Re: Reading .brf Files With the iPhone

2015-06-03 Thread Teresa Cochran
Both Braille input and output have three modes starting with iOS 8. There's
contracted, uncontracted, and eight-dot. With a .brf file, you should use
8-dot, since these files are all upper-case.

With your "capitalization" example, it looks like you're using Unified English
Braille. If you want US grade 2, you can set this in Accessibeality, Voiceover,
Braille. Unified English Braille will be used increasingly in the US and
Canada, and has different rules.

Re: Reading .brf Files With the iPhone

2015-06-03 Thread Keith B.
So I made sure my display was in un-contracted, 8-dot mode and loaded one
file in several programs, including Bard. But it didn't look like good
Braille. For example, it contained words followed by definitions. So here
is how it would look.

optical3 having to do with the eyes or vision4

I also noticed that it had the word capitalization in it, which looked like
the word capitaliz followed by a letter sign, capital sign, n.

Any ideas as to what may be going on? Thanks for any suggestions.

Yes it would be neat if an app could do this.

Is there a lot in BRF that isn't available in other formats we can

the way to read contracted braille is, wait for it, on a Braille

I'm also not sure why reading uncontracted braille is impossible.

that brf format is for those who wish to read braille. Recorded format is for

Re: Reading brf files

2015-04-13 Thread Brett
Does ILike2Read read brf files with speech? I haven't used it for ages and
don't have it on my phone these days. I can't remember if I could use speech or
if I had to use my braille display.

Perhaps have a look at its description in the app store.

Cheers,
Brett.

Re: Reading brf files

I'm not sure I understand. I'd never say never, since I don't know why a
translator couldn't be written to convert grade 2 braille into English.
I'm also not sure why reading uncontracted braille is impossible.

Re: reading .brf files on the iphone

You won't be able to read brf files with speech on iOS, even with the bard app.
You'd have to turn off speech and read with a display.

You will need a Braille display to read these files on your device. If you're
in the US, Bard Mobile works great. It has very specific keystrokes to use for
finding your place in a book and navigating, so using the manual is highly
recommended. I know there are other apps that will do this, but I haven't used

If you search the list archive, we had a recent thread on this topic.
Basically, the upshot is that you can convert the files to pdf or epub and read
them with a Braille display only. No speech.

A brf file is actually a plain ASCII text file with normal characters that
represent Braille. There is no special computer formatting for a brf file.
Therefore, this same text is rendered accurately when it's placed into an
epub file.

You can use Stanza to convert files to epub. You can also use TextEdit to
export the files to pdf format.

Again, the text, completely translated into Grade Two as originally
produced by NLS, is rendered perfectly. It looks perfect on a Braille
display, but since the characters represent Braille, it will be spoken as
gibberish if you use speech.

I hope this helps. :)

Yes, or use iTunes to place the file into iBooks. You can also change the
extension from .brf to .txt and open the file with one of the several text
editor apps such as documents2 from Savvy Soda.

Yes, Keith, that is correct. It's also possible to use ITunes to sync the
files, if you place them in the Itunes Books folder and then add them to your

Thanks for all the info. Is this, then a correct summation?

One could download a web braille file or any other file in brf format,
use a program such as Stanza to convert to epub, and then put in the
Dropbox to upload to the iPhone. Then the file could be read in
braille with contractions off, but speech would be pointless.

Accurate?

Yes, you are correct. The only way to read them without a Braille
display is by using an application which has a back translator like
Kurzweil on the PC or Louis for the Mac.

No, Stanza is not in the app store. It's a little elusive, and sometimes
download links are broken, but CNet seems to be the most reliable one. Amazon
used to own Stanza, but it seems to be kind of free-floating these days:

It will only work on a Braille display. Speech will make gibberish out of it.

A brf file is actually a plain ASCII text file with normal characters that
represent Braille. There is no special computer formatting for a brf file.
Therefore, this same text is rendered accurately when it's placed into an

You can use Stanza to convert files to epub. You can also use TextEdit to

Again, the text, completely translated into Grade Two as originally produced

Looking at the following brf file in it's raw form, it's not very readible!
   ,,BOOK ,,JACKET ,,9=M,N
  ,A TOP -PUT] GAME CR1TOR IS MISS+--

 ,,ALL ,,NEW6
 ,,F/ ,,"T ,,PUBLI%$

It seems as if not all epub are created equally. When I used Stanza to
create a epub, it would not work on my victor reader stream.

Re: Reading .brf Files On The iPhone

2013-01-18 Thread Teresa Cochran
Hi, Mary,

IOS has a built[in translator to convert text into Grade Two Braille. As an
aside, it does not have a back-translation program to convert brf files into
Grade One.

A brf file is actually a plain ASCII text file with normal characters that
represent Braille. There is no special computer formatting for a brf file.
Therefore, this same text is rendered accurately when it's placed into an epub
file.

You can use Stanza to convert files to epub. You can also use TextEdit to
export the files to pdf format.

Again, the text, completely translated into Grade Two as originally produced by
NLS, is rendered perfectly. It looks perfect on a Braille display, but since
the characters represent Braille, it will be spoken as gibberish if you use
speech.

I hope this helps. :)

Re: Reading .brf Files On The iPhone

2013-01-18 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Teresa,
I'm confused. What I think you said is that it is possible to read brf files if
you first convert them to epub for importation into iBooks. How the heck do you
convert a brf file into an epub? And once you did that, then wouldn't it be
translated out of braille grade II into regular print in the epub form? So
you'd need a braille translator together with a program that converted the text
from the braille translator into epub? And then you would have to read that
file with grade II translation turned on. Clearly, I'm missing some big step
here.

Re: Reading .brf Files On The iPhone

2013-01-18 Thread Teresa Cochran
They're already in Grade 2 Braille when they're produced. This is why you turn
contractions off. You don't want to do a double-translation on the file. This
can be confusing, I know, but you only want translation on when you're dealing
with printed text. The Braille in WebBraille is, one might say,
"pre-translated".

With the new bard site, you'd need a zip file extractor first though, and a way
to open the BRF files. But if you use web braille, yes you can read the BRF

Yes, you can first convert them to epub or pdf format on your computer
and then read them in Ibooks. There are other ways to read them, but
most of those I've tried do not allow you to bookmark your place.
Ibooks will allow you to pick up where you left off.

Also, you can only read them on a display without speech, and you must
have contracted Braille off.
