hearing aid volume

Hi,

 

My wife needs help adjusting the volume on her Phonac hearing aids. She has
a 13 ProMax running 16.2.x. This is the volume of her phones ring tone and
the text message tone that comes through her hearing aids via Bluetooth. I
am designated tech support here at home, but I'm not having success with
this problem. All suggestions appreciated.

SIRI and Maps

Hi,

 

I thought I used to be able to say to SIRI "driving directions to Jane Doe"
and if Jane doe and her address was in my contacts Apple Maps would open and
start giving me directions. That doesn't work for me any more. I can tell
SIRI to give me driving directions to a specific address and that will work,
but I kind of liked when SIRI could find the address in my contacts because
I don't know all the addresses by heart of course. I often act as navigator
to my wife's driving. 

 

So I am just curious if anyone has thoughts or suggestions. Maybe I'm just
getting senile and misremembering what I used to be able to do. A common
affliction for guys in my age bracket I am told.

app for tracking calories

Hello,

 

I'm looking for an easy to use app for tracking calories and maybe protein,
carb, fat grams. I have the 2022 SE iPhone. I am total blind if that affects
recommendations. Easy to use is probably the most important piece for me.

I’ve been a big fan of Consumer Reports print magazine from back in my sighted 
days but I’m less familiar with the digital version. I suspect the above link 
doesn’t include the complete text of the article available to subscribers but 
it does include some very good points and is worth reading. I believe their 
choice for Password Managers is 1Password.

The idea of a password manager is that you have one program which remembers and 
signs you into your apps and websites. That program has many features, but the 
most fundamental is that of remembering passwords and autofilling them when 
needed. Password managers can generate new passwords to input into your apps 
and sites, and it is recommended highly that each site or app has both a 
different password, and two-factor authentication, which a password manager can 
also help you with.

 

To get started, you can install and set up an account with 1password or 
LastPass. If you have passwords saved in your browsers, you can import them 
into the password manager. If not, when you log into a site, you will be 
prompted to have the password manager remember that password for you. Password 
managers use browser extensions to interface between the password manager and 
your browser, and there are extensions for Chrome and Edge for both 1Password 
and LastPass.

Password Managers

Password manager

Good morning,

 

What's an accessible password manager for both PC and IOS. I have my 3rd gen
iPhone SE with me always but any real computer work I do is with my PC and
JAWS. My current password system is getting pretty ugly so I need to find a
solution.

Cannot hear my son and he cannot hear me on call

Hi list,

 

I'm not explaining this well. I have an iPhone SE 2020 with latest software.
My son just called me, it rang fine but when I answered I could not hear him
and he could not hear me. He has an android phone, a google pixel, I think.
I tried calling back with the same result multiple times. I tried calling my
sister who has an iPhone and everything worked fine. I restarted the phone
and it came back with voiceover acting sluggish, responding very slow. That
went away after a while but I still can't talk to my son. We can send text
messages but no voice. Were people having trouble with something similar a
few months ago?

exploring a virtual location

Hi list,

 

I have an iPhone SE 2020 with the latest software. I would like to use it to
explore a virtual location. I live in Duluth, MN, my son is buying a house
near where he teaches in Chicago. I'm wondering what would be an easy way to
do a virtual explore of his new neighborhood. If I don't have the right ap I
can get it. Simple and user friendly is always best of course.

When you use siri to start your workout, what do you say? Can you say “start 
elliptical workout “? Or “start outdoor walk? ” to differentiate between the

It’s not an overlay,

 

It’s the 3rd level of the workout app,

 

If you flick to the very right hand end of that level

You will hear 3 of 3 

 

At that point flick down a level to 2,

Then put your finger on the screen at that point and it should tell you one of 
those measurement levels,

Then you can flick left / right to see what it’s telling you.

