I can't think what you'd want to do that for. I think you'd have to select by
word, delete that word, or whatever you wanted to do, then continue.

Do try it out!

  hi Gerry,

  This is what you do:

firstly, with the rotor, you go to edit and double tap edit. You then use the
rotor again and go to the left until you reach edit selection. you will hear
instructions this point. At this time, you select what you want to edit by and
you do this by flicking one finger down and you will see characters lines et
cetera. You then just start editing. to do this you then swipe left or right
right selects whatever you have decided upon and left deselects. after that, I
cannot describe it properly but you can press delete key on what you have
selected that should get you started and do experiment because you can't do
anything dangerous, as long as you don't mind if you do the wrong thing!

  Hope this helps.

A couple of days ago, when I upgraded my for S, I noted that I had a problem
when trying to dictate a comment on Facebook, which was that voiceover started
talking while I was still dictating. That resulted in trouble concentrating for
me and a garbled mess for my comment. I rebooted the phone and then dictated an
email message, which went fine. So I thought the problem was solved, or was
perhaps something to do with my for S being slow.
I have been using this 5S to dictate several email messages. I just tried
doing a Facebook comment, and, lo and behold, I got the unwanted intrusion a
voiceover dictating before I was through. Has anyone else noticed this problem
when dictating into something other than a mail message, where you hear back
what you were saying before you have double tapped to indicate you're done? Is
this a bug or is it just me?
I was using the Siri female voice when this latest intrusion happened. Now
I'm using Alex. I suppose I should try and email using the Siri female voice to
make sure that it isn't Alex that is doing a good job, and the bug that is
appearing elsewhere.

NEW EDITING FEATURE - LOVE IT!

2015-09-22 Thread 'carol.pearso...@googlemail.com' via VIPhone
I have to say that I love the new editing feature and, for this alone, it's
well worth the upgrade, if you can put up with the bugs so far mentioned ...

I must say, though, that it took me a while to realise that you expanded the
selection by words or lines (instead of letters) by flicking down. How I wish
I'd had a clue on that one!

Anyway, despite the time I wasted figuring it out ... I'm delighted!

Re: Ios9 no longer reports number of Messages in thread

2015-09-24 Thread 'carol.pearso...@googlemail.com' via VIPhone
I was using my 4S with 9.1 today and had threading on. (I don't veryh often
do this as I really just prefer to read and deal with ...)

When I reached the thread, I had to double tap on the first message to be
read. At that point I learned how many messages there were in the thread.
On examining the screen, somewhere near the top I could see Thread and then
3 of 5, or whatever it was. Not quite what we'd like to see, but maybe
that's always how it worked. Are those of you expecting to see the number
of messages in the thread before you double tap on it?

It appears from what was said by the person who is running iOS 9.1 Beta that
eventually this will be fixed. Remember that the official 9.0.1 release is
not the same as the 9.1 Beta and typically the first major update where
instead of 9.0.x it goes to 9.1.x does not come out until November. From
what you can read and hear online it sounds like the 9.1 release will be
somewhat tied to the availability of the new iPad Pro which will be some
time in November. Until then or until that feature is fixed in one of the
9.0.x updates you are out of luck.

I just installed iOS 9.01.I still have the same problem. When you have
a multiple message thread, it merely says, "multiple items." It used to
say the exact number of messages in the thread. Is there anyway to get this
behavior back?

Thanks, Sieghard. I knew there was something different about the 6, having

  Carol,

The phones are usually sufficiently charged to get going at least to where
it’s set up and where you can check the battery with Voiceover, but you can
always just plug it in when it arrives which, of course, will also turn it on
automatically and since there is a short double vibrate when the phone is
plugged in, it’s not a bad idea.

It has exactly the same buttons as all iPhones, e.g. volume up/down on the
left side, a mute switch above the volume up button, the home button and the
power button. Only difference is that the power button is no longer on the top
right of the phone, but it is now on the top right side across from the volume
buttons. SIM tray is still on the right side where it has always been and the
headphone jack is at the bottom to the left of the Lightning port, if you are
coming from a 4S this will be different since the 4S had the headphone jack on
the top.

