RE: Nearby Explorer, Goodmaps, and GPS in General
Here is the text from a GoodMaps Outdoors press release from today: GoodMaps is excited to announce the release of GoodMaps Outdoors v5. This new version boasts the incorporation of 3D audio announcements, improved accuracy, and the inclusion of navigational shortcuts. “It’s exciting to see a much-appreciated feature of Soundscape incorporated into GoodMaps Outdoors, becoming a further milestone in its evolution. I hope sponsors will enable even more features to be added to this powerful outdoor navigation application in the future.” – Mike May, Sendero founder * When Microsoft Research announced it was sunsetting its Soundscape suite, users asked if it would be possible to incorporate similar functionality into GoodMaps Outdoors – which is why GoodMaps is delighted to announce the first version of an all-new feature. * GoodMaps Outdoors’ integrated speech shortcut is as simple (and as powerful) as saying: “Create a route using GoodMaps Outdoors”. * The latest version also features its most accurate positioning ever (in both iOS and Android apps), improving its ability to pinpoint addresses and points of interest considerably. “It is wonderful to see the cumulation of 20+ years of development, understanding, and feedback come to fruition and help provide independence for so many people.” – Neil Barnfather, GoodMaps CCO For more information, visit: <https://goodmaps.com/apps/good-maps-outdoors> goodmaps.com/apps/good-maps-outdoors Richard, USA. “Reality is the leading cause of stress for those who are in touch with it.” -- Jane Wagner from The Search for Intelligent Life in the Universe My web site: <https://www.turner42.com> https://www.turner42.com From: viphone@googlegroups.com On Behalf Of Richard Turner Sent: Wednesday, June 28, 2023 10:07 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: Nearby Explorer, Goodmaps, and GPS in General GoodMaps is what used to be Sendero GPS, or Seeing Eye GPS as it became known. RE: Is Lazarillo Same As GoodMaps?
No, Lazarillo and Good Maps are not the same. Neither one has been discontinued. GoodMaps Outdoors bought Seeing Eye GPS, so Seeing Eye GPS is no more, it is now GoodMaps Outdoors. The user guide and a walk through are available at: GoodMaps Outdoors | Goodmaps<https://www.goodmaps.com/apps/good-maps-outdoors> Lazarillo will provide GPS turn by turn directions for walking routes. But will have to use something like Google Maps or Apple Maps if a person wants turn by turn directions for a vehicle. They are both free. RE: GoodMaps outdoors not speaking location as it changes
>From the User Guide: Automatic LookAround modeThe Automatic LookAroundmode is on by default and works if you are moving or stationary. It searchesin all directions every 15 seconds or in your choice of several intervals up to 60 seconds, and it reportsthe nearest POI or intersection to you. In a dense area, it doesn't have to look very far. You can of coursesearch for all points of interest manually and can expand the search if nothing nearby is found. In addition to the nearest POI and intersection announcements, you will also get automaticannouncements to let you know whenyou have changed heading direction or changed streets if youhave set your speed in LookAround settings to under 5MPH.LookAround WandWhen standing still, the LookAround Wand allows you to find out a sampling of what is in the directionyou pointthe phone. For example, if you want to know what is to the right, point your phone to theright and the intersection and a sampling of points of interest will be announced. The LookAroundWand button is in the top right of the screen. You can toggle it off and on. When theLookAround Wand is turned on, you will hear a rising chime, the button will light up, andVoiceoverwillconfirm that the LookAround Wand is on. When the LookAround Wand is turned off, you will hear adescending chime, the button will turn gray andVoiceoverwill confirm that the LookAround Wand isoff. Remember that if you are moving and turn it on, no information will be given until you stop movingfor 15 seconds or so. Also if you switch screens, the LookAround wand will automatically turn off. RE: Understanding the GoodMaps Arrangements
There was a time some years ago when I seriously thought about buying Seeing AI XT which I believe in Canadian currency was something like $300. Even before then I did subscribe to it for a year or so, but in my small town where I live I rarely need an app and then Apple Maps and Google Maps became better and better and combined with the GoodMaps Explore app I found were very adequate. Needless to say I am glad I didn't buy it since it is another example where a previously paid app now is free although I have also bought apps which I ended up using a ton before they became free for some reason and I don't regret the purchase because if I spend money on something which really helps me then to me that was money well spent even if at some point I could have gotten it for free. Sort of like buying your groceries and enjoying a good meal and then a few days later you go back and realize something you bought is now on sale… well, so what. RE: Understanding the GoodMaps Arrangements
Here is an email I received this morning about this: GoodMaps acquires the Sendero GPS mobile apps from Aira, which are now free! Ever wonder what became of the Sendero GPS subscription apps, Seeing Eye GPS, RNIB Navigator, and Guide Dogs NSW? There is one word to describe them now: free, free, free! Fwd: GoodMaps is here to bring holiday cheer!
