Re: "Location tracking on" is back again

2016-08-28 Thread Mary Otten
Thanks, Mark. Maybe it is the new GPS app. Although it does seem to happen at
times when I have not been using the GPS app at all that day. It's a mystery.
Rebooting the phone would fix the problem. But rebooting is not exactly what I
had in mind. Smile.

RE: "Location tracking on" is back again

2016-08-28 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Mary,

I only now just saw your email.

It would appear that a few differences exist in the OS between back then when I
first answered your Location Tracking question and now.

In short, some third-party apps, like Nearby Explorer take longer to release
the GPS or, perhaps the OS is more latent in releasing the GPS, these days.

Regardless, once you make certain that the third-party GPS app is closed from
the app-switcher, give it about 2 to 3 minutes for the Location Tracking
indicator to disappear from the status line. I have found that (1) simply
opening the Settings area will cause the status line to update or (2) rebooting
the phone will also update the status line.

Under that system services tab, what are location-based alerts? Those are on.
I'm not sure what they are or why they're on or whether I actually turned them
on. I don't think so. Since I don't know what they are, maybe the default is on.

Hi

This might be one of the settings under system settings within location

it have been one of those?

If you go to settings, privacy, location services you can turn off any of your
apps that you don't to use your location.

Donna

No. Turning off location services means no apps ever get location information.
That is not the way to go if you have GPS apps for instants or other
applications, maybe a local news application or whatever, that need your
location. Even the weather app needs your location. This was something probably
under privacy.

Re: "Location tracking on" is back again

2016-08-28 Thread Mary Otten
Thanks, Shai. That setting is still off, so that's not it. There are some
interesting things under system services, a few of which are on, some of which
I don't exactly know what turning them off would do. Something like Wi-Fi
calling, which is currently off, or compass calibration which is currently on.
Then there is something about cellular network search, which is also off. But
there were a couple of others that I can't think of right now which are on.
Maybe it's one of those. It definitely isn't an app like Facebook. I never let
things like Facebook or Twitter or even Safari for that matter, see my location.

Re: "Location tracking on" is back again

2016-08-27 Thread Shai
Hi,
The setting that Mark suggested was to disable background app refresh.
This can be found in settings/general/background app refresh. He
mentioned that toggling it to off should remedy your location always
tracking issue in the status bar.
Hope that helps

Re: "Location tracking on" is back again

2016-08-27 Thread Jan Kleinhans
Hi

This might be one of the settings under system settings within location
services. There are things like cellular services wanting to use location
services, wifi wanting to use this, traffic routing wanting to use it. Might
it have been one of those?

If you go to settings, privacy, location services you can turn off any of
your apps that you don't to use your location.

  Donna

No. Turning off location services means no apps ever get location
information. That is not the way to go if you have GPS apps for instants or
other applications, maybe a local news application or whatever, that need your
location. Even the weather app needs your location. This was something probably
under privacy.

2016-08-27 Thread Mary Otten
Already done. Before, when I have this problem and posted about it, I had
already turned off location tracking for any app but didn't obviously need it.
That left things like the weather app, my local news app, GPS apps. Most things
don't get to have location services on. Oh, tune in radio and maybe another
radio program which will show local stations

"Location tracking on" is back again

2016-08-27 Thread Mary Otten
Some months ago, I reported that I was having a problem with location tracking
being on when it should not be. That is, I wasn't using nor did I have running
any app that had permission to use location services. Mark helpful he suggested
some setting that I needed to change, which seemed to solve the problem. The
problem is back with a vengeance. And I can't remember what the setting was.
Can anyone refresh my memory?
Mary
