RE: New hand gestures on Apple watch

2021-10-11 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I can't understand this message, so let me just provide some more information.

It seems that I need to toggle on hand gestures in the VoiceOver settings on my
Apple Watch. You might need to do this through the Watch app on your iPhone.
That might have been what got it working for me. Note I have an Apple Watch SE.
You also need to be running WatchOS 8 and IOS 15.

Now after you wake up your Apple Watch, say by pressing the crown, you can
enable hand gestures with a double clench. This means make a fist twice quickly
with the same hand your watch is on. Once it's enabled you can move from item
to item with the pinch and double pinch gestures. This is the same as swiping
on the face of your watch, but you're not touching your watch and your using
the fingers on the same hand your watch is on. So for example, if I pinch my
pointer and thumb together, I'll hear Mindfulness and with another pinch I'll
hear Workout and then the time. These are the objects on my watch face. A
double pinch will move me back an item, so say from the time to Workout and
then to Mindfulness. To activate the item I just heard VoiceOver announce, I
just need to do a clench, that means make a fist with the hand my watch is on.
This way I can work with my watch without having to touch the screen.

I hope that helps explains things a bit.

I am running Watch OS 8. Under Settings -> Accessibility -> VoiceOver -> Hand
Gestures, I have them toggled on. Under Settings -> Accessibility -> Assistive
Touch (which is in the Motor section) the option to toggle this on is greyed
out.

I'm not sure what I just did, but they just started working with the above
settings. Using the defaults, when the watch face is active, I can enable hand
gestures with a double clench. A clench is making a fist, so if I do this twice
then hand gestures are enabled. To move from item to the next item, I can
perform a pinch gesture by just touching my pointer finger to my thumb. A
double pinch moves backwards. A clench performs a double tap on whatever has
focus and the double clench simulates a press of the crown. I'm still playing
with it, and I haven't determined how useful they are yet, but I'm intrigued.

I believe that in order to use the new gestures, you have to enable Assistive
Touch in WatchOS 8. If you have not updated your watch to version 8 of the
operating system, then these new gestures will not work.
