Re: Overcast versus downcast
Taraprakash, Unfortunately, no. (It is a podcast player/downloader, thus the RSS in its name.) You can, however, input the URL of the podcast that you would like to investigate or subscribe to. The podcasts themselves, do not have to be radio station podcasts; but can be of any type of podcast that's in the directory. -Original Message- From: TaraPrakash Sent: Thursday, September 17, 2015 12:38 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: Overcast versus downcast Does it have radio stations streaming making it true to its name Or is it just a podcast player? It took me a while before I started using RSSRadio, to get used to what it was telling me in Settings, etc. (It seemd a bit cryptic, if I may put it thus.) So, in the meantime, I tried out on occasion one or two other podcast apps, including DownCast, which I still have. I purchased it. (There's a setting in RSsRadio to delete podcasts when listened to.) Mty iPhone 5S is just 16Gb! One of the things I like about RSSRadio is that you can increase or decrease the speed gradually, like, 1, 1.2, 1.2, 1.3, etc., etc. - these are givin in percentage adjustments. The top speed is 2.0, at 100 percent; and when you add the silence skip feature to that you can end up with a highest speed of 2.5 and/or more. I will point out here, as perhaps I should have done earlier, that I do have a Braille display; so I can mute the VO speech and still navigate away and know what I'm doing. Also, I have one podcast set in DownCast, which app I must load again to play with. It's good, but for me didn't seem as feature-rich when listening to a podcast as RSSRadio. I was in touch with the RSsRadio developer, an Englishman, who did test it with VoiceOver (although he hadn't done so in some time before I contacted him during the summer). -Original Message- From: Mary Otten Sent: Wednesday, September 16, 2015 2:40 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: Overcast versus downcast This is the first I ever heard of RSS radio. The one thing I don't like about overcast, unless I am missing something, is that you have to download podcasts in order to listen to them. Since I have a 32 GB iPhone, which is almost full, this downloading of podcasts is kind of an issue. I don't want to keep them. I just want to stream them when I want to hear them and then be done with them. Unlike with books, where I really do prefer normal speed reading, unless the reader is really slow, I would appreciate to speed up and cutting out of dead air the downcast offers. Frankly, I love it when a podcast offers transcript. I can read them in a fraction of the time it takes to listen to the folks actually talk. And I get the same information. Hi, I can't remember exactly where I saw it, but I think in the downloads queue you do have the option to mark the podcast for streaming. When I have some free time later, I will have a look and try to find the exact steps to accomplish this. The audio quality of OverCast makes it the winner for me over both iCatcher and DownCast. Re: Overcast versus downcast
I have to say I'm not a huge podcast person. I do like Downcast versus overcast without too much discussion. Downcast is just more responsive and feature rich. I have to admit that I didn't know about the 2x vs. 3x issue. Still, I like Downcast. On Sep 4, 2015, at 4:14 PM, Woody Anna Dresner wrote: Hi, I love how good Overcast sounds at fast speeds. As for getting podcasts into Overcast, I'm pretty sure Downcast has the ability to export an OPML feed. You can email this to yourself and open the file in Overcast. Re: Overcast versus downcast
I also really like that voice boost feature, and yes, the quality at higher speeds is better than in Downcast. The one disadvantage a friend pointed out to me that she didn't like is that Overcast requires you to download the podcasts to your iPhone, while with Downcast you have the option to stream them if you don't want to download them to your phone. So if you don't want all your podcasts downloading to your phone and have limited space, you might prefer Downcast. Re: Overcast versus downcast
Hi, I love how good Overcast sounds at fast speeds. The voice boost feature is good too; on a podcast I listened to recently, the host apologized for the disparity in volume between himself and whoever he was talking to on Skype, but I heard no difference thanks to voice boost. As for getting podcasts into Overcast, I'm pretty sure Downcast has the ability to export an OPML feed. You can email this to yourself and open the file in Overcast. RE: Overcast versus downcast
That has been my experience with both Overcast and downcast as well. The major advantage with Overcast is the faster speed is better quality. However, I like the feature set for downcast. I use downcast on my iPhone exclusively having had exposure to both apps I prefer Downcast. If I want to take my time and listen to a podcast at normal speed I use the no frills no thrills basic podcast feature in the apple TV which I dearly hope they improve with the next generation. The iPhone always gets my podcasts hours before the apple TV does. Another reason I prefer downcast. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Cristóbal Sent: Friday, September 4, 2015 2:05 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: Overcast versus downcast The one advantage I've found with Overcast over Downcast or other podcasting apps in general is that it can play files at the 3x speed. RE: Overcast versus downcast
The one advantage I've found with Overcast over Downcast or other podcasting apps in general is that it can play files at the 3x speed. Downcast used to be able to do this, but for a while now, once you try to play something past the 2x speed, the file begins to skip. I've written the Downcast dev about the skipping issue, but doubt that at this point it'll ever be addressed. Other than that, I can't say I'm much of an Overcast fan.
