Re: Need link for the itunes 12.1 fix
Here's the message Robert Doc Wright posted. I just grabbed it from the archive. Here is a fix for the 64Bit iTunes that works. You will have to uninstall iTunes first. There is an order in which iTunes should be properly uninstalled. I will place that information below and place the link for the fix afterwards. Uninstalling iTunes Steps 1.Remove iTunes and related components from the Control Panel. Use the Control Panel to uninstall iTunes and related software components in the following order. Then restart your computer. 1.iTunes 2.Apple Software Update 3.Apple Mobile Device Support 4.Bonjour 5.Apple Application Support (iTunes 9 or later) Don't uninstall these components in a different order, or only uninstall some of them. Doing so might have unintended affects. iTunes 64 bit fix http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1784 On 02/17/2015 12:19 PM, Wendy Alling wrote: Could someone repost the link for the itunes 12.1 fix? itunes 12.1 from Apple, or the horse's mouth
This is the first helpful message I have ever received from Apple Accessibility when I have sent in a report of an issue. So, for those who are still looking for the official Apple resources concerning iTunes 12.1, here it is: Hello, Apologies for not getting back to you before now. We have determined that some individuals who use iTunes 12.1 with third-party screen readers on Windows 64-bit systems may experience improved functionality by uninstalling their currently installed version of iTunes and installing the version found here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1784. We recommend the following article for steps on how to uninstall iTunes: http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT1923. It is a best practice to restart the computer prior to reinstalling iTunes. Re: [497261] Itunes 12.1
Reading all the way down, I just see this one message in the thread, so I apologize if I'm covering old ground. I wouldn't judge Apple's commitment to accessibility or the work of their accessibility team based on how just one of their applications performs on a non-Apple platform. If you just look at the Apple devices and applications, there's enough there to keep a test team busy for a life time. I'm also not sure what Apple's official support statement is on supporting screen readers under Windows. I've only seen that they recommend Window Eyes. IMHO, I wouldn't be surprised if iTunes on Windows is a pretty low priority for Apple. For example, they don't support the Metro interface, there last round of changes was to give it a look and feel to match the latest OSX software and so on. I think more and more people are using their mobile devices to consume content more than their laptops and desktops and so consequently people are buying laptops and desktops to support their mobile devices and not the other way around. If Apple were to drop the Windows version of iTunes altogether, I'm not sure they wouldn't sell more Macs and not even notice a drop in sales on iPhones. On 02/04/2015 03:27 PM, Ron Pelletier wrote: Hi, You haven’t been reading all the way down. I did report to Apple and they responded that they support Windows Eyes when, in reality, Windows Eyes say that they support only iTunes 11. I wrote back to Apple to ask them to explain why they claim they support only Windows Eyes and they, themselves say they don’t support above iTunes 11. The response was that they support only Windows Eyes but that doesn’t mean that Windows Eyes supports them so we have to wait for Windows Eyes to update their software. That sounds like a game of pitch and catch. They toss the ball to one another and, meanwhile, we are up the creek without a paddle in a wire canoe. Bottom line is that Apple is telling us to manage somehow until the accessibility software catches-up to them. I would have thought that the accessibility department at Apple would have given advance notice to the company or companies so they could prepare ahead of time. If they are an accessibility department, they must have tested iTunes 12.1 with thee accessibility software they support. Meanwhile, where is Tim Cook’s commitment to accessibility? This is not just one app, this is the software we use to manage all our I devices. When they gave notice of the availability of a new version, could they not have put a warning that this new version does not work with screen review software or didn’t they know because they didn’t test it? Having said all that, don’t we have the responsibility of making sure things are working before we jump into them? Were some of us in a bit too much of a hurry to jump into the latest and greatest? Re: [497261] Itunes 12.1
This is obviously highly subjective. I agree NVDA is a great screen reading option for Windows, but whether it's the greatest or not depends a lot on what you need it to do. I use it at home, and prefer it in many ways to other screen readers when it comes to reading mail, surfing the web and using iTunes. Two of my last three jobs though have been in Windows shops, and I couldn't have done either of those jobs if NVDA had been my only screen reading choice for Windows. I needed highly sophisticated screen reading abilities in applications like Microsoft Office and Lotus Notes. If we're talking about comparing screen readers on Windows then I think we're getting off topic for this list. On 02/04/2015 10:35 AM, Davy Cuppens wrote: In my opinion, NVDA is the best screenreader ever for windows usage. RE: [497261] Itunes 12.1
Hi, You haven't been reading all the way down. I did report to Apple and they responded that they support Windows Eyes when, in reality, Windows Eyes say that they support only iTunes 11. I wrote back to Apple to ask them to explain why they claim they support only Windows Eyes and they, themselves say they don't support above iTunes 11. The response was that they support only Windows Eyes but that doesn't mean that Windows Eyes supports them so we have to wait for Windows Eyes to update their software. Meanwhile, where is Tim Cook's commitment to accessibility? This is not just one app, this is the software we use to manage all our I devices. When they gave notice of the availability of a new version, could they not have put a warning that this new version does not work with screen review software or didn't they know because they didn't test it? Having said all that, don't we have the responsibility of making sure things are working before we jump into them? Were some of us in a bit too much of a hurry to jump into the latest and greatest? Now! that's the flip side of the coin Ron & Danvers -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. All new members to the this list are moderated by default. Version 12 was fine, but 12.1 is when everything went south. I am not one to complain about program updates, but 12.1 really went backward. Here's hoping Apple fixes this soon. Re: Information on the inaccessibility of iTunes 12.1 from Freedom Scientific
