Markdown is a way to format text in a simple text editor such as Voice Dream
Writer or the Plain Text iOS app. You can make lists, headings, bold and
italicize text, and much more. Here's a good link that goes through the
different things you can do with Markdown. It took me a bit to find a good
article.

The Ultimate Guide to Writing & Publishing with Markdown

I'm not sure why I can't get an actual link instead of a Google link. Google's
been doing that a lot lately--opening pages as Google links, I mean--instead of
redirecting me to the actual site. If that link doesn't work, Googling The
Ultimate Guide to Markdown, by John O'Nolan, should yield results. I hope this
helps.

Thanks,

2017-02-01 Thread Richard Turner

yes, if you use Writer's proof reading function. It is part of the learning
curve, but I found it easy to get used to. Plus, the spell check allows you to
find misspelled words and correct one, then go to the next in context, etc. I
think it is the best app for editing.
There is a good article on Writer in the February AppleVis newsletter.

Re: Ulysses was Re: Text editing/word processing

2017-01-31 Thread Richard Turner

To say an app is straight forward is hard, since it depends on how detailed you
want to be. The manual is very good and learning the mark down symbols, for me,
was pretty easy.
If you want a bulleted list, you simply put a hyphen before each item.
To get the document on dropbox, you would then select the export button at the
top of the screen.
Double tap on export to external location. Double tap on the format, say rtf,
then double tap on dropbox. Then you will be able to pick the folder on dropbox
you want.
Then hit the upload or done button, I can't quite remember what it is called,
but it will be pretty clear at that point.
You can easily have different heading levels, like heading level 1, 2, 3, etc.
You simply put a number sign at the beginning of the line. If you want heading
level 2, use two number signs, etc.
It is worth taking the time to really learn the features. It deals with
selecting text much the same as Voice Dream Reader. Plus, if you have purchased
voices for Voice Dream Reader, they work in Writer.
Pages gets a low rating because it is such a pain to use.
At least, in my opinion.
I hope that helps.

Also, is it easy to spell check and to format the document with voiceover with
Ulysses on the iPhone?

Thanks so much,
Christina

Re: Ulysses was Re: Text editing/word processing

2017-01-31 Thread Michael Feir
Scrivener didn't seem to let me enter apostrophes. It kept giving a short
beep whenever I tried. Also, I found it tricky to import all the files I
wanted to from Dropbox. I love the basic philosophy behind Scrivener but I
just didn't have the experience I thought I would. I've had a much smoother
experience with Ulysses. I'm learning more of the markdown language as I
need to. So far, it has the formatting commands I require. Basic formatting
like centering and such is quite simple. I've written lettres and exported
them as HTML, text and other formats. I haven't done footnotes but there is
a command to add them when needed. You may want to check out the FAQ at:
ulyssesapp.com/faq
It should be possible to get the user guide as well. Lots of helpful info
on their site for Mac and iOS. I did read that they can't offer student
discounts or anything like that so you'd be paying full price as I
understand it. however, the seem to be simple text commands for adding lots
of things including images.

Re: Text editing/word processing

2017-01-31 Thread Michael Feir
I'd say Wordbook compares quite nicely to Wordweb. For some reason, Wordweb
got harder to use for me on iOS. It's a great app and I'd be happy to learn
it was back to being fully useable. It was great on Windows too. Wordbook
gives comparable definitions.

There have been times when Ulysses has gone on sale of been given away.
That happened quite a bit in the NANO Wrimo month which they helped
sponsor. It certainly is a pricy app but I don't regrette my purchase. It
has met all my needs so splendidly that I may never write anything
substantial on my laptop again.

I'm very surprised that Pages isn't free on both Mac and iOS. I wonder why
that is. I do remember that it used to cost around $20 on iOS years ago.

Agile Tortoise made an app called Drafts which might also be worth your
checking out. I don't know if it's available on Mac but I know it can tie
into Dropbox. Hope you find a writing solution which works well for you.
It's damned nice to leave my laptop behind and still be able to get
everything done on my iPHONE and a Bluetooth keyboard.

Re: Text editing/word processing

2017-01-31 Thread Traci Duncan
Thank you everyone for the suggestions. I have a few follow up questions.

Word Book sounds cool. How would you compare it to WordWeb? That’s the app
I’ve been using for years.

Ulysses is $19.99 in IOS App store and $44.99 in Mac App Store. Am I
understanding correctly, if you wanted both it would be the combined price?
The Mac $44.99 doesn’t include the iOS app?

