RE: Color App

2014-02-03 Thread Tess
I downloaded camfind last night and tested it and out of the 5 random
selected dress shirts I have all were 100% correct in color first try.

I just went to the room that had the best lighting in my apartment and took
the picture.

For a free product, I thought it was great.

It will probably due for myself until something better comes along.

100+ dollars for something can get expensive for some folks, so, just my
opinion, thanks for someone who mentioned camfind.

Hi Isaac,

Did you actually look at the website for which you provided the link? As far
as I can tell they sell key ring identifiers, so-called buddy bands and
buddy tags and stuff like that in all colours of the rainbow so to speak,
but I sure did not find a color identifier. However, doing a Google search
for "Rainbow Color Identifier" did produce an Amazon link, but you can also
buy it from Maxiaids either on their website or by phone and incidently if
you buy it on Amazon it still comes from Maxiaids. Here is the link and I
think we should then close the topic since while it started out as being on
topic with a question about colour identifier apps, it's not really iOS
related any more.

RE: Color App

2014-02-03 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Andrew,

The link Isaac gave is not correct as far as I can tell. But as usual Google is
your friend here, just typing in “Rainbow Color Identifier” gave me the Amazon
link right away:

http://www.amazon.com/Rainbow-Color-Reader-Talking-Identifier/dp/B008OVGVZU

If you go there you’ll see that this product comes from maxiaids so you could
of course also buy it from them directly at www.maxiaids.com
<http://www.maxiaids.com> or order it on the phone with them.

The Amazon page also has a link for the Colorino Color Identifier which is the
more expensive product. However, while the Rainbow Color Identifier identifies
38 colors, e.g. grey, light grey, dark grey, dark dark grey etc.) the Colorino
can do 150 colors.

Also, apparently using the Rainbow as a light detector it will say “Light” if
you point it towards a light source whereas the Colorino emits a tone which
increases in frequency if the light is bright or you point it directly into the
light.

If you do look on Amazon you’ll see that the Rainbow has 4 out of 5 Stars, but
only one person reviewed it and gave it 4 Stars. The Colorino gets 2.5 out of 5
Stars with 2 total reviews. One person gave it also 4 out of 5 Stars and the
other gave it 1 out of 5 Stars. When I read the bad review I realized that they
just didn’t use it correctly. I have had the Colorino for probably 12 or 15
years and it never failed me. However, you do have to hold it right up against
whatever it is you are trying to identify and by that I mean press the opening
where the sensor it right into or against the material. If you hold it a few
inches away it will always say “Black”. This is because it has it’s own light
source and the sensor and any other light has to be blocked out. I think all
colour identifiers like this work this way and it’s part of the reason why
colour identifier apps on the iPhone do such a poor job. They see the colour in
whatever light it is including shadows and hence you rarely get consistent
results.

Even though I really like my Colorino, I think if basic color identification is
what you want and you don’t want to spend too much money the Rainbow color
identifier is the product to try especially if you don’t necessarily have to
rely on it as a light detector. Here the iPhone works well with the app “Light
Detector”.

If a product like the Rainbow for $99 was available when I bought my color
identifier I probably would have bought it, too, althought I think I only paid
$150 for the Colorino back then.

Sieghard

I highly recommend Rainbow Color Reader -- a stand alone color identifier for
$99. It is extremely accurate. I have not had luck with the color ID apps for
iPhone, though I have not tried CamFind yet and am looking forward to doing so.

RE: Color App

2014-02-02 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I have tried a few, but found none is very accurate and consistent. The
problem with using the iPhone is that you are dealing with constantly
changing light conditions, shadows and so on. Some people have reported they
get very good results with Tap Tap See because I assume a person provides
the feedback, but then again we are bac to the discussion about the fact you
have to pay to use Tap Tap See. You would be better off investing the $150
or whatever it is to get a good stand-alone colour identifier from a place
like Maxiaids or Blind Mice Mart. The one I have had for probably at least
10 or 15 years is I think the Colorino Colour Identifier which I am quite
sure is still sold. It can identify about 150 colours and usually it does a
great job.
