Otterbox just announced today the preserver series of cases that are water
proof. I don't know when they'll be out, but they will cost $89.

Hi Wren,

I don't agree with the person who said the Lifeproof case is a nice case.
It is not bad, but I bought one for my 4S a couple of years ago and while it
does offer good protection (as does the Otterbox Defender) it find both the
case and the belt clip is too bulky for my taste and daily use.

I also find the audio is slightly distorted when the phone is properly in my
case with the headphone jack cover screwed in and it's a pain in the neck to
unscrew this and make sure I don't lose it every time I decide I want to
quickly plug in my headset. I guess it would be OK if somebody used a
Bluetooth headset/earpiece with it as their preferred way to use a headset,
but I just happen to like the apple Earpods better than any Bluetooth
headset I have seen and tried so far. I usually don't bother screwing in the
plug unless I really need that complete waterproofness and using their
waterproof headset connector is also not a good solution because if you use
it you can only use a headset.

Lastly, my Lifeproof case has not been used all that much, but the little
door that you close and snap into place after you made sure the case is
properly sealed all the way around is now starting to come off and at this
point my case would be no longer waterproof. I just noticed this last week
when I collected all my 4S accessories as I am getting ready to sell my
unlocked 4S 64 Gb am I have to call Lifeproof today and see if they would
consider this a warranty.

In conclusion I would say that if you really felt you needed a waterproof
case then the Lifeproof case is OK, but I would certainly check out other
options before I bought one for my 5S.

Regards,

Sieghard

Hi have you considered the life proof case? It goes completely around the
phone and is waterproof. There is a little door that you open with your
fingernail to recharge the phone, and there is a little screw that you have
to undo to get your headphones. The person who has one says it is easy to do
and the case has a screen protector and a slimmer than the OtterBox case.
God bless, Wren PS I have not seen it yet, but I do plan to buy a 5S
sometime in the future, and I will consider this case it is $79 at Best Buy,
and it is from what I understand a very nice case and you can purchase
either an armband separately or a belt clip separately or both if you are
like me. Smile.

Hi Kelly,

I just bought my 5S on Thursday. I didn't like the Otter Box case because
it was so bulky and also because some of my friends had nothing but trouble
with the trap doors that kept breaking. I had a leather case to go on my
belt so I put on my phone a protector that covers all around and the back.
I think they called it the Fiber 21 or something like that. The material is
some form of fiber that is supposed to distribute the shock if you drop the
phone rather than taking the shock only where it hit. I also got an
insurance that covers absolutely everything including dropping the phone in
the toilet. There is a deductible of $250 to replace the phone for a new
one. Considering that the 5S 32 gig in Canada is almost a $1000.00 phone
when you add the taxes, I think its well worth it. The insurance is $10.00
a month

  Hi,
I concur the outer silicone covering is much improved in the otterbox
defender for the 5s and the accommodation for the fingerprint reader doesn’t
seem to have caused any degradation in the built in screen protector in my
opinion.
I think this time out they did a great job in its design.

I admit they did drop the ball with the 4, the rubber bumper surrounding the
case got flimsy to quick and warn fast. But they really improved it with the
5, and even better with the 5s. Especially with access to the finger print
reader, it is sit away from the hole so it doesn't get pushed easily. And the
bumper casing is much much tougher. Also, the head phone jack cover is in line
with the actual plug, so there is no adjusting for it. I heard the life proof
case doesn't allow access to the finger print reader. Haven't seen one, so
can't confirm this. But I also don't want to pay 80 bucks for a case, JMO that
is a bit high for my liking.

this case from Ballistic is working out nicely. I don't have access to the

Otterbox cases clamp the iPhone into place, which can wiggle and
scratch the glass of the screen. Also the sides of the iPhone are
much more exposed than on the Ballistic iPhone case, which encases the

Consider the hard core case but also the new cases from the rugged

Hi Sieghard,

The insurance I have on my apartment would cover the iPhone but I have a
$500 deductible because, when I had a $250 deductible with full replacement
value, it was costing me an arm and a leg. Even if I wanted to put the
iPhone on my apartment insurance, it would cover theft but it wouldn't cover
loss, accidental drop or water or snow damage. In the country where you

full of salt, black and very slushy. You drop your phone in that and chances

last winter and his phone fell on the ground in that slush.

