I can put in my Email address , but when i double tap on the enter password, it doesn't seem to do anything. Hope someone can help. Re: Stop force closing apps on your iPhone, it's not making it run faster or last longer
IMHO, I agree with the article that forcing apps to close isn't necessary all of the time, and I don't do it myself slavishly because it takes time, and I'd rather have the iPhone manage it's tasks than to spend my time doing it for IOS. Developers spent a lot of effort and thought implementing multi-tasking, so I'm going to take advantage of that feature, just like I do other features on my iPhone. I think the article over simplifies how multi-tasking works. I doubt the apps actually close. What I suspect happens is that the memory they're taking is cached and the processor stops giving that app any cycles. For all practical purposes, the app is not running, but the last state of the app is still captured in cached memory. this is why for example, no matter how long you don't switch to your Mail app, when you do switch to it, you'll be looking at the last message you were reading or in the last folder you were browsing. If you force close your Mail app then when you bring it back up, you'll be back in your In Box. The article's example of apps being in your App Switcher after you power off and power on your phone is also misleading. The iPhone could be going into suspend or hibernation mode when you power it off, so it's saving the state of each app, just as it does when the phone is running but an app isn't being used. I agree with others that there could always be a rogue app that has a memory leak or doesn't always idle itself as much as it could, so there's definitely a reason to force close some apps. Also, as good as Apple's multi-tasking and memory management is, there are times when it makes sense to free up as much memory and processing power as possible, such as when upgrading or loading a particularly memory or processor intensive app. I don't think force closing apps has a negative impact other than taking some user time, so if you want to do it then go ahead. It's your time to spend any way you want. When in the App ?Switcher, VoiceOver announces the state of each app as you flick between them. It'll be interesting to pay attention to see what those different states are. I haven't paid attention to them myself before. Re: Stop force closing apps on your iPhone, it's not making it run faster or last longer
There has been recent comment (in newspaper tech columns) that several users have found that Facebook doesn't close properly (as when not in use) in recent versions of the app; that it's also draining the iPhone battery by constantly updating one's location etc information in the background. Facebook says that it's "investigating". -Original Message- From: Sieghard Weitzel Sent: Wednesday, October 21, 2015 6:19 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: Stop force closing apps on your iPhone, it's not making it run faster or last longer Maybe so and maybe no. Re: Stop force closing apps on your iPhone, it's not making it run faster or last longer
It can't hurt, but I also don't want to be an "app switcher neat freak" and close every app each time it is opened. I usually keep my app switcher with between 10 and 14 apps running at any one time, and often more like 10 to 12. IMO, too much above that and you are slowing down your device. Currently running an iPhone 6S with iOS 9.0.2. I bring this up since I know people who, each time they get an email in Gmail, they will delete it and then go and empty their trash. This is overkill in my opinion. The iPhone is smart enough to manage these things in the background. I often find apps in the switcher which will not say active, menaing iOS has closed them to better use resources. Wayne On 10/21/15, Kellie wrote: > I agree with you on this. I agree with you on this. I have had in the past where my battery was rundown until I close something that was running. So has my friend. I can't speak of recent years since this was a while ago. However, it's not hurting me to waste 10 seconds to close apps. Kellie and my lovable Lady J Sent from my iPhone > On Oct 21, 2015, at 12:19 PM, Sieghard Weitzel wrote: > > Maybe so and maybe no. I have read articles like this before and while this may be correct theoretically, I think what the author does not consider is that not all apps are created equal. How often have you seen something in the What's New section of an app that menbtions the developer has fixed a memory leak or fixed something which caused excessive use of battery power or they fixed something which caused the app to remain active in the background. I have seen all of these in the last 5 years at some point or another so all it takes is a developer who hasn't done a good job with their code and of course removing the offending app from the app switcher will fix this. Therefore I happily continue to waste 10 or 20 seconds of my valueable time once or twice a day to force quit the apps I don't use. For the amount of time it took the author to write this article and post it, he could have probably closed apps on his phone once a day for years to come especially since I think a sighted person can swipe up and close multiple or even all apps at once.