MORE HELP, PLEASE!

2015-09-25 Thread 'carol.pearso...@googlemail.com' via VIPhone
Hi all,

Because of circumstances beyond my control and that I cannot use iTunes to set
up my new phone, I need to be clear about which option I should go for, bearing
in mind I could either set up as new or whatever the other option is,
presumably. I do have Cloud items backed up (with my other phone).

I would welcome advice now about which method I should choose and why and what,
in these circumstances, I'll get on my new phone at the end. For example, will
I get all my apps back and my purchased music and in which method would this
work, if either? Should I really go for the new phone option, because there
are details I need to give that don't show up anywhere else?

Thank you so much for all those kind helping offers recently. It's so much
appreciated and I hope this will be the last question for a while.

Carol,

Christopher already explained how the Lightning cable/plug looks, just plug
the regular USB end into the charger and an outlet, then plug the small end
into your iPhone on the bottom in the middle. The port is exactly where the
30 pin connector used to go in but it's of course a lot smaller and, as
Christopher said, the nice thing is that you can't plug it in wrong, it goes
either way.

If you're familiar with an older iPhone, like the 4S or earlier, then
the Lightning cable is analogous to the older cable which had a wide 30
pin connector on the end that plugged into the phone. On the iPhone 5
and newer iPhones, instead of a 30 pin connector you have a Lightning
connector which plugs into the phone. It's reversible, so you can plug
it in either way. It's also quite a bit smaller than the 30 pin
connector. It feels kind of like a mini USB connector.

Hello Carol. I have a 5S and it uses a lightning charger. The charger

two-pronged electrical plug. If I remember correctly, the cord and
cube both have wrapping material on them which should be removed. The
side of the cube directly opposite the prongs has a slot which you fit
the USB end of the cord into. Once you do that, plug the other end of
the cord into your phone and then plug the plug end into an electrical
outlet. If you prefer, you can also simply plug the USB end of the
cable into a usb port on your computer to charge your phone. Hope that
gets you past your difficulty. Enjoy your new phone.

I agree with John. If you cannot use an encrypted iTunes backup you're only
reasonable choice is the cloud, that is, unless you want to totally redo your
phone. Then you can start as new and only download those things that you want.
You would have to make all new folders.
  Mary
PS because you can't use the encrypted backup, all your saved network
passwords are going to be lost, so you will have to enter them all again. If
you have lots of networks that you connect with, that might be something of a
pain.

  Hi,

For anyone who has the need to measure things or distances this app works.
It works by starting the app then picking your phone up and moving it to the
distance you want measured. It works and seems fairly accessible.

Just thought some of you might be interested.

I completely agree with John. Go to Settings > Touch Id and Passcode, you
have to enter your passcode to get into this area. Then find the Add
Fingerprint button and just follow the instructions. If you set it up right
it will be much easier to unlock your phone using Touch Id, it is even
easier and faster than if you don't set up a passcode and just find and
double tap the u nlock button. If your phone is locked, you still have to
press the home or power button to wake it up, then find the unlock button
and double tap it. Once you set up your fingerprint and have a bit of
practice, you can do it all in one press of the home button. You press it
down briefly to wake up the phone, let go but lightly continue to rest your
finger on the button a second or a bit less and your phone will be unlocked.
Only time it may not work is if your finger is quite wet or if the button
might have gotten very dirty. Apple says that with the 6S and 6S Plus the
Touch Id sensor is new and it is supposed to be up to twice as fast. To me
this is hard to understand because even with my 5S it's almost
instantaneous.

Sieghard

no it doesn't. You may find that using the finger print is easier than the
pass code each time.

Hi,

is very annoying, and takes a little bit of time to enter the
passcode, and by the time you enter it, the call will be ended.

PS, if I want to disable the passcode, what I go into settings, and
touch ID, then do something from there?

will be taking a class soon where having the ability to type would be most

Do not understand at all how to braille on an iPhone screen, never have had

Re: Screen protector for your new iPhone with force touch or 3-D touch

2015-09-18 Thread 'carol.pearso...@googlemail.com' via VIPhone
Well, I'll be thinking about getting one. I found that sometimes, even
though I try always to have clean hands, I'd get bits of dirt/dust on the
screen which just got worse until I rubbed it gently away with an antistatic
cloth.

