Re: Using older and current iPhones on a cruise

2012-11-04 Thread Wayne Merritt
Thanks to all that have responded. I was hoping that I could use my
phone in airplane mode while on the boat. I would rather use the
phones in airplane mode, than mess with older equipment that I no
longer use, to make the recordings or take the pictures. This is all
good information.

I recently returned from a cruise and had no problem using my iPhone or

options, via Settings, you can turn cellular data, wifi and Bluetooth
on/off as you desire. When in a U.S. port you may (but are not
guaranteed) to be able to access your carrier.

One thing to always keep in mind, there are no cell towers at sea, so if
you really want access to the internet, your only option is to use
services (cellular and/or slow wifi) provided by the ship which can be
costly. The cruise lines usually offer wifi packages that save you
some, but IMHO they are still costly.

Before I left I loaded books I wanted to read and music I might want to
listen to onto my devices. While at sea I had time to relax and catch
up on my reading, and learn how to get around some of Voiceovers quirks.

Greetings all. I will be going on a cruise a week from tomorrow and
had some questions about hopefully using my iPhone on the cruise ship.
First off, realizing that cruise ship Internet cafe prices are
expensive, is it possible to use one's iPhone in airplane mode on the
ship when in international waters? I called the cruise company and
they said no, since I'm sure they would rather that I drop money in
the Net cafe rather than using my device's battery. Second, when in
the United States territories, is it possible to opt out of the ship's
wireless network and use my ATT data plan? I will be traveling from
Galveston, TX to Key West, Florida, for the first leg of the trip.
Then I go out of the country to the Bahamas. Since we won't get to
Florida unil day 3 of the trip, I was hoping that I could use my data
plan to stream some football games on Sunday instead of paying the
ship fees. I suppose what I'm asking is if the area from Texas to
Florida is covered in the ATT network? I don't imagine myself doing a
lot of streaming, but just looking for another option besides the
ship's costly network. Finally, my soon to be wife will be adopting my
old iPhone 4. Since I have moved my ATT service from the 4 to the 5,
the iPhone 4 isn't connected to a network. However, it still has the
voice memos app and the camera apps for capturing those special
moments. Might it be possible for us to use the old iPhone in order to
take pictures and make some recordings of our time on the cruise? The
only online connectivity I could imagine would be to backup the photos
to iCloud, but we won't be able to do that until we get back home to
Texas anyway. Any thoughts on any of this would be most appreciated.

Re: Using older and current iPhones on a cruise

2012-11-04 Thread Christopher Chaltain
Sorry if I'm missing your question, but turning on airplane mode turns
off wifi and cellular, so you don't need to turn them off if you turn on
airplane mode. Airplane mode basically turns off all of your phone's
radios, so it'll also turn off bluetooth and your GPS. I was traveling
internationally recently, and I turned on airplane mode and then turned
back on my wifi and location services. I still wanted to use my iPhone,
but I didn't want to pay any international roaming charges.

 Hi Wayne,

Yes, absolutely you can put your iPhone into airplane mode and use it
like an iPod or an iPod touch. Just because you're not using the
internet or cellular features of the phone doesn't mean that any other
functionality (i.e. iBooks, taking pictures, and playing saved
recordings) won't work: it absolutely will. This applies to your
wife's iPhone 4 too. You don't even need to have a SIM card in there
(although every time you reset it to factory defaults, you'll need to
activate it with a compatible SIM card, after which you can take it
out). When you're in airplane mode, all the radios are turned off but
you can enable WIFI and Bluetooth at any time.

Secondly, I have no idea about ATT's coverage or what they consider
roaming. But yes, absolutely you can choose whether to use WIFI,
cellular data, or neither. In fact, the iPhone won't even try to
connect to a WIFI network unless you explicitly give your permission,
either by selecting a network from a popup that appears (if ask to
join networks is set to ON under settings/WIFI) or by going into
settings/wifi and selecting a network manually. Once you establish a
connection to a WIFI network you can head into settings/WIFI and turn
off the wireless radio at any time. On the same page you can navigate
to the name of the cruise ship's network, flick right once and
double-tap on the more info option, and choose forget this network
to make the phone stop connecting to the network.

 Hope that helps,

 Grant

2012-11-04 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Reggie,

Turning on airplane mode automatically turns off Bluetooth, WiFi and
cellular. In airplane mode your iPhone is basically an iPod Touch, and you
can do anything you want that doesn't require a data or WiFi connection. You
can consume any media that is stored on your phone, music, audio books,
eBooks, movies etc. You can play games, record voice memos, type text notes
and use any app, just as long as the app doesn't depend on having a data
connection to work.

Sieghard

Well, of course you can use your phone in air plane mode. Are you asking
if there's a way to access the wifi on the cruise ship, i.e. going into
airplane mode but turning on wifi? I don't know, but I'd look into
seeing if the cruise ship offers wifi. It may not be free though. Maybe
you can check on their web site.

I went on a cruise a few years ago out of Galveston, and I had no cell
service. We went from Galveston to Cozumel.