It’s a bug that came with watch os 8 and hopefully it will be fixed soon as 
it’s bloody annoying 

 

I’m finding using siri to start the work out and or pause / restart the work 
out 

Is easier than trying to press the buttons with that issue.

the last upgrade when I go to check my status there is an overlay on the screen 
from the music app or audio that wants me to interact with sound or music or 
radio or whatever and I can’t get to my workout data or pause or end my 
workout. I want to make this go away but don’t know how to. I like some of the 
things the watch can do but I fine it hard to use. When I’m using the workout 
app I want that to be primary. I’ll listen to the radio when I’m done with the 
walk.

Hi list,

Apple Pay and money to my daughter

Hi,

 

I read the support page and did a trial run with $5 to my daughter. It
worked fine. I could only use my debit card. It wouldn't accept my Wells
Fargo credit card with no explanation as to why. But it does work so I'm
good.

With my sighted wife’s help I ordered a new SE, black, 128 Gb, with Apple Care  
and arranged to trade in my old iphone 8. We were online right at 7 AM CDT. It 
took us 13 minutes from start to finish which I thought was pretty good. I 
think we had to restart the process twice. It is supposed  to be delivered next 
Friday, April 24. I had to pay the full price plus tax and they ship me a 
package with labels so I can send them the iphone 8. When they get the 8 they 
will credit my account $170.00. I didn’t want to try to sell the old one 
locally.

 

That’s my story, hope you’re all doing well in these strange times.

Ordered a new SE this morning

Good morning,

 

With my sighted wife's help I ordered a new SE, black, 128 Gb, with Apple
Care  and arranged to trade in my old iphone 8. We were online right at 7 AM
CDT. It took us 13 minutes from start to finish which I thought was pretty
good. I think we had to restart the process twice. It is supposed  to be
delivered next Friday, April 24. I had to pay the full price plus tax and
they ship me a package with labels so I can send them the iphone 8. When
they get the 8 they will credit my account $170.00. I didn't want to try to
sell the old one locally.

 

That's my story, hope you're all doing well in these strange times.

Is today the day for the SE 2020?

Good morning,

 

I know no one knows anything until  Apple announces but I am hoping when and
if that announcement comes someone will post it on this list. I don't
monitor the Apple web site but I do check this list a few times during the
day. My iphone 8 needs a new battery and I wouldn't mind a little more
storage. I can afford a new phone if I want but don't really want to deal
with a larger phone or face recognition if I don't have to. So I am
interested in whatever this new SE might be.

Hi, Thanks for all the good advice. I’m starting from just outside Duluth. We 
are thinking maybe 400 miles a day so that would be 4 nights with 5 days of 
driving. If we need an extra day it won’t matter. We don’t have to be back ‘til

It is always wise to plan ahead; you want to be sure the Inn has a room for you.

 

Marathon driving is OK for kids, not for people your age. Figure how far you 
want to drive then look for a good hotel you will reach around 3 PM which is 
when they start checking-in. Have a shampoo, shower, and relax before supper. 
Or have a swim in the pool.

 

Or a haircut or massage. Sitting in a car is tiring.

If the car needs repairs, you may be able to get the dealer started on the work 
that afternoon, if they have a night shift, they may be finished by morning.

Crown navigation on Apple watch 5

Hi, I am also new with the watch. However, I do use the workout app. I think 
you have to be on page one in the app to find the “end” button. When you are in 
the workout session swipe right to the end of the page where it will say page 2 
of three or page three of three. Now swipe up or down until it says page one of 
three. I think the end button is between new and pause near the top. Good luck,

I just recently got the watch and today I went into the Workout app, chose the 
equipment I was using and started the session. Now no matter what I try I can’t 
get it stopped nor can I close the app? I have even tried shutting the watch 
down but when I turn it back on, the app is still going. How in the world do I 
get it to stop? And it keeps saying to turn the digital crown to unlock but 
when I do that, nothing happens. I am totally stumped.