I therefore went back to using a screen protector with my 4S and found it
worthwhile.

Well, Sieghard, I think you do have a point. On my for S, I never had a
screen protector. When I got the five as, it was from the store, and the guy
talk to both me and my husband into getting one. In his case, it paid off,
as he cracked his screen protector, but his screen stayed in one piece.
Maybe I'll just do without, rather then go by habit.

I read an article about this just yesterday. On The Verge or MacWorld or
one of those site.
I can't recall the exact measurement of thickness outlined for
compatibility, but the jist was that most screen protectors already on the
market should work with the new S series. There were two other
requirements mentioned, and again, no problems were expected.
I'm sure someone can look up that specific article or information easy

Re: Inability to type with bluetooth keyboard in iOS9?

2015-09-18 Thread 'carol.pearso...@googlemail.com' via VIPhone
Hi Chris,

I decided to update my 4S, knowing the pitfalls, because I wanted to get in on
the "bugs" and try to force some kind of immediate, total effort on the
Accessability Team to fix these keyboard issues, and any others I find!

My Apple keyboard is behaving like yours, just not writing in edit boxes. I
did get it to write once when I turned off Voice-Over but, the second time I
tried, it didn't work again.

When I wrote to Accessability, I stressed that it's vital for some visually
impaired people to use a keyboard for all but short items, and some I know use
it all the time.

As the problems go back to iOS8 for keyboards and Voice-over, there's got to be
a solution found!

I just upgraded the iPad to iOS 9 and reinstalled the Russian voice. I also
installed the mail Siri enhanced voice. Experimenting around, it would seem
that both of these voices are speaking much more slowly than they should
based on the speech rate that is set invoice over interestingly enough,
under iOS 8 and I believe seven as well, the four invoices, such as the
Russian one, would speak at a much faster rate than the default would
warrant, based on the English speech. It seems like they've over corrected.
Now, if I want a decent Russian speech rate, I have to up the speed to more
than I would have for English, which is absurd, since I am far from a native

It's awesome! First seen in developer beta 1. The only caveat is, for now,
you cannot search beyond a certain level. So, for example, searching for
VoiceOver would be no problem, but searching for Braille just does not work
at this time.

tap the search result. This beats a lot of time going to general,
accessibility, and finding Voiceover that way. To find the search edit
box, find the settings heading and flick right once. Then double tap and
you can enter your search result.

I've just discovered that you can now view your iCloud drive in iOS 9 and can

It all appears to work for me, with a 4S and I was able to find a couple of
files that could be deleted. You do get a warning that deleting such files
will remove them from each item you use with iCloud. That is fine with me!

Incidentally, I didn't have room on my Home screen, so it very kindly put it on

This is another plus for me!

Just out of curiocity, why is it better to get dirt and such on the
screenprotector than on the glass itself? You still have to clean it off
eventually and youreally don't have to worry that much about doing anything
to the screen. I usually use the fluid and cloth of my LCD screen cleaning
kit, but if I happen to be in the kitchen and the screen gets some dirt or
grease on it, I just rub it with a damp dish cloth and then dry it with a
dish towel or paper towel. No cloth or towel you are likely to use will
scratch the screen of an iPhone and as long as whatever you use isn't
dripping water it's OK.

screen which just got worse until I rubbed it gently away with an antistatic

On The Verge or MacWorld
or one of those site.
I can't recall the exact measurement of thickness outlined for
compatibility, but the jist was that most screen protectors already on
the market should work with the new S series. There were two other
requirements mentioned, and again, no problems were expected.
I'm sure someone can look up that specific article or information easy
enough.