The Blind Tech Guys will be doing a demo of this, potentially on an upcoming midweek podcast, so stay tuned. -- Forwarded message - From: GoodMaps Date: Wed, Dec 23, 2020 at 12:36 PM Subject: GoodMaps is here to bring holiday cheer! To: [image: GoodMaps, Maps with a Mission] Happy Holidays to our Android users. We have an early present for you GoodMaps is proud to announce the release of GoodMaps Explore on Android. GoodMaps Explore is an accessible wayfinding app designed primarily for people who are blind or visually impaired, which sets a new standard for indoor navigation across the globe. GoodMaps Explore uses audio instructions to communicate routing and critical spatial information as users move through a space, whether indoors or outdoors, drawing upon GoodMaps’ state-of-the-art digital maps. In doing so, GoodMaps has solved four problems that have frustrated the field for several decades by: 1. Delivering superior positioning accuracy with minimal infrastructure, 2. Dramatically speeding the process to digitally map a building, which provides the foundation for the app, 3. Creating a way for building owners to securely control their mapping data, 4. Providing the public with a complete package of maps with an app to actually use them. Download Explore now <https://goodmaps.us17.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1ca2f963820c90eb230c58e1b=a55fa3d1b8=c0cbe7c853> [image: Android Phone with GoodMaps Explore virtual mode screenshot] Hear from our Users Warren Carr, Android Beta Tester "When I am able to hear what streets I am crossing, the independence I get from that as a blind person, is the fact that it makes me know more about the streets in my city, thus, knowing what street is where, and how to get there. Besides, becoming available on Android, means that the many blind people like me who are on Android, can now benefit from the app that a few months ago, they could only wish for." Taylor Cox, a student “Using GoodMaps Explore for the first time was so crazy. I walked around my neighborhood and I notice things that my mom and dad didn't notice. I saw the street names that I was walking on and I knew which Cardinal direction I was facing. It was really an amazing eye opener for me.” Bob Sweetman, a blind professional "Virtual exploration is awesome! For example, I was able to look around the American Printing House for the Blind building and understand how it is laid out and get directions to different points inside the building. I think the aspect of having indoor and outdoor navigation is going to be fantastic." Jamie Murdy, a teacher of the visually impaired "Overall I have found it to be intuitive and easy to use. As Taylor mentioned, she could pick it up and get immediate information from her environment without a lot of training. Most of my students, and any kid in general, is good at their phone. So, it's nice that it's on a platform that they are used and able to use. A few days ago, I had one of my middle school students, and I said, “OK your homework is to download this app and explore it and tomorrow I am going to ask you what you learned about your neighborhood.” I didn't tell her how to use the app at all. The next day, I said “OK tell me what you learned.” Her first response was, “It was very easy to use, there's tutorials for each time you go to a new section of the app it tells you how to use it.” Then she started telling me all about her neighborhood. She told me street names that she didn't know and that there is a bus stop a half a mile from her house.” We don't need to be experts with the technology, for us it's helping our students learn how to interpret the information the GPS is giving them and apply it to their environment. and being able to generalize skills to travel independently. Explore is another tool that we can add to our toolbox. The more we provide our students, the better off they are going to be as far as their independence in building mental maps. Features - *Location Aware* - On-demand and automatic updates about your immediate surroundings. - *Favorites* - Save any Point of Interest (POI) and, outdoors, create your own favorited POIs. - *Indoor Routing* - Accurate indoor routing for independent travel (supported buildings only). - *Lookaround* - Direction-based discovery at your fingertips. - *Virtual Mode* – Preview and plan before you go. - *Easy, Accessible Tutorials* - Get started quickly with in-app help. - *Search* for POIs indoors or outdoors. - *Locate* nearby intersections. - *Integration with Be My Eyes* to provide live visual assistance. FW: GoodMaps Explore update
GoodMaps Explore, 11/05/2020, Create new POIs so you can easily remember where that crack in the sidewalk is or your favorite store that doesn't appear in with Foursquare or Apple Maps POIs. POIs that you create appear on the Favorites Tab and work like other POIs; you can navigate to them, hear them announced if they are nearby, set them as a Getting Warmer POI, and find them when using Lookaround. Want to open another app and still get Location notifications? Now you can! While Explore is in the background or while your phone is locked, you can hear updates about your direction, nearest address, upcoming intersection, nearby POIs, and Getting Warmer POI. Customize how often you hear Location information on the Configuration page. Set the frequency of notifications for direction, nearest address, nearby POIs, and Getting Warmer POI. Options include 10 seconds, 30 seconds, 60 seconds, 120 seconds, and never. Points of interest from Apple Maps are here! You can choose between Foursquare and Apple Maps as the source of POI information. Switch from Foursquare to Apple Maps on the Configuration page. Available for iOS 14 and newer. Add a Getting Warmer POI to your Location information to get updates on how far away you are from that POI. The Getting Warmer POI is indicated with a tone and haptic. Worried about losing favorites or configuration options? When you delete Explore or switch devices, your data is automatically saved. No need to re-add favorite POIs or customize your configuration options. The formula for announcing nearby POIs has been adjusted to improve how POIs are announced when stationary and when moving. Those interested in good maps and Canada would like to know that CNIB is partnering with Goodmaps
