An alternative to the above (correct) solutions is as follows:

1) Open “Settings”
2) Locate and select “Phone”
3) In the resulting dialog find “Block Callers” and select it.
4) At the top of this resulting dialog you should encounter an “Add” button,
select that button.
5) Look for the resulting edit box and type in the “offending” phone number.

NOTE: This will block calls as well as texts from that number.

can’t say how. Maybe try opening the message, then swiping up or down to see

I don’t know about blocking a message sender,

But you can delete bulk messages by going in to messages,

Clicking on the edit button at the very top left,

Then select

Select messages,

Then go through and select each message you wish to delete,

Note this doesn’t have to be every message,

And then right at the very bottom of the screen or page is a delete,

Or if you wanted the other side,

There is a read all just above it.

Hope this helps.

to block someone it is kind of buried, but here is how.

1, Double tap on the name or number you want to block.
2, From the top, swipe one time, you will have the name or number as a button,
double tap it.
3, From the top, swipe once you should here audio, keep swiping a couple of
times until you hear info, and double tap. If you go pass info, you can not
back up, you have to go back to the top and swipe right until you get to info
again. Double tap on info.
4, From the top, you should have a done button, swipe right until you get to
another info, and double tap.
5, Now you are finally on the screen you want. The last thing on this screen
should say, block caller. This will block calls as well as messages.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, finally, I got all of them out - got some junk ones, had 19.

I wish there were a way to block one without having to block both. I get
messages from an automated service that calls and texts, I only want the texts.
They don't seem to know how to stop the calls without stopping both, I'll bet
there is a way to do this on their end when I get to the right person.

As for blocking texters, yes you can.

Open the text message.

At the top, do a one finger double tap and hold, or a one finger triple tap to
bring up the context menu.

Find the info button and double tap.

There may or may not be another Info button, but if there is double tap on it.
If there isn’t, try bringing up the context menu again on the phone number.

At one point, you will find the same options as when you bring up the context
menu on a recent phone call, things like call, message, share location, add to
contacts, create new, and finally at the end Block this caller.

Double tap on that, then find the block contact button and double tap again and
now they are added to your blocked callers list.

This blocks that number from calling or texting.

I wish it was as straight forward as blocking a recent phone call.