I haven't noticed that one yet with my 4S, but Siri is certainly slower in

I've also asked a couple of questions and, as before, she's just found

Oh, in addition, when I didn't dictate (having to stop just after I'd

Incidentally, I did the same as you, because I don't *have* to do everything

I have read that iOS 9 doesn't weigh in with the annoying double repetition
when you do dictation. I am all in favor of that.
I upgraded my for S to iOS 9. It's old and slow, so I figured if it went
down, it would not be a big loss. So I just tried dictating a comment into
the Facebook post I wanted to make using my for S. And Siri started reading
back to me what I was saying before I was through. Not only was this
disconcerting, it screwed up what got put into my note. Is there anyway to
shut that off? I want it to tell me what I said, but I want it to wait till
I'm through. Is this just a problem because I'm using an old phone that
barely made the cut for iOS 9? Or is this a new so-called feature? How many
people do you know who like to hear back what they're saying while they're
still saying it? That is a skill that interpreters half. I'm not an
interpreter. Smile.

Hello Arianna,

Based on your use of the Tab key, I am assuming that you are using iTunes
for Windows.

First, I suggest that you install the latest version of iTunes which is
12.3.

Second, I recommend that, before attaching your device, that you restart
both your computer and your iOS device.

Third, I can tell you that the device's list of apps are being displayed as
usual. That is, upon attaching your iOS device, and navigating to the apps
area as described in your original post, all of the apps in your iTunes
Library should be displayed.

Update:
This is even weirder. So, I go to the treeview and select apps. I tab, and
notice just before I get to the first app name, followed by the size, and
then by the remove button, that there's a table list view thing that I
hadn't noticed before. I'm thinking, hey, great! It's still there, and I
just missed it. To my complete surprise, it didn't list the app names at
all, just their size, and said either remove or install. I assume hitting
space on these will tell iTunes to install or remove the app? They weren't
checkboxes in the list, just lines, so I'm not sure. Anyhow, that's not
really the problem--well, it could be a problem, but I don't know yet--the
real problem is that I no longer know what app I'm on in the list.

Thanks,
Ari

and selected the "Apps" option. After that, I tabbed some, expecting
to find the list of apps, with each item being a checkbox that, if
checked, would tell iTunes to put the app on my iPhone, and if
unchecked, would tell iTunes to remove the app from my iPhone. This
behavior is no longer what happens. Instead, I get the app name, then
the app's size, then a remove button, and so on; This continues for a
while, but I can no longer see the entire list of apps in my iTunes
library this way. Eventually, things switch (if I tab far enough) to
showing me pages or something like that. I'm not all that sure of the
specifics, but I'm sure I started hearing stuff about pages and home
screens and what-not.

What the heck is going on? Is this now the new way iTunes does things?
Did this get put back to the usual list in iTunes 12.3? I'm so
confused, to say nothing of frustrated. It seems that with each new
version of iTunes, we have to do more and more tabbing to just get to
the things we want in iTunes.

Thanks,
Ari

Hi guys. I don't know if anyone noticed this yet, but in settings you can
now do a search for the specific setting you want to modify. For example, if
you wanted to modify something in Voiceover, you could just type in
Voiceover in the edit field and it'll take you right there if you double tap
the search result. This beats a lot of time going to general, accessibility,
and finding Voiceover that way. To find the search edit box, find the
settings heading and flick right once. Then double tap and you can enter
your search result.

  Hi Ketan,

You are not alone, the News app isn’t even available in Canada and we are
right next door to The mighty United States of Apple.

Furthermore, Apple for some reason which of course can’t have anything at all
to do with money, decided that Canadian carriers should charge their customers
77% more for an iPhone on contract than in the States. The American Dollar
currently is worth about 35% more than the Canadian Dollar, i.e. it takes 1.35
canadian Dollars to buy one American Dollar. For example, an iPhone 6S 64 Gb,
if I interpret this correctly, costs $299 on contract in the States. Based on
the exchange rate, said phone should cost approx. $400 or just over here in
Canada. However, in order to get it Canadians have to plunk down $530 for the
phone with 2-year contract.

Interestingly enough, if I buy a phone outright from Apple, the price is very
close to the US price by the time I factor in the normal exchange.

It is definitely interesting how often features which Apple touts as
extremely awesome are also extremely limited in their availability.

