RE: the red lazor app

2017-01-30 Thread Chip Orange
According to Richard, you do have to tap the heading which says "Scan" in order
to make it scan after you've had one successful scan (or I think after you've
gone to some other screen like its "settings" screen).

Try that, as I don't think it can hurt.

Don,

It does work on iPhones. You do not have to activate any buttons in order to
get it to scan. When you open the app, the camera is already on, so hold it
over the item that has the barcode you want to scan. It will make a sound when
it finds the barcode.

Then you will see options that allow you to go to Amazon, Google, etc. You
will need to go to one of these in order to find the description of the barcode
that the app found on the package.

hi,
As soon as you open the app it is scanning. obviously, you have to have a
barcode for it to scan. The easiest thing to do would be to have a package, but
you know has a barcode on it, scan the package slowly until you hear a pin or a
vibration. then a new screen will open with the choice of searching Amazon or
Google, are usually choose Google. if you have your rotor set to headings, you
can flick down between the results. When you have finished, there is a done
button at the top.
I hope this helps, Sandy

RE: the red lazor app

2017-01-30 Thread Mike Ulrich
Hi,

I’ve just downloaded the neo reader app to my 5S. I can’t figure out how to
work the app.

How do I take a picture of the bar code?

I’ve given permission for neo reader to use my camera. But I can’t seem to find
where the camera or scan button is?

I heard someone on this thread, mention something about double tapping the Scan
Header. I tried that, and nothing.

Can somebody please explain the whole scanning process to me?

In NeoReader, if you take the app out of the app switcher, it won't stay on. I
can't say if it won't when you just exit the app.

Here are the scanning tips from the Digit-eyes web site, the basic information
is good for any scanning app. Just ignore the spots where it refers to the
clicks and things specific to Digit-eyes. I think everyone should just spend
the $9.99 for Digit-eyes, but these techniques will help with any bar code
scanner. This will also answer the question about how to find bar codes.

Scanning Tips
If you are just starting to use the Digit-Eyes products, click
here
 to learn about scanning.
Q. Where will I find UPC codes?

A. UPC codes are typically located where humans will not find them. They are
oblong, typically at least one half inch / 1 cm in height and at least three
times as long as they are tall. You will find the bar codes are often located:
on boxes: away from the side that is opened.
on cans with wrapped labels: adjacent to the seam where the labels are joined
on jars with a single label: as far away from the center portion of the label
as possible.
on jars with two labels: on the back label (typically the front label will be
larger and may be more elaborate in shape; back labels are typically smaller
and simpler.)
on packages that are rectangular with small sides: on the longer of the two
small sides.
They will almost always be within 4 inches of the bottom of the object because
that is typically the maximum scan height of a supermarket scanner.
Q. What about soda cans and things that don't have obvious labels?

A. It can be difficult to locate codes on items that are round and that have
continuous wrap labels or where the bar code is part of the printing, as on a
soda can. In this case, it is typically necessary to scan the entire label
surface. We've found it convenient to do this by bracing the bottom of the
phone on a table and putting the can in front of it. When the phone is
scanning, it makes ticking noises. Each time that there is a tick, turn the can
1/4 turn in front of the camera. We have found that it rarely takes all four
turns to get a scan.
Q. Any tricks for scanning UPC / EAN codes?

A. When you are starting out, you should definitely try the
practice sheets
. These let you become familiar with the use of the camera.
After getting comfortable with the practice exercises, try a real item and
start with a box. Initially, you will probably find that it is usually easier
to hold the phone steady and turn the item slowly in front of it. One of our
customers reports that he got great results by using a holder from his wife's
plate collection, putting the phone in it and turning the item in front of it.
After you have more a feel for the process, you'll probably want to transition
to holding the phone in your hand, but a hands-free approach can be very useful
when putting the groceries away!
Helpful Hint: If you are having problems with the object, we recommend
rotating it 90 degrees; the bar codes can be scanned from any angle and
rotating the object will cause the autofocus on the camera to reset.
Q. Where will I find the Digit-Eyes codes?

A. The Digit-Eyes codes are printed on address labels before being stuck on
the item that they label.  The labels can be quickly and easily found by touch;
since you are the person who sticks them on the item, you can put them anyplace
that seems convenient.
Q. Any tricks for scanning Digit-Eyes codes?