I also looked up Pages. It will be free for my iPhone, but not my Mac. I am
very surprised to see a 2-1/2 star rating in the Mac store. Wonder what people
don’t like about it. Of course the appeal to purchasing native Apple apps, is
they should stick around and remain accessible.

Is Voice Dream Writer pretty straight forward? Let’s say I want to quickly
write a list of donation items. I then want that to sink up with Dropbox, so I
can add or modify the list later on my Mac. Also, did I read I can export in
RTF? Are there sharing options, like share to social media?

On my Mac, I use I-Text-Express. Those documents are all in RTF.

Thank you,
Traci

I really like Voice Dream Writer. It also uses mark down language. It is
designed for the blind, so extremely user friendly.
It is worth the $9.99.

WordBook sounds interesting, but when I searched for it I found two apps from
different developers with the same name. What is the developer for the one you
are recommending?

Thanks,

Hello. I recommend Ulysses. It's fully accessible now. Since Apple figured out
how to improve text selection, I haven't found any good reason to use Voice
Dream Writer. It's easy to select, cut and paste chunks of text in Pages or
other mainstream writing apps. Proof-reading is quite possible using the
built-in spellchecker in iOS. Ulysses is expensive but I use it all the time.
It's great for keeping stuff organised and writing long documents like the iOS
guide I'm working on for blind people. I can have a sepearte sheet for each
major section and rearrange them at will. I can also cut and paste minor
sections withinn a sheet. Ulysses uses markdown language for formatting so you
can always know what's going on since the Markdown characters are all text
symbols.

There's always Pages which is free from Apple and Microsoft Word which is free
from Microsoft. Both are quite useable. For a good accessible
dictionary/thesaurus app, I suggest Wordbook. It does the job rather nicely.
There's also another great one called Terminology. Both apps will work even
when offline so you'll never be without some assistance finding the right word.
Haven't found any satisfactory offline encyclopedias but the Wikipedia Mobile
app is great provided you're online. I've heard they have some agreement with
carriers so that it doesn't even cost you cellular data to look up things on
there. And of course, the Google app is a good addition to anybody's home
screens. Its voice search can often out-do Siri.

You might also want to look at another app called Scrivener. It was designed
with authors in mind and is a close competitor. To Ulysses I prefer Ulysses
overall but it comes down to personal taste and overall approach. Hope that
helps you out a bit.

VoiceDream Writer costs $9.99, but it is so worth it. You can spellcheck and
proofread your documents. I'm not sure if it syncs up with DropBox, but it does
sync with iCloud so whenever you edit a document, it is automatically updated.
Also when you create the document, and name iot, you don't have to save. It is
really an awesome app

Re: Text editing/word processing

2017-01-31 Thread Michael Feir
Hello. I recommend Ulysses. It's fully accessible now. Since Apple figured
out how to improve text selection, I haven't found any good reason to use
Voice Dream Writer. It's easy to select, cut and paste chunks of text in
Pages or other mainstream writing apps. Proof-reading is quite possible
using the built-in spellchecker in iOS. Ulysses is expensive but I use it
all the time. It's great for keeping stuff organised and writing long
documents like the iOS guide I'm working on for blind people. I can have a
sepearte sheet for each major section and rearrange them at will. I can
also cut and paste minor sections withinn a sheet. Ulysses uses markdown
language for formatting so you can always know what's going on since the
Markdown characters are all text symbols.
There's always Pages which is free from Apple and Microsoft Word which is
free from Microsoft. Both are quite useable. For a good accessible
dictionary/thesaurus app, I suggest Wordbook. It does the job rather
nicely. There's also another great one called Terminology. Both apps will
work even when offline so you'll never be without some assistance finding
the right word. Haven't found any satisfactory offline encyclopedias but
the Wikipedia Mobile app is great provided you're online. I've heard they
have some agreement with carriers so that it doesn't even cost you cellular
data to look up things on there. And of course, the Google app is a good
addition to anybody's home screens. Its voice search can often out-do Siri.

You might also want to look at another app called Scrivener. It was
designed with authors in mind and is a close competitor. To Ulysses I
prefer Ulysses overall but it comes down to personal taste and overall
approach. Hope that helps you out a bit.

2017-01-31 Thread Jennie Facer
Hi Tracy,

VoiceDream Writer costs $9.99, but it is so worth it. You can spellcheck and
proofread your documents. I'm not sure if it syncs up with DropBox, but it does
sync with iCloud so whenever you edit a document, it is automatically updated.
Also when you create the document, and name iot, you don't have to save. It is
really an awesome app