  Dear friends,

On 16th of Sept. IOS 9 got launched and one of the biggest features that was
being touted was the News app. I am sad to report that this app (which should
not cost anything extra to Apple or have any other legal issues) is not
available in India. I was looking forward to it. I am sure India is also one
of the markets that Apple is viewing as its primary market and neither Apple
maps nor apps like the News apps are made available to Indian consumers.
Having said this, it is to be remembered that Apple does not charge nothing
less than the global price of Iphone or Ipad from its Indian consumers. I feel
that this is an important issue and should be conveyed to Apple through its
website as well as social media.

  With best wishes,

I completely agree with John. Go to Settings > Touch Id and Passcode, you
have to enter your passcode to get into this area. Then find the Add
Fingerprint button and just follow the instructions. If you set it up
right

it will be much easier to unlock your phone using Touch Id, it is even
easier and faster than if you don't set up a passcode and just find and
double tap the u nlock button. If your phone is locked, you still have to
press the home or power button to wake it up, then find the unlock button
and double tap it. Once you set up your fingerprint and have a bit of
practice, you can do it all in one press of the home button. You press it
down briefly to wake up the phone, let go but lightly continue to rest
your

finger on the button a second or a bit less and your phone will be
unlocked.

Only time it may not work is if your finger is quite wet or if the button
might have gotten very dirty. Apple says that with the 6S and 6S Plus the
Touch Id sensor is new and it is supposed to be up to twice as fast. To
me

this is hard to understand because even with my 5S it's almost
instantaneous.

pass code each time.

Hi,
When I upgraded to I OS 9 yesterday, it made me create a passcode. I
chose not to do the fingerprint, as that seems more complicated to me.
However, now anytime I want to do anything, I have to enter the
passcode. Does that include answering phone calls? I hope not, as that
is very annoying, and takes a little bit of time to enter the
passcode, and by the time you enter it, the call will be ended.
Thank you,

PS, if I want to disable the passcode, what I go into settings, and
touch ID, then do something from there?

  Hi,

I cannot update apps from the App Store. When in the Updates section of the
App Store, I double-tap the update button for a particular app. The button
then announces “connecting”. It does not get past that point. I have closed
all apps in the app switcher and shut off my phone and get the same result.
This has been going on for over a week.

  Please help!

Re: Upgrading to Ios9 with the iPhone 6

2015-09-19 Thread 'carol.pearso...@googlemail.com' via VIPhone
If you use a bluetooth keyboard and depend on it for regular input, I'd steer
clear. I haven't been able to get mine to work reliably yet. However, I have
a couple more things to try over the weekend. One is that, although it seemed
to still be paired, I might just abandon that pairing and try again from
scratch, just in case it helps.

Anyway, I know various people think this keyboard issue is quite crucial, as is
the fact that some people can't always receive phonecalls; so think before you
do it ...

I took the choice to upgrade, because I don't have to use my phone exclusively
as I have alternatives should I really need.

Hope this helps.

won't create any major issues for me. I'm not as sophisticated as many of you
on the list and basically use English speech email, calendar, texting, camfind,
knfb reader and the other basic apps on the phone.

  Any comments would be appreciated.

Apple is calling this "Low Power Mode" and hence I assume Apple has meant
for this to be used once you get your 20% low battery warning and you want
to get the most out of your remaining battery life.
When the low battery warning appears, the option to turn on low power mode
is on the screen.
You can, however, manually enable it very quickly and easily by telling
SIRI "Turn on Power Saving Mode".
This will display the "Low Power Mode" explanation screen and you can at
that point tap cancel to not turn it on or tap continue and low power mode
will be turned on.
OK, so I now just tried this again and this time it just turned it on
without showing me that screen, but either way, you can turn it on and off
with SIRI. I do agree, though, that this would be not a bad additional
option to have in control centre.

I want to know, why in the world did they not put this power saving option

Would this be an appropriate thing to do via feedback assistant for public

it could take quite long.

