Hi again,

If you have to scan printed materials and depend on the best possible
results then Yes, the Standscan would be an additional item you would bring
along. However, it's only a big larger than a sheet of paper and folds very
flat, I don't have mine yet, so I can't say exactly if it is an inch or an
inch and a half, but at less than 250 grams it weighs about as much as 2
iPhone Fives and it wouldn't take much space in a backpack or briefcase.

1. You can read about it and order it at www.Standscan.com, $29.95.

2. You can use "VIPHONE" without the quotes as a discount code to get
10% off and a free 12 Volt DC Power Adapter (normally $4.45).

3. Please read through some of the last 2 or so dozen of posts about

RE: Standscan question

2013-03-18 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Mich,

Prizmo is an app that does OCR (Optical Character Recognition). Others are
Text Grabber, SayText or Text Detective. It seems most people like Sandy or
Esther who have done a lot of experimentation with these prefer Prizmo and
Text Grabber where the latter works apparently very well with the Standscan
(I don't have mine yet so can't add my own experience). Prizmo is, I think
$10 and one of the more expensive OCR apps and the link to the Canadian app
store is below. By the way, if you Google an app name especially if it's
relatively unique like "Prizmo" you will quickly find the information and
more often than not the direct app store link which I am including below:

Hello Arnold,

The StandScan Pro is a box with a bottom and one open side. It can take a
sheet of A4 or foolscap, or an open paperback book. I posted here the
results of two scans of a double-page of a paperback done using the
StandScan Pro and Prizmo. The results were excellent!

I'm glad there's now a reduction on the price for a short while, but I don't
regret paying the full price for mine.

Cheers,

Anne

I am glad I ordered it, even if it ends up being most useful at

Re: Standscan question

2013-03-18 Thread Anne Robertson
Prizmo is an OCR app. It works great with the StandScan Pro for scanning books
and other fairly large pieces of printed material. However, I find that
TextGrabber, another OCR app, works better for items such as boxes, as long as
the print approximates to black on white rather than white on black.

Cheers,

Anne

  Hello Arnold,

The StandScan Pro is a box with a bottom and one open side. It can take a
sheet of A4 or foolscap, or an open paperback book. I posted here the results
of two scans of a double-page of a paperback done using the StandScan Pro and
Prizmo. The results were excellent!

I'm glad there's now a reduction on the price for a short while, but I don't
regret paying the full price for mine.

  Cheers,

I am glad I ordered it, even if it ends up being most useful at

Re: Standscan question

2013-03-18 Thread Sandratomkins
hi Keith,

Things that are a little thicker are no problem, but this will all be a
matter of degree. I have just spent a little time playing with various CD
covers and found that when the writing, on the back, is black on white, I get a
reasonable OCR, but it is prone to a little flack (Siri won't give me the
original spelling of that word!) because the lights shine on the surface of the
plastic. This is just a fact of life! However, when the writing was, say, white
on black, or, and this is very common, the writing is superimposed on a
pattern, then both Prizmo and Text Grabber could not give me a result. Text
Grabber did do it sometimes, but the result wasn't very clear. So, CDs boxes
could be problematical, possibly, one of the few times when not using the light
but only ambient light might be in order.

Re food boxes/tins etc, some of the same issues may apply because it is
often the case that manufacturers like to pep up their visuals with colours,
but, in general, you will be able to get something, but here's the thing, if
you use a BarCode app, it is much easier to find the code using the StandScan
Pro, and, with, say, RedLaser, you don't even need the lights as this app is
very good at using its' own. I had great success by rolling, slowly, a can of
peas across the base of the box. So, something to play with.

Finally, I have only experimanted with Prizmo, and so don't know if my new
love Text Grabber is as good, but with prizmo you can get good double page
shots from paper backs, however, this is more difficult because it involves
holding the pages flat and this can be problematical, especially, toward the
front or back of the book, half way through is usually a doddle! When people
get using their StandScans and get more adventurous, those of us who have tips
to share will do so, i am sure, as to how to gety the best results with
scanning from books.

HTH, Sandy.

RE: Standscan question

2013-03-17 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Keith and Mich,

A CD or DVD case or certain boxes should not be a problem. Obviously a box
that is 6 or 8 inches won't work since it would mean it's way to close to
the top of the box where your phone lies.

I believe Anne or Sandy or maybe both posted scan results from a book, once
again, a long as the book fits in the box it should be OK.

RE: Standscan question

2013-03-17 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Rebecca,

I won't write anything here about it except 3 things:

1. You can read about it and order it at www.Standscan.com, $29.95.

2. You can use "VIPHONE" without the quotes as a discount code to get
10% off and a free 12 Volt DC Power Adapter (normally $4.45).

3. Please read through some of the last 2 or so dozen of posts about
Standscan because it's all been discussed, explained and answered.

Re: Standscan question

2013-03-17 Thread Andy Baracco
It’s not a scanner. It’s basically a box that you place your iPhone on top, and
your reading material underneath. You use an OCR app like Prizmo to scan your
paper copy and the box holds the phone in just the right position to assist in
getting a good scan. The box also has an LED to make sure that there is enough
light. It can be run off of a 9 volt battery, 8 AA batteries, or an AC adapter.
It’s simply a device to help a blind person to get better scanning results, but
it is not a scanner.

RE: standscan question due to my ignorance

2013-03-11 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi David,

I am afraid you are wrong on that one. I grew up in Germany with A4 and A3
paper as part of my school supplies. A4 is 210 mm wide by 290 mm long. In
fact, if you put an A4 piece of paper on an 8.5x11 inch letter size piece of
paper here in North America it is ever so slightly narrower and a bit more
than that longer. In inches (to the fourth decimal) it is 8.2677 inches wide
by 11.4173 inches long. This means just aa hair over 8 and a quarter wide or
less than a quarter inches narrower than 8.5x11 inch paper and a little less
than half an inch or just over 1 cm longer.

Anyhow, for all intents and purposes of the Standscan it really makes no
difference.

Regards,

Sieghard
