There are rumors of new iPads being released this year, so you may want to
wait a while and see if they prove true.

Okay, okay, that might be true theoretically, but the real question is, what
apps do people want or need to use that a given device can't run because it
is too slow or for some other reason is outdated. That is the only practical
question. If there are significant numbers of apps, or even a few, that a
lot of people want or need that they can't run on their device, then the
device is for all practical purposes obsolete. But if there are none, or at
least none that people really want or need that it can't run, then what
practical difference does it make how old it is?

Hi Evan,

I agree with you.

I have a desktop computer that is at least three to four years old, while my
daughter uses my laptop that is only a year old and much, much faster.

Either way, it's still a great computer to use and so I use it on a daily
basis.

I happen to know that there are people I know that are still using a
computer with Windows XP on it. They don't use Internet Explorer, and just
use Firefox, and they can't even get iTunes installed on it because the
latest version won't support it.

Regardless of that, one does find that apps tend to get more and more
sophisticated and processor intense, and so end getting slower and slower.
The device ends up taking longer and longer to load apps, and the simplest
functions end up getting more difficult and time consuming.

I agree with your mindset, as long as it will run it, why the heck not and
keep using a tried and true device.

I'm still using a 4S and have no intention of upgrading to the 7, least of
all it's lack of a headphone jack. Smiles.

For a chip, I don't think just under two years is ancient, but it is rather
old, Especially when you compare it to today's chips.

Hi,

That depends on your definition of cope; mine's most likely different
to yours so listing examples would be rather pointless.

The CPU is the same one that is in the iPhone 6, so the question you
have to ask yourself is if you'd buy a 6 in 2017 when there are 2
newer options available.
The cheaper price arguement doesn't work either: in the UK at least if
you buy a mini from Apple you'll be paying £400. I recently purchased
a brand new iPad air 2 for £330. Admitidly the bump in spec isn't
huge, but a: that represents nearly a 20% decreace in price and b: one
hopes that Apple will support it for slightly longer with iOS updates.
To me at least, in 2017, the only reason I can see for someone to buy
a mini is the smaller screen. To be fair this does make some
difference to me - I was using a handfull of mini's to deliver a
workshop the other day & they're much nicer to hold than the airs, but
that definitely doesn't mean it makes sense to spend more money on a
less capable device.

Cheers,
Ben.

Well, I got my iPad Mini 4 last April, and the price for the 128GB model was
slightly better than for the 64GB one, so I went for that. I didn't want to
carry around one of those big slabs, and while the reviews I read certainly
did indicate that there was a slight difference in speed between the Mini 4

Now, in 2017, if I were hearing that a new iPad might be in the offing, I

Now, in 2017, if I were hearing that a new iPad might be in the offing, I
might consider waiting to see what develops. But that wasn't the case when I
got mine last April.

Cheers,
Ben.

Hi Evan,

I agree with you.

I have a desktop computer that is at least three to four years old, while
my

daughter uses my laptop that is only a year old and much, much faster.

Either way, it's still a great computer to use and so I use it on a daily
basis.

I happen to know that there are people I know that are still using a
computer with Windows XP on it. They don't use Internet Explorer, and
just

use Firefox, and they can't even get iTunes installed on it because the
latest version won't support it.

Smiles.

Okay, okay, that might be true theoretically, but the real question is,
what
apps do people want or need to use that a given device can't run because
it

is too slow or for some other reason is outdated. That is the only
practical
question. If there are significant numbers of apps, or even a few, that a
lot of people want or need that they can't run on their device, then the
device is for all practical purposes obsolete. But if there are none, or
at

least none that people really want or need that it can't run, then what
practical difference does it make how old it is?

Actually, the rule of thumb is that computer technology becomes outdated
within six months of it's beta release, in other words, when it's released
to the public.

For a chip, I don't think just under two years is ancient, but it is
rather

old, Especially when you compare it to today's chips.

Hmmm, my iPad Mini 4 has stereo speakers at the bottom, on either side of the
charging port.
I went for the portability of the Mini, and for the apps I’ve tried so far,
it’s been working great.
Having come out in September 2015, I would bet it will be supported for several
years yet.
As to this whole old products thing, I know someone who is still using an iPad
Mini 2. She uses the BARD Mobile app, listens to described movies on Netflix,
reads her money, runs the KNFB Reader on it, gets on Facebook, and probably
more I don’t know about, all with no problems. People should be wary of feeling
that they need the newest and fastest because it ain’t necessarily so.

