Richard,

I have an iPhone 6, and if I have the profile set to manual picture, it works
well. If I change the profile to automatic picture and try to have it take a
picture of the same page in the same lighting, I get the lens closed message.

Did you get the question about giving KNFB permision to access the camera when
you first tried to use it?
I've never gotten the lense covered message.
To me, that says there isn't enough light or something.
I'll do some experiments and let you know.

It probably can, but sometimes, plaques and such use very fancy printing, or
other unusual fonts. As you know, unusual fonts and OCR oftentimes do not
work well together. Let us know how well it does.

read enough text to let me know whether I wanted to keep the piece of mail or
not. Just keep trying, and it should work for you. It takes a lot of patience

 Hey Everyone:

I excitedly purchased the KNFB reader app yesterday.
However, I seem to be having a lot of trouble with it.
I have tried to do several scans but can't seem to get good results.
I tried holding the camera sideways.
I tried holding it straight up and down.
I tried holding it with the camera lens facing down towards the page.
I have the tilted guidance setting on.
Every once in a while, it will stop vibrating and I will try to take a
picture, and sometimes it will kind of read some text but it's very jumbled
and while it gets some words it often doesn't make sense.
However, I keep reading how so many others are getting great results.
Just last week, I was able to witness a demonstration of this app, and it
 worked great.
I don't have much printed material around at the moment, so have been trying
to scan a random page from a paperback book.
 Does lighting make a difference?
How do you hold the phone to get the best results?
For those who got great results on their first try, what did you do and how
 did you hold the phone?
I even listened to the Applevis podcast.
I was just initially so excited about this app when I heard the
demonstrations of how well it worked and it's not seeming to work very well
 for me.
 What am I doing wrong?
 Thanks,
 Kerri

 Subject: KNFB Reader Help?

 Hey Everyone:

I excitedly purchased the KNFB reader app yesterday.
However, I seem to be having a lot of trouble with it.
I have tried to do several scans but can't seem to get good results.
I tried holding the camera sideways.
I tried holding it straight up and down.
I tried holding it with the camera lens facing down towards the page.
I have the tilted guidance setting on.
Every once in a while, it will stop vibrating and I will try to take a
picture, and sometimes it will kind of read some text but it's very
 jumbled
and while it gets some words it often doesn't make sense.
However, I keep reading how so many others are getting great results.
Just last week, I was able to witness a demonstration of this app, and it
 worked great.
I don't have much printed material around at the moment, so have been
 trying
to scan a random page from a paperback book.
 Does lighting make a difference?
How do you hold the phone to get the best results?
For those who got great results on their first try, what did you do and
 how
 did you hold the phone?
I even listened to the Applevis podcast.
I was just initially so excited about this app when I heard the
demonstrations of how well it worked and it's not seeming to work very
 well
 for me.
 What am I doing wrong?
 Thanks,
 Kerri

RE: KNFB Reader Help?

2014-10-01 Thread Ron Pelletier
Hi,

It will take some practice. If you can't get the vibrator to stop, its
simply because you are not yet holding the phone correctly. Try to tilt it
left and right and also away and towards you. With more practice, you will
certainly get it.

Good luck

Sorry about that. I didn't explain it right. I already have my ring tone
turned on in the sounds in settings but I can't get the vibration to stop
vibrating when I use the tilt guidance feature. I think that I just must not
know how to hold the phone correctly. Thank you for the reply and for your

Perhapss you should put the phone on a table and if it does not vibrate, you
will know your table is level, then pick it up and see if you can keep it
level. It does not take much of a tilt to start the vibrations.
It occurs to me that if people have a hard time holding things like trays, or
plates or even cups level, this could be a good tool for learning to hold
things level by putting the phone on them, while they are empty of course, and
see if they can walk across a room without the phone vibrating.

Hi,

If you are holding it correctly, it will stop vibrating. For as long as the
phone vibrates, it is not level.

Note that this does not apply in the vertical position if you are taking a
picture of a document posted on a wall or bulletin board. I would like that
feature to be part of the next update.

Hi Carrie, I too just purchased the app. I can't get the vibrate the
tilt guidance to work for me. But I held the camera straight
up-and-down, and the paper in the other hand with the envelope
straight up-and-down and it didn't read enough text to let me know
whether I wanted to keep the piece of mail or not. Just keep trying,
and it should work for you. It takes a lot of patience and practice,
but it is a good app. God bless and good luck, wren Langley PS, that
was supposed to be it did read enough of the mail to let me know if I
wanted to keep it or not. If I can be of any more help to you.
Please write to me off list. Sorry for the dictation errors.

I excitedly purchased the KNFB reader app yesterday.
However, I seem to be having a lot of trouble with it.

I tried holding it straight up and down.

Does lighting make a difference?
How do you hold the phone to get the best results?
For those who got great results on their first try, what did you do
and how did you hold the phone?
I even listened to the Applevis podcast.
I was just initially so excited about this app when I heard the
demonstrations of how well it worked and it's not seeming to work very
well for me.
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks,
Kerri

Re: KNFB Reader Help?

2014-09-19 Thread Richard Turner
One technique that might help you is to put the phone flat on the page you want
to scan with the back facing camera in the center of the page.
Then grasp the phone with your thumbs and little fingers on the four corners of
the phone and raise the phone up trying to keep it flat and the camera still
centered on the page. For a 8.5 by 11 inch page, you want to raise the phone
about 12 inches above the page.
Then, the field of view report should tell you that all four corners of the
page are in view.
Then take the picture.
With practice, you will be able to estimate the distance above the page and
getting the camera centered over the page.
This is how I got good scans with Prizmo before getting the standscan pro and
then the Giraffe Reader.
I still have not purchased KNFB Reader, but with all the rave reviews, I may
decide it is worth it.

Richard
