Re: Install VNC on Solar 2.6

Greetings,
I would like to install VNC on a Sun Spac Ultra 5
running Solaris 2.6. We use it as a network work
management station running HP Openview, which stays
active on the desktop always.
Not being very familiar with Solaris and considering
the importance of this management station, I want to
do my homework before trying to install VNC.

Well, you found the maillist. Scan the archive on SunOS and/or Solaris.
I recall one major flaw: the /tmp/X11... directory is to much
restrictive for vnc: Give the world read and write rights so Xvnc can
put its socket there.

Xvnc for Solaris is available and/or easy to build. I've used it ages
ago (in a previous job) without any problem.

The Sun runs on a local network, and I would like to
use VNC to connect into the Sun station and view the
running HP Openview session that is active on the
desktop.

?? You indicate the session at the console?? That depends on how that is
done. I don't recall there is a vnc-module to Xsun (suns X11 server) as
there is to xfree86 (nore do I recall such a mdule to HPs X11 server). I
bet all you can build for HP-UX is buildable on Solaris.

If you run XFree86 (4.x) on solaris, than the vnc-module should be
buildable and usable.

Can anyone provide some pointers for successful
installation of VNC on Solaris 2.6? Am trying to
avoid having much downtime.

Best to start with the default vncserver and get that going.
To have the same app in a vnc-session and on the console, start a
vnc-session that can be accessed with more viewers: See the Xvnc options
with `Xvnc --help`, provide that option to `vncserver`.

Now open a viewer on the console and on your destop and start the
application in that vnc-session and off you go.

This is not the best solution but it should get you going. the better
part is that the app runs in a vnc-session so the console can loggout too.

If someone has much experience with Solaris 2.6 and
VNC, it would be worth a couple of hours of consulting
to assist in the installation of VNC.
Thanks!

RE: PCanywhere and VNC

2004-11-18 Thread Ken
I have pcAnywhere 11.0.1 RealVNC 4.0 installed on my client's pc and my
pc.
I have been connected to my client's pc using pcAnywhere and RealVNC at the
same time. I wanted to compare refresh rates. RealVNC was great compared to
pcAnywhere. Both pc's are running Windows XP Pro fully patched.
My client is not yet comfortable with RealVNC yet, so he uses pcAnywhere
when he is out of his office. But this way I can still connect when he is
connected.

They are incompatible in the sense that you cannot have a PC Anywhere

Anywhere server.

You can have both pieces of software on the computer at a time though,
they don't hinder each other.

I can attest to the fact that they are NOT incompatible, as far as
interfering with each other. Again, as Viv mentioned, you can't use VNC to
talk to PC Anywhere or vice versa, but they don't conflict.

Hi Folks,

I have started to have a problem with VNC where I can make a connection to a
Windows 2003 server via VNC and see the standard Windows 2003 log in screen,
but I can't actually try to log in I get a standard Windows error The
system could not log you on. Make sure your User name and domain are
correct, then type your password again. Letters in passwords must be typed
using the correct case.

If I actually go to the console and use the same password, it lets me log
in, and then I can go back to my VNC session (that has watched me actually
log in!) and carry on...

I have tried uninstalling VNC and re-installing it, but this didn't help.

RE: mulitple displays not working

2004-11-18 Thread James Weatherall
Andrew,

The VNC Display Number does not have anything to do with the physical
displays attached to your Windows PC, but is simply used to determine which
port to accept VNC connections on.

Making only the primary display available remotely is a characteristic of
any VNC 3.3 based software, which TightVNC is one example of.

VNC 4 works correctly with multiple monitors, making the entire desktop
(i.e. all monitors) available remotely.

VNC Enterprise Edition provides the functionality of VNC 4, but can alse
remote individual monitors, via the DisplayDevice registry setting. You
would set this, for example, to \\.\DISPLAY3 and VNC Server would then
make only display 3 available rather than the entire virtual desktop.

Regards,

Wez @ RealVNC Ltd.

 Dear All,

We are having this problem with TightVNC, but I think it is
more or less the same as RealVNC. We use VNC in conjunction
with an Access Grid indtallation. Our Access Grid PC has 4
displays (0 is the PC console, 1,2,3 are the projectors).

I want to run a Powerpoint (or any application) onto display
3 (ie screen/projector 3) and then connect using TightVNC
from other sites (my test PC at moment).