Another reason why I bought the insurance from Bell is that you can cancel
it at any time but you can't purchase it later. It has to be purchased with
the phone. If I get brave, I could cancel in a few months after the Winter

Hi Ron,

I assume it depends on your insurance underwriter and my suggestion was
just that, a suggestion people can check out. I went up to a $5,000
deductable on my house insurance since I used to have a $1,000 deductable,
but my premium kept going up even though I never had a claim. Anyhow, I
figured even at $1,000 the insurance is not much good if something which is
up to $1,500 or so gets stolen and if the place happens to burn down having
a $5,000 deductable on a $300K home + all the content won't make much
difference any more, either. Anyhow, my iPhone insurance is a separate rider
which only raised my premium by about $30 or $35 a year and for that
particular item I have a $0 deductable for theft, loss or breaking it.
Having said that, I also bought the $99 Apple Care since the insurance I
have via my home is not really a replacement for the extra year of warranty
you get with Apple Care and how easy going Apple is. I had my iPhone 4S
replaced twice in the last half year and the second time was just last week
when my iPhone 5S shipped which means I now have a completely unused, never
activated and unlocked 4S 64 Gb to sell. That fact alone probably gets me
$100 more for the phone than if it was a 2-year old 4S and when I bought
Apple Care for the 4S 2 years ago it was only $79 instead of the $99 I paid
now, 20% less, not a bad price hike, eh?

While I wait, I have been trying to read up on possible case options. I find

I am curious on what cases are out there that offer excellent protection for

what I currently have for my 4s and it has not lived up to expectations. I
like the Otter box concept and would like to know are there any other cases
out there, which are similar. I want the phone completely encased and to
include a built in screen protector. Also, I don’t want the case to be any

My husband is thinking of just getting one of the leather cases from apple

it was so bulky and also because some of my friends had nothing but
trouble with the trap doors that kept breaking. I had a leather case to
go on my belt so I put on my phone a protector that covers all around and
the back. I think they called it the Fiber 21 or something like that.
The material is some form of fiber that is supposed to distribute the
shock if you drop the phone rather than taking the shock only where it
hit. I also got an insurance that covers absolutely everything including
dropping the phone in the toilet. There is a deductible of $250 to
replace the phone for a new one. Considering that the 5S 32 gig in Canada
is almost a $1000.00 phone when you add the taxes, I think its well worth
it. The insurance is $10.00 a month

 Hey all,
so I finally placed my order for a gold 5s and am waiting, probably not so
patiently, for it to arrive. it is going to be a while. *lol*

While I wait, I have been trying to read up on possible case options. I
find that many say they work for the 5, but no mention of the 5s. I assume
this is do to the finger print sensor.

I am curious on what cases are out there that offer excellent protection
for the phone. everyone seems to be promoting the otter box, however, that
is what I currently have for my 4s and it has not lived up to
expectations. I like the Otter box concept and would like to know are
there any other cases out there, which are similar. I want the phone

I have ordered the Life Proof case because I'm going to take up rowing and
thought it would be a good one for that. I'm not worried about the
headphone part of it as I will most likely use Bluetooth when I need
headphones. I can't wait to see the size and how it functions.

Take care,

Hi have you considered the life proof case? It goes completely around the
phone and is waterproof. There is a little door that you open with your
fingernail to recharge the phone, and there is a little screw that you have
to undo to get your headphones. The person who has one says it is easy to do
and the case has a screen protector and a slimmer than the OtterBox case.
God bless, Wren PS I have not seen it yet, but I do plan to buy a 5S
sometime in the future, and I will consider this case it is $79 at Best Buy,
and it is from what I understand a very nice case and you can purchase
either an armband separately or a belt clip separately or both if you are
like me. Smile.

