Re: VoiceOver volume problem

2016-08-14 Thread Caitlyn Furness
I think it’s definitely Roger doing this somehow.

I will usually just double tap with two fingers, causing my chosen audio
whatever to play(usually the book I am currently reading), wait for the book to
come on, then two finger double tap again, and things are back to normal.

the other weird thing that’s happened since the new Roger update is that Roger
messages will suddenly start playing, even if the app is closed, and even
though I don’t have Roger in the notifications list.

I have written the app developers in hopes they will fix this issue!

Hmm.. I never thought of that! How’d you clean the watch? Just a damp soft

Re: device not supported by apple watch

2016-08-11 Thread Caitlyn Furness
Well, it’s only a year old, so I hope not!

I took the watch off the charger, wore it today, then put it back on when I got
home. It made the usual connection sound, then I rushed over to my phone and
was able to do the software update to the watch OS. so, I hope this is the
last I’ll see of that message!

device not supported by apple watch

2016-08-11 Thread Caitlyn Furness
Hi,
Today, out of the blue, my apple watch started saying that this device for
charging isn’t supported by apple watch.

Only thing is, I am using the original puck charger I got with the watch!

Granted, I haven’t yet updated the watch to the latest version of watch
OS-could that be the reason it’s giving me this crazy message?

Re: Spark People

2016-07-30 Thread Caitlyn Furness
Hi,
sparkpeople is an app which lets you track food and exercise plus a whole lot
more stuff. It’s a companion to the sparkpeople.com
or .ca web site, of which you have to be a member to use. It’s free to join.

I am also in Canada and I have the app, so not sure why you couldn’t find it,
Sean. Try typing “sparkpeople”, with no space between spark and people and see
if that works.

As far as I know the ads are what help make the app and the site free, so
that’s why they are there. No way to remove them. I don’t find them annoying
or in the way, but perhaps I’m just used to them or something. I am also
totally blind, so that might also be why. Not sure how obtrusive they are if
you are partially sighted.

hth,
Cait

Re: accessible hymnal app?

2016-07-09 Thread Caitlyn Furness
Might another option be to put the words into a text file, one file for each
song?

I did this with songs from church and put them into braille for myself, now all
I have to do is take the relevant ones with me each week..

Christian Book Distributers sells a words only edition. What about
contacting the publisher to see if you could get a text version, then you
could put it into Voice Dream Reader, and read it that way, or another app.

Well, I am in Canada, so that might make a difference.

I had issues getting stuff in braille as well, and the materials weren’t the
full package, as the sighted members paid for. Yes, it was the basics, and I
could use it, but.. really.

anyway, I hope you have luck with the app, and the program in general. It

Re: Weight Watchers App.

2016-06-06 Thread Caitlyn Furness
There used to be an app that you could get from the app store from weight
watchers. You have to be a member and paid up to have full access to the app,
though.

The app was mostly accessable, but you couldn’t see how many points you’d eaten
for the day, or have a running tally. They were visible on the screen, but
voice over couldn’t read them.

I emailed the head office without any luck, basically, they could care less.

Re: apple airport express

2016-05-18 Thread Caitlyn Furness
Well, we had several other brand routers before the extreme and had problems
with them dropping the wifi signal, etc. we haven’t had any issues with this
extreme and have been using it for about three years now. I wish they’d put
another usb slot on it, but that’s just me.

I am not techy enough to speak about the performance of other routers, and
heck, I don’t even understand all the mumbo jumbo, I just know this one works!

Re: Using NLS cartridges with mac

2014-08-15 Thread Caitlyn Furness
Vicky,
The reason you are having problems with the books is that when a mac transfers
things to a USB drive, etc, it leaves "mac dust". This clogs up things for
nonmac devices.

There used to be an app called blue harvest which would remove this mac dust
from external media.

Only other solution I know of is to put the cartridge into a pc and manually
remove the ghost files..

Re: Changing Account Settings from Imap to Pop?

2014-07-31 Thread Caitlyn Furness
You might have to configure your account for pop first on their web page.

After that, choose "other type of account" instead of letting mail do it for
you in the mail settings on your device. then you can add the appropriate pop
incoming and outgoing server info, port numbers, etc, by hand.

app for canadian fliers, revisited

2014-07-04 Thread Caitlyn Furness
Hi,
I just wanted to share this fantastic find with Canadians on this list.

the app is called flip. It has all the fliers you could possibley want to
"flip" through for sales and such. It tells you the sale price and when the
flier begins and ends. You can search for items you might want and it'll find
the item for you in the current batch of fliers and the best price, if it's on
sale. you can make clips of items on sale and create a shopping list for the
grocery store. If your store is like my local one, this allows you to price
match.

And, the best part of this is, this app is so far as I can tell by test driving
it so far, totally accessible!

Today I got pet things on sale using this app and got a bunch of money off my
dog food using it.