Re: IPad Mini 4

2017-01-14 Thread Ben Mustill-Rose
Evan,

Perhaps I'm getting the wrong end of the stick here, but do you
genuinely think that when looking at cold hard numbers the 9.7 pro
isn't better than the mini 4?
The mini 4 uses the A8 SoC and has a 1.5GHZ CPU.
The 9.7 Pro uses the A9X SoC and has a 2.16GHZ CPU.
It's a very simplistic way of looking at it, but 2.16 is a bigger
number than 1.5, there for it is better.

Of course, some people may feel that the increase in performance isn't
enough to justify purchasing it and that the smaller size of the mini
makes up for its outdated technology. that's fine, but that's an
opinion, whereas it is a simple fact that the 9.7 pro contains a
better CPU than the mini 4.

Cheers,
Ben.

Re: IPad Mini 4

2017-01-14 Thread Evan Reese
Well, "better" is a subjective term. If you can get it at a cheaper price,
and you don't mind the size, then I suppose the Pro is better. But if you
want a smaller device, and the (rather small) speed difference isn't a
factor in what you're using it for, then the iPad Mini 4 is better. And, as
I just mentioned, someone I know is perfectly happy with her iPad Mini 2,
using all the apps she wants to use with no problems. So which is "better"?
Chip speed is just one factor. There are other factors in deciding whether
one device is "better" than another, including price and size.

Re: IPad Mini 4

2017-01-14 Thread Evan Reese
Well, as I've already said, chip speed is only one factor when considering a
device, so there is no argument involving speed by itself.
If I were able to drive, I wouldn't let how fast a car can accelerate be my
only consideration when deciding on which one to buy.
Someone who is considering an iPad now should definitely think about how
large a device they want, especially if they're going to be carrying it
around very much, and also how substantial the likelihood is that new iPads
will be appearing later this year. If Russ is correct that the rumors say
nothing about a new iPad Mini, and if size is really important to her, then
she will have to decide on whether to get the Mini 4, even though it is
older technology. If size isn't important, then she might want to wait and
see if new iPads come out in the not too distant future.

Re: IPad Mini 4

2017-01-14 Thread Evan Reese

Hi Paula,
That's great. I'm glad you're still getting some use out of it.
Anyone thinking about an iPad now has a bit of a dilemma though.
My feeling on that is that if you really want a device, you should just get
it. There's always going to be something new and faster with more features
coming out not too long after you get whatever you get anyway, so if you
wait around, you'll always feel that you got an obsolete machine no matter
when you buy it because, technically, it is obsolete almost as soon as it
gets to the public. So just get it when you want it.
The devices we have now are so marvelous anyhow that even the obsolete ones
are pretty impressive when you think about it.

I am still using the first iPad Mini that came out a few years ago. It's
still working well although it is quite slow and is too old for IOS10 but
it's fine for now until I decide to get a new one.

Best wishes

Paula

Hi Evan

Yes that's true. I don't think anyone can truly keep up-to-date with all
this technology. The next iPad I get will be a lot faster than my iPad Mini.

RE: IPad Mini 4

2017-01-14 Thread Merv Keck
I chose a Mini 4 on the AT&T Next plan because I already had two iPhones on
the plan. So adding the 128 GB Mini 4 was the more economical option for me as
far as tablets were concerned. It was also the perfect size and was fast enough
to do everything I needed it to do. In two years from September 2016 I will
trade it in for something more up to date also on the Next plan so my
investment is minimal.

Although it sounds great on its own, I tend to pair it with a Bluetooth
keyboard and speaker. And it is extremely convenient.

It is a lot faster and it has stereo speakers which is nice when holding onto
it. I don't think it is better when thinking about chip speed though. It just
seems a little snappier. Just my opinion though.

If you can handle just a slightly larger iPad, the 9.7 inch Pero is awesome! I

Hi Helga,
I’m glad you are enjoying your iPad Mini. I have had mine for nearly 2 and a
half years. Prior to that, I was using an iPad 3.
I have also been an iPhone user for 6 years and obtained my iPhone 7 silver,
256 GB, last week. I absolutly love it! The audio is amazing and the batery
life is so much better than the 6.

A couple of questions re IPad Mini 4

2015-09-20 Thread M.Nelson
when the excitement settles down, I intend to get a Mini4. I won’t be using it
for phone calls, don’t use a BT keyboard and seldom use it for email, so are
there any other “gotchas” that I should be aware of? Also, is the screen always
split or just with certain apps?
Thanks,

Not seeing any iPad specific bugs, but in any case, split screens are for
certain apps only like the stock Settings and Mail apps.
