Have you checked to verify in your settings that your deice is not set to
lock automatically after a certain number of minutes? You can find this in
Settings, then General. Scroll down till you hear auto lock or device auto
lock. I'm not entirely awake right now and my phone is in the other room as
I type this...
Good luck though and let me know how it goes.

Hi Loreal,

Well, overall, I'm doing okay. My biggest problem is the screen locking as
I try to hear a notification. This wasn't a problem until IOS6 came out.
Thanks for the offer.

I reboot my phone, Daniel returns. This is my default because it is a
British phone. But I use Samantha as a matter of course. What do I
need to do to keep Samantha permanently? It will get irritating

you think it will resolve itself once I have the HQ voice back? It's
been two days and I still haven't got it though. Thanks

Hi Sieghard.
I followed your instructions, but after I pressed the first language button,

Hi Sieghard, Thanks for that info. I have changed those settings and when I
did it the phone went quiet and wouldn't do anything for a bit and then
British English came back on. I changed it in the rotor back to US and hope
it will stay that way. Though it still seems to indicate that my default is
British English even though I have said just English like you said. I guess
it doesn't take much effort to change it if it changes itsself back since
it's in my rotor, just it never did that before so it's slightly irritating.

 Hi Kirsten,

You can change the voice under Internationals and keep the date format
you prefer. In International you can change the following settings
 independently from each other:

Language: this is the default language used by Voiceover Voice
Control: this is the language you set for SIRI or stand-along voice
 dialing
Keyboards: here you can select multiple keyboards and order them in
the same way you can order the voices in the language rotor. I just
use the main English keyboard and the Emoji keyboard to have easy
access to emoticons. By the way, just noticed you can delete items
here by flicking down, i.e. the new actions rotor works here.
Region Format: Here you can select your country and this determines
how your date and time is formatted/displayed. If you change this and
then flick past the Calendar setting you find a region Format
Example which displays how the date, time and phone numbers are
 formatted.

I am in Canada, so I have the voice set to just English which means I
use the Samantha HQ voice, I have SIRI set to English Canada and the
region format also to Canada although I think that is pretty much the same
 as US.
However, if you are in England and want to use Samantha I don't see
why you can't select English as the language instead of British
English, then set SIRI to English UK to make she understands your limy
accent *smile* and the region format to United Kingdom.

 Hope that helps,
 Sieghard

RE: VO in iOS six question

2012-09-23 Thread Rick Alfaro
Les,

I have no solution to this. Just letting you know that you are not alone
with this issue. The only way around it as far as I can tell is to bite the
bullet and unlock the screen and pull down the notification center. I wish
that wasn't the case but the screen locks way too quickly, not giving one a
chance to review new notifications.

Best,

Rick

I am in Canada, so I have the voice set to just English which means I

However, if you are in England and want to use Samantha I don't see

Hi Sieghard, Thanks for that info. I have changed those settings and when I
did it the phone went quiet and wouldn't do anything for a bit and then
British English came back on. I changed it in the rotor back to US and hope
it will stay that way. Though it still seems to indicate that my default is

it doesn't take much effort to change it if it changes itsself back since

Re: VO in iOS six question

2012-09-22 Thread Cheryl Homiak
In settings, double tap general. In general, double tap accessibility which
will be almost at the end. In accessibility, double tap voiceover. The compact
voice button should be right before the braille button and right after use
pitch change.

RE: VO in iOS six question

2012-09-22 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Stan,

You can reorder the languages in the language rotor. Here are the steps
(these also apply to reordering Favourites in the Phone app and in some
other areas I can't think of right now):

Go to the Language rotor. I will use the example of US English and British
English.

You have the list of languages down the left side and to the right of each
language is a button which Voiceover announces as Reorder US English
Button, Dragable or British English button, Dragable.

Also, those languages that are selected to appear in the language rotor will
say Selected, e.g. Selected, US English or Selected, British English.
If any are selected you don't want or if there are some you want that are
not selected, just double tap on the language on the left side and it will
be selected or deselected.

Now, in order to put US English at the top of the list, find it in the list
on the left, then flick right to the Reorder US English button. If you
have Speak Hints enabled in the main Voiceover settings (it's the first
item after Practice Area) Voiceover will say the following after you flick
to the Reorder button:

Double tap and hold, wait for the sound, then drag to rearrange

So, once you are on the reorder button, double tap and hold it until you
hear the TriTone just as you would do to move an app or remove an app from
the app switcher. After the tone sounds just drag your finger straight up on
the screen without lifting it first.

Each time you drag a language above the one before it in the list you hear a
short metallic sounding ping and Voiceover will announce Moved above and
the name of the language. For example, let's assume you have British
English at the very top of the list, then you have Australian English and
then US English (I am using the English languages as examples, keep in mind
that any other languages like French, German, Dutch etc. will be spoken in
their language, so German is spoken not as German but as Deutsch.

In my example you want to drag US English first above Australian English and
then above British English.

1. Double tap and hold on the Reorder US English Button and wait for the
tone
2. Drag your finger straight up slowly and by just a small distance.
3. You will hear a ping and Voiceover will say Moved above Australian
English.
4. Drag on a bit further and you hear Moved above British English.