GoodMaps partners with CNIB Foundation TORONTO – GoodMaps, experts and innovators in accessible navigation and wayfinding, partners with the CNIB Foundation, Canada’s largest non-profit serving people with sight loss. GoodMaps Explore, which was unveiled earlier this month, is an accessible wayfinding app designed primarily for people who are blind or partially sighted. Drawing upon GoodMaps’ state-of-the-art digital maps, the app uses audio instructions to communicate routing and critical spatial information as users move through indoor or outdoor environments. “From the moment we began conversations with CNIB, it was clear that we shared a vision for drastically increasing the footprint of accessible buildings and overcoming the historical hurdles of accessible navigation,” says Jose Gaztambide, Founder and CEO of GoodMaps. “CNIB believes, as we do, in leveraging the latest technology to offer an extraordinary navigation and wayfinding experience for clients.” In the past, indoor navigation for people with sight loss has often been imprecise and has typically relied on expensive, burdensome infrastructure. But GoodMaps Explore starts with laser mapping of the environment, then draws upon camera-based positioning (CPS), a breakthrough technology that utilizes sensors in a device’s camera to achieve superior accuracy with minimal hardware. “We are absolutely thrilled to be partnering with GoodMaps,” says Shane Silver, Vice President of Social Enterprises for the CNIB Foundation. “This innovation represents a significant breakthrough in accessible indoor navigation and accuracy. The introduction of GoodMaps across the country will help ensure that Canadians with sight loss have greater access to more buildings and venues than ever before.” About CNIB The CNIB Foundation is a non-profit organization driven to change what it is to be blind today. We deliver innovative programs and powerful advocacy that empower Canadians impacted by blindness to live their dreams while tearing down barriers to inclusion. Our work as a blind foundation is powered by a network of volunteers, donors and partners in communities across Canada. To learn more or get involved, visit cnib.ca. RE: Please explore a wonderful gift by APH, GoodMaps Explore
That is nothing new, many apps came out as paid apps and later dropped in price or went free altogether because somehow the developer found a different way to make money and I assume this will always be happening. It's no different from buying a product you like only to find it elsewhere for cheaper or to see it go on sale a week later. I believe that the paid version of Near by Explorer is already frozen. The free version of the app is called "Near By Explorer Online" and it is being updated currently. I do not know what may happen to it given this new app. Dave Clement Winnipeg MB On Sep 15, 2020, at 10:12 AM, kitty hevener wrote: Amny, my understanding from them is that nearby explorer will be free to everyone from now on. Hi Amy, Like you, I Purchased Nearby Explorer. I was rather surprised and disappointed to learn that there was an update they could not be downloaded from the App Store. I believe it is a PH is intention to only work on this app. That’s unfortunate, because a number of us did buy that product and we can’t even get the latest update for it. Setting a new Standard across the globe, does not at all indicate that this company will make it available across the globe. we can use the analogy of Americans with disability act. if that is true, they need to learn how to write accurate bragging statements in the first paragraph. They say, which sets a new standard for indoor navigation across the globe. That implies to me they plan on it being available everywhere. Malcolm, I’d suggest writing them and asking when it may be in the UK. It says something about around the world, so it could be just the first release like some other apps have done is only available here in the US. I would hope this would change so apps are more widely available from the start… Richard "He that cannot forgive others breaks the bridge over which he must pass himself,” and we forget that only grace can break the cycle of ancient hatreds among peoples. RE: Please explore a wonderful gift by APH, GoodMaps Explore
Note, when it loads onto your iPhone, it will be called Explore, not Good Maps or even Good Maps Explore. If you want to send feedback or ask questions, the support address is supp...@goodmaps.com<mailto:supp...@goodmaps.com> Their phone is: (502) 845-3113 I found 2 out of date Points Of Interest within two blocks of my house in the first 15 minutes of using the Look Around tab. I sent them that information. You can search for an address or POI from the location screen. You can use a “getting warmer” method, or get directions using Google Maps or Apple Maps launched from within the app. For a first release, this looks quite impressive. One more note, One of the out of date POI locations is a restaurant that has been out of business for at least 3 years, so I searched for the name of the new restaurant that went in about 6 months after the other one closed and found it easily. So, it is in their data base, they just have to update the info spoken in the Look Around tab.