A. The codes will be captured faster if they are relatively "square" to the
phone. The camera is in the upper right back of the iPhone or iPod when you
are holding the phone with the "home" button at the bottom and facing you.
Locate the code by touch and put the lens of the camera on the code with the
top and right edges of the phone lined up with the top and right edges of the
label. Start the scanning operation and lift the phone away from the code.
It will make the ticking noise until it recognizes the code. At that time it
will beep and vibrate to alert you that it has found the code and is processing
it. After identifying the code, Digit-Eyes will either play the recorded
content or voice the text, if the label was pre-recorded or if it includes
text; otherwise, it will just invite you to record.
Some people find that aligning one of their fingers with the camera and using
it "point" to the code while scanning is a helpful way to make sure the phone
stays aligned, but you will probably not need to do this after you've had a
litt

Don,

No, I'm sure as soon as the app is in the background or closed then the camera
isn't consuming any power.

As for finding the barcode, just slowly rotate the can, or present each side of
the box in front of the camera and give it a few seconds, when I tried it with
a can of soup I slowly rotated the can approx 10 inches in front of the camera
and it vibrated when it saw the barcode. Then it let me search, and then it
told me about what it found.

Thanks to Richard's observation, you wouldn't really have to worry about the
camera being "always on" like I was guessing at first, so we just need to let
them know about these little doc deficiencies (for blind users).

RE: NeoReader, was RE: the red lazor app

2017-01-29 Thread Richard Turner

A. The Digit-Eyes codes are printed on address labels before being stuck on
the item that they label.  The labels can be quickly and easily found by touch;
since you are the person who sticks them on the item, you can put them anyplace
that seems convenient.

Some people find that aligning one of their fingers with the camera and using
it "point" to the code while scanning is a helpful way to make sure the phone
stays aligned, but you will probably not need to do this after you've had a
little bit of practice.
Helpful hint: if VoiceOver persists in talking to you with instructions when
you want to record, you can quiet it with a two-finger double tap.
Q. Does the orientation of the code or label matter?

A. No. Digit-Eyes can read any code in any direction.
Q. How far away should the camera be from the item being scanned?

A. The answer to this question depends on

code on it when set the app up.
So will uninstall it and reinstall it and then make sure am out in the kitchen

So does the camera stay on even when the app is closed?
How will you find the bar code on an item if can't see?

Pam

Ahhh, ok, it seems it is accessing your camera *all* of the time; I
accidentally positioned it over a barcode and it found it! That’s great, just
needed that bit of info that you do nothing in order to start the scanning.

Sandra is right, it’s by far the easiest and best barcode scanning app for
Iphones I’ve ever seen, and very close to the BCScan program with Omni
directional scanner from AT Guys.  Just not exactly designed for blind users;
I’m sure there’s something visually indicating that scanning is happening.

I do suspect you’d have to be careful not to leave it on all the time, I don’t
see how it couldn’t help but be a significant battery drain if it’s always
accessing the camera.

Thanks Sandra,

Chip

RE: the red lazor app

2017-01-29 Thread Chip Orange
Could someone tell me how to use the Neoscan app? I am completely unable to
get it to do anything other than allow me to hand enter a barcode; there seems
to be no choice for it to use the camera to scan the item, although there is a
choice to allow it to use a picture from your photos.

Thanks,

Chip

These and similar apps often cannot read bar codes on cans and bottles

because they have difficulty processing the bar code from the curved

surface of the item. Other apps, like Identifi, match the photo with

package designs in their database along with bar codes. This often

can deliver some data about the item.

What is the best way to use that for scanning bottles boxes and cans and

Re: the red lazor app

2017-01-28 Thread 'Sandratomkins' via VIPhone
I just downloaded one called NeoReader. It seems to have a better
omnidirectional scanner. you don't get the results straight away, you have to
choose Amazon or Google search, I choose Google, and then are usually get very
good results!

RE: the red lazor app

2017-01-27 Thread Ekstrand, Pamela A. -ND
I used to have good luck with Red Laser, but lately it seems like the app
either crashes or when it finds the barcode, it only reads out the UPC code
itself rather than identifying the product.

These and similar apps often cannot read bar codes on cans and bottles
because they have difficulty processing the bar code from the curved
surface of the item. Other apps, like Identifi, match the photo with
package designs in their database along with bar codes. This often
can deliver some data about the item.
