Re: possible LOC shutdown

2013-10-02 Thread Alan Paganelli
When Bard went down yesterday, I had 3 books cued for download. One book
was in progress and that download finished. The other two never started.
My Bard app is showing them as cued for download.

Hi, I think you are confusing downloading and reading what's already
there. With the BARD app you can read what is already downloaded just as
if you had copied the books onto an SD card and used a BookSense or Victor
Stream. Now, due to the shut down, getting new material is what is
prevented. Apples and Oranges here. This is because when the books are
downloaded to the BARD app, they are living in your device, not in the
cloud. You are listening to content already present, not being streamed. I
hope that helps.

All the books I've downloaded using the bard app still play fine. Any books
obtained through other means probably aren't going to work. I have 2 audio
books still cued for download. Braille books synced via the bard app I'm
told aren't playing.

This is what I thought as well, but people are reporting that books
they've moved over to their iPhone, using iTunes or some other file
sharing system, won't play in BARD at the moment. It seems that if you
download the book in BARD, which you can't do right now, then it's
authorized to be played in BARD, but if you get it there some other way,
BARD needs to check your authorization before it'll allow you to play it.
I haven't tested this myself yet, but this is what's been reported by
others.

Hi,
Late yesterday, I got an E-mail from the Tennessee Library for the Blind and

NLS operations would be suspended and the BARD site would become unavailable
as of 12:00pm, Eastern Time, today. So, the site is up, but not for long.
Thanks,

Hi Alia,

With all due respect, and I'm not trying to defend Mich's statements, but
the fact is, if you're discussing the Bard app, then discuss the Bard app.

From what I've seen, this thread has gone from the site shutting down, to
the state of your federal government to the state of people's views on said
government.

This is an iPhone list, not a general discussion list, so if you're going to
talk about the Bard app, then do so, but don't start off a new thread to
discuss the LOC or NLS and decide that simply because there's a Bard app
that this sort of discussion makes it on-topic for the list.

I'm sorry, but this isn't solely an American list, and yes, the delete key
has been working overtime, but why should I have to go through batteries on
my wireless keyboard simply because people are getting overzealous about the
government shut down?

Like I said, we may care about our American friends, but we don't care about
their daily lives, especially when it pertains to politics, as that is just
one huge powder keg.

Re: possible LOC shutdown

2013-10-01 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I've seen questions on list from Canadians asking about weather apps
that work in Canada and from UK members about SIM cards for their
carriers and so on. I don't think we should restrict the list to just
those topics that pertain to absolutely everyone.

There were only a few messages on strictly political issues, and the
list owner already asked those to be discontinued, so I think that's
it's own issue that's already been addressed.

Quite a few of the questions revolved around whether we'd still be able
to download, transfer and listen to books with the BARD app after the
government shutdown, so I think they're also on topic for the list.

I am sure there were some messages that talked strictly about whether
there was going to be a shutdown or not, and I'd agree those messages
were technically off topic, but I for one like how the list is
moderated. Too much moderation can be just as detrimental to a list as
not enough.

Re: possible LOC shutdown

2013-10-01 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hi, I think you are confusing downloading and reading what's already
there. With the BARD app you can read what is already downloaded just as
if you had copied the books onto an SD card and used a BookSense or
Victor Stream. Now, due to the shut down, getting new material is what
is prevented. Apples and Oranges here. This is because when the books
are downloaded to the BARD app, they are living in your device, not in
the cloud. You are listening to content already present, not being
streamed. I hope that helps.

Re: possible LOC shutdown

2013-10-01 Thread Christopher Chaltain
This is what I thought as well, but people are reporting that books
they've moved over to their iPhone, using iTunes or some other file
sharing system, won't play in BARD at the moment. It seems that if you
download the book in BARD, which you can't do right now, then it's
authorized to be played in BARD, but if you get it there some other way,
BARD needs to check your authorization before it'll allow you to play
it. I haven't tested this myself yet, but this is what's been reported
by others.
