Re: Moderator's reminder about high list traffic, and what you can do to help everyone else
Raul, I personally make a concerted effort to abide by the guidelines you've posted in this thread. But (sure, you just knew there was going to be a but, right), one issue here is -- I believe -- subject to mitigating circumstances. In the case of to send or not to send a thank you post, allow me to explain; there have been several times when I would post a question regarding a iOS how to or asking about some type of supplemental component for an iDevice. Upon realizing that all sorts of answers are forthcoming from this very helpful group, I must confess to being guilty of sending a Thank You to this list. The reason I would do this is to hopefully shut off the stream of helpful answers. I in no way mean to appear disrespectful of your request and, in fact, soundly agree with your position. It's just that I believe there are exceptions when violating the rules is actually supporting the rules. Just thought I would throw this thought out there and see what you think. Thanks for the job you do so very well! Re: Moderator's reminder about high list traffic, and what you can do to help everyone else
I have one more suggestion. Unfortunately, I have not figured out how to do this on my iPhone, if indeed it is even possible. On a pc, and I hope on a mac, turn off the feature that immediately sends mail when one hits send. Oftentimes, I have composed a message, only to realize later that somebody else has already written what I was going to send. So, I delete my message from the out box before it gets sent. Gallegos r...@raulgallegos.com To: ViPhone List viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Tuesday, September 17, 2013 11:50 PM Subject: Moderator's reminder about high list traffic, and what you can do to help everyone else Hello all. Please remember that this list is already high traffic. So, if we all do our part to help minimize the extra messages, it will make everything better for you, and for everyone else. Below are a few things which have been popping up as of late and which need to stop. I hate playing bad guy here, but consider this a public warning. If these types of messages continue from certain individuals, you will be written to privately and you will be moderated. 1. Keep discussions on this list to iOS or iDevices. This means that discussion of apps, accessibility of apps, recommendations for apps, dos and don'ts of apps and iOS howtos and all that is more than welcome. Continuing to discuss the Android is not welcome. Remember this is a list for the discussion of the iPhone and the related devices using the iOS platform. 2. Thank you and other one liner messages. I keep bringing this up, but I'll remind you again, please keep the one liner messages which don't add to the list, such as thank you, or such as oh I'm sorry for my last message off this list. If you accidentally sent a message to the list, or you figured the answer to a question, don't post yet another message to say you are sorry or that you figured it out. Chances are in the first example that you will be ignored, and in the second, that people who don't read all messages first will answer your question anyway. Then when they see your never mind message, some might write to say OK, and now we have yet more useless messages. 3. Hijacking threads. Please do not hijack a thread. If you don't know what this is, please visit Google.com and look it up. Basically though, if you want to start a new conversation by using the reply button or hot key, don't. Just start a new message with the New button or hot key. 4. Read ahead. It might pay well if you read ahead a little. Especially when a new iOS version comes out. If you have questions, most likely someone else will have the same question as you. So wait and see if it's already been answered. Second, if you are a person who likes answering questions, chances are that someone else already did, so wait and see if that's true. This will be one of the biggest items that will help the list traffic. 5. Does anyone even read these any more? If you are reading this far, please know that you have my sincerest gratitude. I realize that this message doesn't apply to all people, but unfortunately there are always a few bad apples, and sometimes just a few naive apples. I personally feel that people don't intentionally go out of their way to make a moderator's job harder. I like to think that most of us are well-intentioned. Perhaps you could include a line such as thanks in advance for any answers in your original message. I oftentimes do this if it applies. Re: Moderator's reminder about high list traffic, and what you can do to help everyone else
Hello Bill and others concerned. Bill, you do have a good point and I totally understand where you are coming from and for the record, it's not disrespectful to point out something like this. In an ideal world that would work perfectly, however in my experience most people don't read the new batch of messages they get first before replying. So what ends up happening is that let's say that you send off the thank you message, that would tell me, topic closed, you got the answer, all good. However if me, or someone else doesn't see that right away and as soon as they get to your initial message, before the thank you messages, they might reply, and then when they come to your message, they will see it wasn't necessary, or they might think, he's thanking me because I responded. I probably sound cynical, but after more than 15 years of maintaining mailing lists of various topics and different sizes, some from as little as 5 people and some even larger than 3000 people, you tend to look at things from a much wider point of view. If it was me, I would gamble that even if you send the thank you message to indicate stop, chances are, the thread will continue several messages more. One thing though, which I know happens, and there is no avoiding a one line answer, is when the answer to a question is simply yes or no, or something equally short. Things like that are acceptable. I don't expect someone to write an essay just to say yes and avoid a one liner message. Question: Is iOS 7 coming out today? Answer: Yes. One thing which I highly recommend is the following mailing list story. It's funny, but sadly, true. http://users.rider.edu/~suler/psycyber/listbulb.html I hope this helps you, and anyone else interested in this. -- Raul A. But Raul, in your example, would it really be so much trouble for the respondent to write Yes, IOS 7 is coming out today. Otherwise, one must read past all the headers to get to the question. Re: Moderator's reminder about high list traffic, and what you can do to help everyone else
Hi, sorry I don't follow. I'm not talking about top posting vs bottom posting. If the answer is yes, then just write yes. Most people reply at the top of the message so no extra header reading is necessary. I hope that makes sense, assuming I understood your message, which I very well could have not. -- Raul A. RE: Moderator's reminder about high list traffic, and what you can do to help everyone else
Evening Raul and list, thanks for the reminders, yes this list is indeed high ttraffic, case and point since late Tuesday evening until nowI have 257 new emails in my inbox, I guess that's why I created a gmail account simply for partoicipating in the listserve rather than playing around with filters and the like. Nevertheless, the main purpose of this short note is to offer a suggestion to anyone who might read my reply, I guess I fit into category 5 referenced below, I find that it is always best to sort my messages for this list in refverse chronological order, read everything first, and then decide which messages I will reply on so as to attempt to avoid needless duplication. Hope the tip/opinion is of some small amount of benefit to 1 or 2 members. Cheers, Ed. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Raul A.
