example, i accidentally moved
an app onto the Kindle app and it created a folder called Books. OK,
move something onto Kindle and iOS calls it Books ... I think I see that
logic but the whole process just seems like a lot of guesswork. There's
no menu where I can just say "create new folder."
3. What's the best way to move a folder located on page 2 of my home
screen onto page 1?
I have done very well in learning everything else that I need to learn
and, for the most part, I find the touch interface of iOS easy and
intuitive except for this business with dragging things onto other
things to create folders. I really hope Apple is able to provide a more
intuitive interface for this in a future version of iOS. If there is an
easier way of doing this, please let me know. Please, don't be afraid to
answer these questions in simple language; explain it to me like I'm a
four-year-old ...