Re: aftershokz bluz help

2014-06-28 Thread Caitlyn Furness
No, these are the aftershokz bluz, not the bluz 2's.
There are buttons on both the left and right ear peices and on the back.
I figured out some of it, like pushing the button on the left ear thingie
answers a call and will also hang up. Pushing the right one will play music
and stop it. One of the buttons on the back is power on and off and on seems
to say the battery level.
I haven't figured it out beyond this, though.
Thanks,
Cait
ps-I can't get the second generation ones on amazon.ca, that's why I have the

aftershokz bluz help

2014-06-28 Thread Caitlyn Furness
Hi,
I just got a pair of aftershokz headphones and need some help getting started
with them.
I tried to scan the manual that came with them and it was useless. I also
tried to download the manual from the at guys web site and that too was
useless. the file must be corrupted or something because it was blank. I
can't seem to find the user guide anyplace, not even the aftershokz web site.
So, can somebody give me a walk through of the buttons, please?

I'll play around with it mean time and try and figure it out myself, but any
help would be useful and much appreciated!

Thanks!
Cait

Re: Iphone 4s or 5C?

2013-11-25 Thread Caitlyn furness
when I put the two phones together, the 4 and the 5c, they are the same width,
but the 5c is a bit longer.

I had to get a case for my new 5c because I kept dropping it. the plastic
makes it a little slipperier then my old 4 was. the case solved the dropping
problem. I just got a cheap $5 case from walmart, made of rubber.

Re: Airplay tips

2013-11-21 Thread Caitlyn furness
I just have to add to this that setting up one of these airport devices is dead
easy with the airport utility. don’t let the set up process scare you!

We have an airport express attached to our stereo and then I have the remote
app on both i phone and i pad. It’s great to be able to stream movies and
stuff from my mac to our stereo. I am so keen on having this now that I get
miffed if something goes amiss with the set up! thankfully, that hasn’t
happened a lot since we got a new, unused express!

Re: DoItWrite 1.0 for iPhone from Draconis Entertainment

2013-11-21 Thread Caitlyn furness
You can use i phone apps on your i pad, but the screen area is usually the same
size as it is on the i phone.

Sometimes, there will be an option to blow up the app screen so it fills your i
pad screen, though.

I have both, and I haven’t had any trouble running i phone apps on my i pad,
just be aware of the smaller size.

Re: Voice dream tap conflict

2013-11-17 Thread Caitlyn furness
On my i phone and i pad, if voice dream was the last audio app that I was
fiddling with, then the two finger double tap will definitely start it again,
even if focus is away from voice dream. If I pick something else, though, like
some music files in the music app, then the double finger tap will start that
if it was the last thing played.

I think they changed the siri voice in I OS 7.

If you’re in the states or Canada, you can try the male siri voice and see if
that’s better for you.

Do these labels stick if I transfer the photos to my mac?

I had to deal with a bunch of pictures yesterday and really don’t want to

Re: Sendero look around, Navigon and blind square

2013-11-15 Thread Caitlyn furness
Well, they each do different things.
Blind square is wonderful and I wouldn’t be without it, but it’s not quite a
full featured GPS.

Navigon is good for navigating to a specific address, especially if I happen to
be with a sighted friend who might be driving.

Look around is good for poi’s around you that you might not know about or for a
quick check of what street you’re on or what intersection is coming up, but the
info you get from look around is very limited.

I still have all three and have them in their own folder on my dock. I use
blindsquare the most. Between blindsquare, ariadne, and my guide dog, I do
pretty well at finding most things I’m looking for.

Re: Creating folders and moving apps on iPhone 5C

2013-11-12 Thread Caitlyn furness
Hi Andrew,
You can still create folders in the way you did on earlier phones and with the
last OS. You just have to keep your finger on the app you’re moving held there
for a little bit once it’s on top of the other app you want in your folder.

To exit the edit mode, just hit your home button.

I’ve found that when moving apps, it works better if I move my finger slowly.
Also, sometimes, for some unknown reason, you have to try moving the app more
then once.
hth,
Caitlyn, also with a 5 C

Re: New to iPhone - typing text efficiently

2013-11-08 Thread Caitlyn furness
Andrew,
To change the typing style from standard to touch typing, get into an edit
feild and then turn your roter until it says typing mode. then you can flick
up or down to change from standard to touch typing.

to change the volume of voice over, do a two finger swipe down the screen to
have vo start reading the entire screen, then use the volume switch to turn vo
up. the volume switch only effects what’s currently making noise, if that
makes sense.

audible question

2013-11-07 Thread Caitlyn furness
Hi,
I am wondering about audible.

If you buy a membership for a given amount, do you then also have to pay for
books on top of the subscription?

Also, once you have said books, do they remain on your i phone or i pad or can
you store them someplace in i tunes for keeping them?

thanks,
Cait

Re: accessible weight watchers points app

2012-04-26 Thread Caitlyn Furness
As Paul said, the weight watchers mobile app is pretty accessible. when I was
on their program it was way more useable then their web site. I just had to
add up the points in my head rather then have them displayed on the screen, but
the numbers of each thing are there to see, just not the totals like they are
for the sighted people. Hope that makes sense.
