RE: Good color identifying apps

2015-01-12 Thread Ron Pelletier
Hi all,

In my opinion, none of them are worth their money. Unreliable at very best.
I've thecked the same thing up to 10 times and got 10 different colours.

I think we are still in the ball game of the stand alone devices which go
directly on the surface to identify with a seal around the lense to prevent
exterior light. Something we will never get with a smart phone which is
very very influenced by ambient lighting.

Re: Good color identifying apps

2015-01-11 Thread David Chittenden
You need at least an inch between the phone and the item, if checking for
colour. I recommend at least the width of a hand, thumb to pinky finger,
between the phone and the item.p

I have tried color visor that is sayd to be the best.. for me the

says random colors... also black when a white thing is under the phone...

RE: Over Priced Colorino - Was: Good color identifying apps

2015-01-07 Thread Merv Keck
Yes I apologize for my generalization. I have been informed several times
now that it is $219. The one that just quit working because someone left
dead batteries in it for six years I have no idea how much was paid for it
and where it came from. Or even where it was purchased.. I did need to throw
it away in June and will be hoping to replace it soon. And will be keeping
it for myself and caring for it myself though.

Over Priced Colorino - Was: Good color identifying apps

Where in the world did you find a Colorino so overpriced at $400? There's a
number of sites that sell this item for $200.

  Hi,

Why is the Color Test 2 $700 compared to the Colorini $400? Is it that much
better? I still have six months to pay on my Quest before I can make another
accessibility purchase but I would like to get the best one out there. Since I
just had a Grand Maul seizure and shoved my head through the Powder room wall
and will be paying that off for a while I would like to buy the lesser priced
one if it is as good as the greater priced one. But I learned the hard way not

Re: Good color identifying apps

2015-01-06 Thread Andy Baracco
They scientifically measure the wavelength of the light reflected back from
their internal light source. Because they have their own light source, and
because you place the sensor touching the object, the amount of light is
constant. The device is not affected at all by room light. You can use them in
complete darkness, and they will work the same way that they would if you used
it in a television studio.

Hi Neal,

I would like to know how accurate you need the colors and what
types of activities you would need a color app on the phone? I'm
not sure who stated this in an earlier post, but if I need a more
accurate result, I use my stand alone Colorino. This device can
be purchased from Maxi-Aids, LS and S, to or Independent Living
Aids. I believe that the cost is about $200, but don't quote me.

Re: Good color identifying apps

2015-01-06 Thread Sandratomkins
Neil,
Do keep practising, this really is an excellent app and I've used it for a few
years now on a four for S and our six.indeed, with the six I am being
challenged!I got so used it before and before S their size et cetera, but now
I'm finding I am a little less accurate with six being a bigger phone with more
latitude for misalignment.as far as "true" colours are concerned, it is a moot
point because colour really varies according to light.A shadow will not only
change the colour to something darker but it may change it intentive make it
more blue on more red et cetera.I have found the CamFind is best at saying blue
red brown green rather than going into euphoric descriptions of multiple shaded
colours.Plus, I took a shot of our Christmas tree and it said "green Christmas
tree with Christmas decorations and Santa Claus".so, for complex pictures it is
really useful!finally, if you want to identify a product if you can get some
label into the camera view you have a very good chance of it being identified
but when you take these shots you have to try and get the camera to focus
primarily on the object you wish to identify rather than within a general
scene. So, close-up!

good luck!

Re: Good color identifying apps

2015-01-05 Thread Eileen Misrahi
Hi,

How would TapTapSee know that it's a color that one is after? With the fact
that one needs to purchase pictures, I don't think I would want to waste one
and not be able to indicate what I am after. Unless it has changed, there is no
way to ask a question in the app. This makes it extremely difficult to receive
precise info on an item. JMO.

Re: Good color identifying apps

2015-01-05 Thread Eileen Misrahi
Hi Neal,

I would like to know how accurate you need the colors and what types of
activities you would need a color app on the phone? I'm not sure who stated
this in an earlier post, but if I need a more accurate result, I use my stand
alone Colorino. This device can be purchased from Maxi-Aids, LS and S, to or
Independent Living Aids. I believe that the cost is about $200, but don't quote
me.

RE: Good color identifying apps

2015-01-05 Thread Neal Ewers
Well, I just installed camfind and it is, so far, about 50% accurate. I can
hold the object in a stationary position at the same distance from the camera
and take two pictures which are not often identified as being the same color.
So far, my wife is still more accurate than it is, and if I didn’t have sighted
assistance, I still don’t know if 50% is accurate enough. I’ll play some more,
but, so far…

If you want to stay with the iPhone, Judy Dixon, in her book on using the
camera with the phone, did a systematic study of several color identification

Here is my opinion on this.

Camera based color identifiers have the following problems for us.

There will likely be a different amount of light seen by the camera as you take
each picture. Thus, the object may appear to be a slightly different color than
it was the last time you took a picture of it.

You will not likely take a picture of exactly the same part of the object as
you did the last time. This would not be as much of a problem were the object a
solid color. However, if it is not, you may get a different color announcement
each time you try to capture it.

As has been said, the dedicated color devices usually have a very small opening
and you hold the material against the device thus filtering out all the light
the device does not need to determine the color. Some of them I have tried
allow you to hold down the identify button and move the device over the
surface. They may or may not announce the color change as you move, but they
may give you various tones to suggest that the color is changing. So, for
example, you may determine that the material is striped or in some other
pattern. You can then release the button and then tap it again to discover the
color. I have not played with these for a while, so they may have changed
relative to my description, but this may give you some clue as to why a
dedicated device may be more handy.

It will identify patterns and not just the color under the quarter inch of

Then, check with the usual catalogs, LS&S, Independent Living Aids, maxi Aids,

RE: Good color identifying apps

2015-01-03 Thread Ron Pelletier
Hi,

You probably will continue to download less than satisfactory apps. I
downloaded about 6 of them and never could rely on any of them. There is
nothing like a stand alone device.

A stand alone device sits directly on the material to check with a seal all
around so that colours are not distorted. I don’t know how a cell phone app
could do that unless you could put the camera directly on the material to be
checked. With the smart phone, too much depends on the ambient lighting. Up
until now, very disappointing.

Re: Good color identifying apps

2015-01-03 Thread Richard Turner
Have you tried CamFind?
I find it as good if not better than any of the specific color identifying apps.

Re: Good color identifying apps

2015-01-03 Thread Andy Baracco
None are very good because of poor lighting. The dedicated devices are better
because they have their own light source, and you hold the device right up to
the item that you are working with. These color ID apps are more for
entertainment purposes than anything else.
