Yes, the keyboard should provide you with access to just about everything a
touch of the screen can do. I have found using a Bluetooth keyboard very
strange on an iOS device. It seems to take much more effort interacting with
iOS via keyboard rather than simply picking up the device and using the
touch screen.

For example, when I first launched the iOS Calculator to begin using with my
external keyboard, I believed I could enter numbers using the number row on
the external keyboard, but this is of course not the case in iOS. One must
use the keyboard equivalent of a swiping gesture to locate numbers on the
calculator. This is of course incredibly inefficient, and one will find it
difficult to ignore the desire to pickup the iDevice and begin tapping on
the keypad rather than using the external keyboard. I hope someone knows of
a better solution and will increase the list's pool of knowledge. Smile.

Oh yeah, to actually answer your question...

You can use your Bluetooth keyboard's right arrow key to move to an app
then, depending on the keyboard, execute a simultaneous press of the up and
down arrow keys to actually open an app.

Jenny, I have a question for you. Can you go to an item with your blue tooth
keyboard, and open that item, and then, make it do what it is supposed to
do, just using commands from your keyboard? Jim

Hi Jim,

If you go to:
www.appleVis.com
there are tons of podcasts on the iDevices. There is a podcast on bluetooth
keyboards that I think was done pretty well.

That said, you are in the right group, and I hope we can answer some of your
specific questions. I also have an iPad mini and I use it more than my PC
nowdays.

Hope this helps,

Also, if quick navigation is off, which it should be by default if you're not
in andedit field, you can just press right or left arrow to go forward or back
through items as if you were flicking on the screen using one finger. When you
want to activate something, press up and down arrow together at the same time.

The most essential commands are control-option-left or right arrow, to move
 left or
right (like flicking one finger). Control-option-space will activate
 (simulate a
double tap) the item VO just spoke. I don't know about this specific
 keyboard, but
try just control-alt (alt and option are the same thing, usually) instead of
 that
shift key. Yes, applevis.com is a great resource, and I encourage you to look
 up
bluetooth keyboards and iOS to see what resources are available. Also, try
control-option-k to enter keyboard learn mode, so you can play with all the
 keys
and commands and hear exactly what they do.

HI Jim,

Using a keyboard you will have to learn a whole new set of keyboard
commands, so just know that it will take time. I too just began using an iOS
device with a keyboard and found little logic to the command
structure--enter doesn't seem to enter :), so I decided its time to crank up
the muscle memory until the commands fall into reflex status.

If you are new to a touch screen, I suggest you first try to learn how to
use the device as it was intended so you can learn the logic of iOS. Once
you learn how to interact with the device using touch, you can then move on
to using a keyboard and such.

Hi Jim,

I'm not Jenny (I Hope *smile*), but yes, you can navigate to an app and open
it, you can then navigate inside the app and double tap buttons etc. Personally
I find using the touch screen a lot more efficient and I only use my Bluetooth
keyboard if I actually want to type text, but if, for example, I want to reply
to an email I use the touch screen to do so and then only use the keyboard to
type my message.

Jenn

You will undoubtedly use the touch screen much more often than a Bluetooth
keyboard, so it might be easier and will benefit you in the long run to
first learn how the device was meant to be used, then experiment with
alternative ways of interacting with it such as external keyboard and such.

The most essential commands are control-option-left or right arrow, to move
left or

(simulate a
double tap) the item VO just spoke. I don't know about this specific

try just control-alt (alt and option are the same thing, usually) instead of
that
shift key. Yes, applevis.com is a great resource, and I encourage you to
look up
bluetooth keyboards and iOS to see what resources are available. Also, try
control-option-k to enter keyboard learn mode, so you can play with all the
keys
and commands and hear exactly what they do.

that things are different on the IPad mini, so I get that, but, I thought
with my
blue tooth keyboard, I could move from item to item and open them, from the
keyboard. The command alt commands aren't working, for example, It says to
tap and
item command alt space bar should do it. Does that mean open it, or just
highlight
it? In either case, when I try to follow through on the item, I get no
results.
Besides, to get the alt key to work on this keyboard, I have to shift to get
the
option key to become an alt key. So, the command is ?Command, alt, space
bar, but I
have to throw in the shift key to make the alt key work. It's awkward. So, I
guess
what I am asking is this. Is it worth it, to try to use the Bluetooth
keyboard to
do all that with the IPad, or just use it for writing?
I'm having a hard time trying to learn jesters etc. Frown. Thanks if or your
help.
Jim

Hi Jim,

Welcome and yes, things will get better. I am off to work now and it would
also
help if you were a bit more specific as to what exactly does not work with
your
Bluetooth keyboard. Can you give some specific examples of commands you are
trying
and which don't do what they should? Also, which keyboard do you have?

Regards,

Sieghard

Hi All, I apologize if I'm in the wrong group, and if I am, point me to the
right
one please.

I have a new IPad mini with IOS 7.1, and a blue tooth keyboard. I got the
Bluetooth
keyboard, because I thought it would be easier than the one on the IPad.
But, the
keyboard commands that I have from a book from Braille press don't seem to
work on
it. I'm about ready to throw the darn thing in the trash. Help please.

I've been a PC user for 15 years and can do things really fast on it, but
this is
so darn slow at this point. Does it ever get easier? I need help. Jim

Here is a podcast

https://www.sendspace.com/pro/dl/9e3q9x

There is one command that is partially mentioned in this podcast. He tells you
how to move and app to a folder. If you need to create a folder with apps you
have downloaded do the following:
1. shift+control+option+m on the first app to start the process
2. go to the app you wish to create the folder with and repeat the move
command. This will create the folder.
From this point you can use the method he shows to add other apps to the
folder.

If we can't look at ourselves, and ask, why? then where does the learning
start?

Re: new member to the group, desperately looking for questions, and frustrated with my new IPad.

2014-06-18 Thread Joseph FreeTech

Joseph