Once you reach the top you can continue dragging and nothing happens, no
more pings, no more announcements since you can't go any further.

Now you can exit Settings and if you turn to the language rotor the
languages will now appear in the order you set, your default language is
always first and then the rest. Please note, this will not make whichever
language you put at the top your default language, this you have to change
in Settings, International.

Regards,
Sieghard

Re: VO in iOS six question

2012-09-22 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Thanks Sieghard, I wasn't quite sure how reordering worked and this explains it
brilliantly and thoroughly! It won't solve my default issue though, as I don't
want to change the international settings and change the date etc. I have
reported it to Apple though and maybe they will do something about it. It was
never a problem in five, so I don't know what they've done to make voice-over
start in your default language on start-up now. :(
As for the difference between high-quality and compact, I am getting used to
the change of pitch, I couldn't notice the difference between HQ and compact
though I have had them off and on invariably, I quite like the fact that when
you delete a letter it is at a lower pitch and when you insert one it's at a
higher pitch, I don't know if this is new to iOS six or the voice was never
differentiated enough before but I never noticed it before.

Hi Stan,
I think this means that your HQ voice hasn't yet downloaded. Plug it into
power, with Wi-Fi on and the screen locked for a bit and then it should
download your HQ. Then you will see that setting in your settings, but
personally, I can't tell a difference yet.

RE: VO in iOS six question

2012-09-22 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Kirsten,

You can change the voice under Internationals and keep the date format you
prefer. In International you can change the following settings independently
from each other:

Language: this is the default language used by Voiceover
Voice Control: this is the language you set for SIRI or stand-along voice
dialing
Keyboards: here you can select multiple keyboards and order them in the same
way you can order the voices in the language rotor. I just use the main
English keyboard and the Emoji keyboard to have easy access to emoticons. By
the way, just noticed you can delete items here by flicking down, i.e. the
new actions rotor works here.
Region Format: Here you can select your country and this determines how your
date and time is formatted/displayed. If you change this and then flick past
the Calendar setting you find a region Format Example which displays how
the date, time and phone numbers are formatted.

I am in Canada, so I have the voice set to just English which means I use
the Samantha HQ voice, I have SIRI set to English Canada and the region
format also to Canada although I think that is pretty much the same as US.
However, if you are in England and want to use Samantha I don't see why you
can't select English as the language instead of British English, then set
SIRI to English UK to make she understands your limy accent *smile* and the
region format to United Kingdom.

Hope that helps,
Sieghard

Thanks Sieghard, I wasn't quite sure how reordering worked and this explains
it brilliantly and thoroughly! It won't solve my default issue though, as I
don't want to change the international settings and change the date etc. I
have reported it to Apple though and maybe they will do something about
it. It was never a problem in five, so I don't know what they've done to
make voice-over start in your default language on start-up now. :( As for
the difference between high-quality and compact, I am getting used to the
change of pitch, I couldn't notice the difference between HQ and compact
though I have had them off and on invariably, I quite like the fact that
when you delete a letter it is at a lower pitch and when you insert one it's
at a higher pitch, I don't know if this is new to iOS six or the voice was
never differentiated enough before but I never noticed it before.

 Hi Stan,

You can reorder the languages in the language rotor. Here are the
steps (these also apply to reordering Favourites in the Phone app and
in some other areas I can't think of right now):

Go to the Language rotor. I will use the example of US English and
 British English.

You have the list of languages down the left side and to the right of
each language is a button which Voiceover announces as Reorder US
English Button, Dragable or British English button, Dragable.

Also, those languages that are selected to appear in the language
rotor will say Selected, e.g. Selected, US English or Selected,
British English.
If any are selected you don't want or if there are some you want that
are not selected, just double tap on the language on the left side and
it will be selected or deselected.

Now, in order to put US English at the top of the list, find it in the
list on the left, then flick right to the Reorder US English button.
If you have Speak Hints enabled in the main Voiceover settings (it's
the first item after Practice Area) Voiceover will say the following
after you flick to the Reorder button:

Double tap and hold, wait for the sound, then drag to rearrange

So, once you are on the reorder button, double tap and hold it until
you hear the TriTone just as you would do to move an app or remove an
app from the app switcher. After the tone sounds just drag your finger
straight up on the screen without lifting it first.

Each time you drag a language above the one before it in the list you
hear a short metallic sounding ping and Voiceover will announce Moved
above and the name of the language. For example, let's assume you
have British English at the very top of the list, then you have
Australian English and then US English (I am using the English
languages as examples, keep in mind that any other languages like
French, German, Dutch etc. will be spoken in their language, so German is
spoken not as German but as Deutsch.

In my example you want to drag US English first above Australian
English and then above British English.

 1. Double tap and hold on the Reorder US English Button and wait for
 the tone
 2. Drag your finger straight up slowly and by just a small distance.
 3. You will hear a ping and Voiceover will say Moved

Re: VO in iOS six question

2012-09-21 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hello,

You can change the default language by going to Settings/General/International,
double-tapping Region Format, and then double-tapping the region you want. This
will change date format and possibly some other settings, but it will also
change the default voice. This works in iOS 5 as well.

Best,
Anna