RE: cases for 5s which offer excellent protection

2013-10-15 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

Sieghard

Hi, I'd like to say that I purchased a black case of this type for my
silver iPhone 5s and do like it very much. The built-in screen protector
seems to be better than those offered by Otter box, although admittedly
I haven't seen the iPhone 5 version of the Defender Otterbox cases
either. I wasn't impressed with their iPhone 4 version and so went away
from Otterbox. I loved the 3G/3GS versions, but feel they dropped the
ball with the 4. In any case, this case from Ballistic is working out
nicely. I don't have access to the finger print reader of the home
button but that hasn't been an issue yet for me. Knowing me and the way
I am, I'll most likely be getting another case to try out. This is what
I do after all, and so will be happy to try out something which protects
the phone as well and still offers access to the finger print scanner.

Cheers.

Otterbox cases clamp the iPhone into place, which can wiggle and

like the Otter box concept and would like to know are there any other cases

Re: cases for 5s which offer excellent protection

2013-10-14 Thread Harry Bell
I use a Mophie juice pack plus for my 5S. Once you realize that the bottom bit
has to be pulled off before inserting the 5S ( which I didn't - with fraught
consequences before my sighted partner rescued me!), it is brilliant even
though it does not state it is for the 5S. The whole of the front including
touch sensor is uncovered so no problems there.

RE: cases for 5s which offer excellent protection

2013-10-14 Thread Lois Butterfield
I got the commuter and didn't like it. It was a loose enough fit that the
phone would slide closer to the top, which made it hard to open the portals
in the bottom to get to things. I ended up with an S TPU case that is
clear. If I want more protection, I put the phone with case on inside a
wallet or other slide-in case that I can clip to what I'm wearing. It also
fits in most phone pockets in purses. I have the commuter to fall back on
should I ever want that protection.

This set-up works well for me, but I am very careful with my phone. It
doesn't get dropped.

Take care,

Lois

Re: cases for 5s which offer excellent protection

2013-10-14 Thread Kelly Pierce
In January, I bought a Ballistic Hard Core case for my iPhone 5. This
was shortly after the consumer electronics show. At that time, many
of the vendors who sold rugged and durable electronic equipment to the
military and construction industry were just beginning to offer iPhone
cases for the consumer market. Their products were going to be
introduced this summer. My case is better than the Otterbox because
it sandwiches the iPhone tightly between two very hard pieces of
plastic, exposing the screen with a screen protector. This encases
the iPhone completely and visually the device likely won’t be
recognized as an iPhone. This sort of defeats the purpose of a golden
iPhone though. I understand it is elegant and sparkling. On the
other hand a toddler could pick up my iPhone in a Hard core case and
give it a forceful toss without damaging it. It is a little bulky,
but I have the protection of something virtually indestructible.
Otterbox cases clamp the iPhone into place, which can wiggle and
scratch the glass of the screen. Also the sides of the iPhone are
much more exposed than on the Ballistic iPhone case, which encases the
iPhone completely between a form fitting upper and bottom layer.
Consider the hard core case but also the new cases from the rugged
device companies.

Kelly

RE: cases for 5s which offer excellent protection

2013-10-14 Thread Ron Pelletier

The insurance is $10.00
a month

RE: cases for 5s which offer excellent protection

2013-10-14 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Ron,

Npot sure if you have home owners insurance, but while I bought Apple Care
for the peace of mind, I also added my iPhone to my homeowner's policy. This
meant I had to provide the serial number and it is very specific, it costs
me about $30 a year more on my home's insurance policy with $0 deductable
specifically for the iPhone. This means even if it is stolen I would get
100% replacement value. My homeowner's policy is underwritten by Wawanesa
her e in Canada.