Hi Charles and all. Thanks Neal for sending this info along. I was about to do it so glad it's out there. As you can appreciate, we wanted to test thoroughly before making any kind of public comment, so I've had to keep quiet on this one until we were sure of what was going on. Charles, yes, Freedom Scientific has reached out to Apple to let them know what we believe to be causing the issue in the iTunes 12.1 code for 64-bit Windows. For now, if you run 64-bit Windows, I think the best option if you need iTunes is to revert if you can. Information on the inaccessibility of iTunes 12.1 from Freedom Scientific
Hi, The following was taken from Freedom Scientific with their permission to share this in order to cut down on confusion. Begin snip. "With iTunes 12.1 and 64-bit iTunes Apple inadvertently introduced an accessibility problem with accessing the album list and perhaps other lists in the iTunes UI. (The problem does not exist in the 32-bit version of iTunes.) It impacts JAWS, Narrator, and Window Eyes. All three of these products use 64-bit components to obtain MSAA event information inside of the iTunes process generating the events. This generally offers better performance than receiving events out-of-process. NVDA uses the out-of-process technique and is primarily a 32-bit app, even on 64-bit windows. The nature of the iTunes bug is such that it does not impact 32-bit processes receiving events out-of-process." End of snip. So this is why it works with NVDA, and it is also why some can use 12.1 and others cannot. It would appear that it is up to Apple to help figure this out. Re: [497261] Itunes 12.1
In my opinion, NVDA is the best screenreader ever for windows usage. OK you do not have the ability to obtain certain very advanced features that you might need in advanced text editing in really complicated text formatting etc ... but f.e. in webcontent I swear you get the best results in comparison to even the most expensive and advanced screenreaders. Hello Sieghard and list I sent an email to Apple's accessibility people and the answer warries me a bit. The email stated that iTunes 12.1 works well with Window Eyes and that other screen readers need to be upgraded. From that I assume that Apple is not going to do anything about the problem. There is an Applevis podcast that is entitled iTunes 12.1 with JAWS, but the key commands given are iTunes commands, not screen reader commands, so they should work with any screen reader. RE: Updated to iTunes 12.1, No Problems
Arnold, It may just be that Vista and XP work differently because under Windows 7 I am no longer able to see my column browser or list of songs. I only had a quick look and will check this out more, but while I can still use Control+f to go to the search field and the first set of radio buttons show up OK and also the second, when I select My Music and have it set to Songs, I only get some buttons which don’t give me any information. My columns with Genre, Artist andAlbum are gone even though the column browser shows as enabled. I am supposed to do a presentation about how to navigate in iTunes 12 and do things on Tech Talk on February 16, but unless I can find a way to improve this or another update comes out until then which fixes these issues I don’t think I can do the presentation since there wouldn’t be much I can show. I am running it on a Windows vista computer, using Jaws 15. As related to accessibility, if I hadn't known I had updated, I would not have been able to tell. It seems the same as before, no problems, so far at least. I note that the Window Eyes users seem to be having more problems with it. That is unfortunate. If you remember, it was GW Micro that first started making iTunes accessible to windows users. Indeed, Apple recommended Window Eyes as the preferred software for the blind. Re: [Bulk] Updated to iTunes 12.1, No Problems
Is it the screen reader?, or the application. Maybe there are tweaks that can make iTunes more friendly to the screen reader? I'm not thinking of only JAWS, either, as other screen readers are also having issues. I'm wondering if there are settings in the screen reader, iTunes, the computer, or any combination of the three that will improve the results. --- Be positive! RE: [Bulk] Updated to iTunes 12.1, No Problems
I just updated to ITunes-12.1, and I honestly wish I had not done it. I use JAWS-16, and I can't figure out how to access my list of albums. I figured out how to find an album one song at a time, but that is such a tedious process. It seems to me that ITunes is becoming less accessible with every update. I wish I could roll back to the previous version. Updated to iTunes 12.1, No Problems
Although I had read the less than positive messages about iTunes 12.1, I decided to take the plunge anyway. I do hope the Window Eyes developers get it together, and that this is not a harbinger of things to come with the merger of GW Micro and AI Squared. Searching in the app store with this latest version is even worse, if that were possible. I am using Window-Eyes and browse mode is completely useless. All I hear is “top bottom” after a search for an app. If I turn browse mode off and tab, I can get to the links for the app I searched for, but I can no longer navigate to the description, what’s new section, etc. Don’t think it matters, but this is Win 8.1 and Window-Eyes 9. At least with iTunes 12, I could toggle browse mode on and off and then get to the app and read the page just like I was in a web page. Now, the only thing I can do is tab between links. Re: iTunes 12.1 for Windows
I'm using a laptop running Windows XP Pro, and the last update that was made to JAWS 15. I got the new version of iTunes earlier today. I am not having any problems. I went to the iTunes store and did a search, got the results, got the app, and synced my iPhone 5, all with no problem. I can see my music and apps flawlessly. --- Be positive! After opening itunes 12.1, tab to music and make sure it is checked, then tab across and there is still a playlist checkbox that when you check it and then tab a bit more, you get into the list of playlists. RE: ITunes 12.1 on the PC?
Hi, I had success late last night. You might need sighted help the first time. I did. When I had my IPOD checked, I got to where it said music, and my son told me to arrow up. Jaws wasn't saying anything. When he told me I was in the right place, I tabbed forward, and my fields behaved the way I've been accustomed to in the past. I guess the next time, I will arrow into nothingness and tap until things look normal. I hope that made sense. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of David Redman Sent: Monday, October 20, 2014 9:56 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: ITunes 12.1 on the PC?