If nothing happens after an hour or more, put a few drops of oil into the
headjack port and give the top left corner of the phone a firm tap with a large

By default, all apps will back up to iCloud, as far as I know. The ones I
turn off are the ones that save *all* of their content online anyway.
Instapaper or Pocket, for instance, will pull all your articles, folders, and
so on from the internet once you log in, so there's no sense backing them up.
Same for Facebook, Messenger, Rooms, Twitter, Dice World, Skype, and others. Of
course, I did all this back in the caveman days of early 2015, way back when I
only had 5GB of iCloud space. Now that I'm paying a buck a month for 50GB, I
don't bother and let iCloud back up whatever it wants to.

your Facebook app, for instance, won't come up with you logged in. It will
instead have you log in when you first open it, because iCloud backups don't
contain login details like that. I hope this makes sense.

My AmazonBasics Bluetooth Keyboard will connect to my iPhone 5S and I can
control the phone from the keyboard with the various VO commands.

But, when I go to type in any fields or edit boxes, the phone just bongs.
Quick Nav is off.
This is iOS 9.0.1.
Any ideas?

What Apple Accessibility told me was to toggle the screen curtain, as odd a
suggestion at it sounds. If that doesn't help, lock then unlock the phone.

  hmm not here it isn't.

I thought forgetting then re-pairing with my external keyboard fixed the
problem. Then, I toggled Voiceover off and back on, and things broke again.

Rebooting my phone fixed the probem allowing me to use the keyboard again.

But here's where it gets strange and quite frustrating.

I thought at this point I had come up with repeatable steps to break then
fix this issue.
Forget/re-pair with device fixes, and turning VO off and back on breaks
it. Reboot phone to fix.
But, running through that procedure to check its repeatability caused
things to break again. Nothing I do is restoring functionality with my keyboard
again, not re-pairing, not rebooting.

Re: Facetime Is Missing

2015-09-25 Thread 'carol.pearso...@googlemail.com' via VIPhone

OK, it's probably there still. This happened to me in Version 8.

Ask Siri to go to Facetime and see if you get it. If you do then that
probably means that it's hidden between two others somewhere. Try to back
out and see where that takes you, but remember you may not see it. It could
also be hiding in a folder which has been, perhaps inadveertently, created.

I can't remember any more detail as to how I got it to be seen again but
think I just moved some things off the page.

Hello Carol. I have a 5S and it uses a lightning charger. The charger
consists of a cable with a USB end and a small end which goes into the
charging port on your phone. There should also be a small cube with a
two-pronged electrical plug.

I dabble a bit with the Reader and know it has a lot going for it but haven't
found it to be my favourite or the one I use a lot, so I'd like to get to grips
with it some more and, hopefully, use more of its features competently.

Re: The final chapter, was: The story continues... Long lost iPhone 6S has finally resurfaced after snow melt

2016-04-23 Thread 'carol.pearso...@googlemail.com' via VIPhone
I'm delighted at this news and do wonder what Apple will say to this adventure!
Yes, be sure you let them know!:)

I hope that either the screen just starts working again or that you're able to
replace it very soon.

Meantime, we're so pleased to hear the news!:)

Re: OT a question about tivo

2017-10-02 Thread 'carol.pearso...@googlemail.com' via VIPhone
Hi.
As a matter of interest, in case I decide to stay with Virgin, which Tivo box
are you actually using and is this the latest one?
Is there anything that doesn't work well or that someone would want to know
before making a decision to go that route?

Thanks for any answers on this! I'm keeping my options open and looking keenly
for new ways of getting Freeview easily, so all these things are of interest to
me.

Thanks for any more you can give.

used is really very simple. Every time you visit a Website that requires a

1Password add-on installed, 1Password will open, prompt you for the master
unlock password, and offer a dialog to save the password for the Website just

1P opens, prompts you for the master unlock password, then posts the HTML form

0was 1Password remembers more than just passwords. There's a Wallet section
where you can store credit cards, a secure notes section, an accounts section,
and at least one other which I cannot remember at this moment. The problem
iseagetting to those other options in the main window. Neither JAWS nor NVDA
can find, no less change, the category list without use of the screenreader's
review cursor. This may only be a problem in 1Password 4. Version 6 may have
fixed this, but I didn't upgrade to version 6 because I don't want my passwords
store online, or "in the cloud," as they say. I'll make the responsibility of
backing up my password vault my own.