New watch, iphone 8 and notification

Hi,

 

As of last Friday I have a new series 5 watch paired with my iphone 8
running ios 13.2.3. So now when I get a text I hear the notification on the
watch but the phone doesn't chime. If I have the watch off and on the
charger the phone will chime. How do I get both the phone and the watch to
chime?

There is MyWay Lite   
which is free and MyWay Classic 
  which costs $14.95 
in Canada, probably $11.99 in the US would be my guess.

Both are from the Swiss Federation from the Blind, but when I checked MyWay 
Lite it says the last update was on November 26, 2014 and it mentions the 
update brought support for iOS 8 and the iPhone 6 and 6Plus.

MyWay Classic, the paid version, had a much more recent update on September 21, 
2017, still now over 2 years ago, but that was after iOS 11 was released.

I last used these on a campground on Maui in 2011 where I recorded the route 
from my tent site to the showers/washrooms which was probably only a few 
hundred feet, but it involved quite a few turns on narrow path and it worked 
OK, but you sort of had to hold the phone in front of you so I am not sure how 
practical it would be for a longer walk in a city.

Maybe somebody on the list is still using the app, but I haven’t seen any posts 
mentioning them in years.

At my work, some Orientation and Mobility instructors are doing a research 
project into apps that can record a route so a person could then use the app to 
do the route again independent of any human guide. They are focusing on people 
who are deaf-blind. They are working with the Clue app right now, but wondered 
if there are other apps that do something similar.

Problem with Health app since ios 12

Hi, 

 

I track my steps with the Health App on my iphone8. It's gotten to be a
habit. If I do a half hour on the elliptical or treadmill, I check the steps
count. If I go for a walk with my wife, which we do most days, I check my
steps count. Since IOS 12 when I open the Health App and check the today tab
to see my steps count it says " no data available:. 

 

At first I would shut off and then restart the phone and the step count
would appear. Lately I have been clearing the Health App out of the App
switcher and then re-launching the app and that seems to work also. I didn't
have to do that prior to ios 12. I've been tracking steps since sometime
last winter, so that would have been ios 11.x. Any thoughts? Is this a good
enough excuse to tell my wife I need a series four watch?

How to text message a cell phone from a PC

Hi, 

 

I sent a text to my ATT iphone 8 from my Windows10 Pc and it worked great.
But, when I sent back the reply it just disappeared into the great unknown.
I just dictated a reply on the phone. It would be nice to be able to do
messages with my daughter in college using the PC. Not sure what I did wrong
because all I did was dictate the reply and double tap send.

Hi Joe, thank you so much for buying the book.

If you’re adding a single epub file to Voice Dream Reader, you don’t want it 
zipped. Just drop it with the .epub extension somewhere in Dropbox, and have 
VDR retrieve it. I’ve tested this to confirm it’s working. We take great care 
with VDR compatibility and once it’s in there, you’ll be able to navigate 
through iOS 12 Without the Eye by heading.

obvious to me. I can get it to dropbox fine. But when I Add it to VDR, it gives 
mee an unabailable error message.

Thanks for your help. That is what I was doing but it just wasn’t working. I 
finally ended up using my phone and Safari. When I got to the right page like 
you described I tapped on share with VDR and that worked.

Hi Joe,
When you got the book, you should’ve been on a page that had three links. One 
was a link just to the PDF version. Another is a link just to the EPUB version. 
The third is a link to a zip file containing both the pub and the PDF versions. 
And each link is identified as such. At least, that’s what happened to me. I 
did this on my phone not on a PC, but I should think it wouldn’t really matter. 
If you go to that page and download just the EPUB file, which is the first one 
in the group of three links, you should be able to put that into dropbox and 
then transfer as you are used to. I hope that helps.

Having trouble adding book to Voice Dream Reader

Good message app for U.S. to Costa Rica

Hi, My wife is going to Costa Rica for 12 days. What is a good way for us to
text? Would iMessage work or should we use Whats App or maybe something
else? Anything else we should be aware of? We both have iphone 8 and use

will usually work properly.