 This is what I get:
 1) connect to 123.45.67.89 (our AG machine)
   - display 0 (ie the IGCube monitor) is opened - as expected
 2) try connecting to 123.45.67.89:3
   - VNCViewer returns can't find server or similar
 3) open up VNCServer config and set it to display 3
   - VNCViewer now connects to 123.45.67.89:3
BUT displays the IGCube monitor (ie display 0
 not display 3)
   - VNCViewer returns can't find server for 123.45.67.89
(ie all this has done is made some internal VNC name
for display 3 which still really refers to display 0).

 4) OK, so, I open up Control Panel / Display and set display
3 to be the primary (or similar) display. System does nasty
things as expected to open windows and opens new apps on
display 3, but when I then connect to
 123.45.67.89 VNCViewer displays display 3.

4 is not a workable solution as we operate our AG on display
0 (ie not projected onto our screens) usually. I just did
that to prove that VNC connects to primary display, and
 doesn't see the others.

I don't think this is firewall as I have configured Kerio on
this machine, and my test (VNCViewer) machine is in the same sub-net.

 Any suggested fixes / workarounds?

 Thanks

XInputExtension

2004-11-18 Thread Peter Rindfuss
I use realvnc 4 in xinetd mode on a suse 9.2 system. This includes
kernel 2.6.8, xorg-x11 6.8.1, and kde 3.3.

realvnc (from a win xp client) works very well, but I frequently
notice the error message

Xlib: extension XInputExtension missing on display
selene.wz-berlin.de:1.0.
Failed to get list of devices.

This message shows up in ~/.xsession-errors, and on the console when
I start gui programs from there.

It seems to happen with many - but not all - gui programs. Examples
are konqueror, mozilla, rekall.

Consequences vary. Some of these programs ignore the problem and
continue normally. Some cannot be started (occasionally, at least)
from an icon or from the Run command prompt in KDE, only from a
console shell. Rekall crashes.

I know that XInputExtension can be compiled into an X server. Are
there any plans to do so in realvnc's X server?

2004-11-18 Thread Wall, John
Hi All,

My use of VNC V4 under Windows environment sometimes encounters a similar
situation re case of entering data from VNC Viewer to Server.

I have found in most instances the Server keyboard may inadvertantly be in
Caps mode and the Viewer is in unshifted mode.

There is little way of knowing if this is the case and all I do is put my
caps key on the Viewer to get round logging onto distant Server.

Just a piece of information.

Wez in both your examples below the Hash key was displayed.

I am sure you understand the country of origin's keyboard may display a
different symbol however the ASCII key code would be equivalent.

John,

No, the keys do give different character codes, otherwise the characters
produced wouldn't match the symbols, since UK keyboards have both hash and
pound symbols on them. What you saw in my mail is basically, a 7-bit ASCII
vs 8-bit ISO-8859-1 thing, I think. The pound sign is character 163 in
ISO-8859-1 while the hash is ASCII code 35 - ASCII mailers will probably
fudge one into the other to allow it to be displayed.

Cheers,

How to handle protocol extensions

2004-11-18 Thread John D. Robertson
Dear VNC developers,

I am extending the RFB protocol and would like to do it in a manner that is
most beneficial for the community at large. The impetus for the changes are
as follows:

* Minimize bandwidth usage, and maximize performance on low speed connections.
* Minimize the load and complexity on a RFB proxy/mirror server application.

My experiments with 8 bit color depth have shown that applying bzip2
compression to an entire raw encoded full frame buffer update will save
roughly 30% size over TightVNC's encoding scheme. This is significant for my
application.

Here is the proposed change:

1) Add a pseudo encoding type such as:

#define rfbEncodingProxyFmt   9

2) Modify the FramebufferUpdate like so:

/*-
 * FramebufferUpdate - a block of rectangles to be copied to the framebuffer.
 *
 * This message consists of a header giving the number of rectangles of pixel
 * data followed by the rectangles themselves. The header is padded so that
 * together with the type byte it is an exact multiple of 4 bytes (to help
 * with alignment of 32-bit pixels):
 *
 * JDR addition - if rfbEncodingProxyFmt is enabled, then:
 * 1) The 'pad' byte is followed by an unsigned long which is the block size
 * of the remaining frame buffer update. This makes it easy to proxy or
 *   broadcast.
 * 2) If the first bit of 'pad' is set, then the remaining frame update is
 *bzip2 compressed.
 */

typedef struct _rfbFramebufferUpdateMsg {
CARD8 type; /* always rfbFramebufferUpdate */
CARD8 pad;/* JDR - Used if rfbEncodingProxyFmt is enabled! */
/* CARD32 blkSz; -- Exists if rfbEncodingProxyFmt is enabled! */
/* If rfbEncodingProxyFmt is enabled and the 0th bit of 'pad' is set,
 * the remainder of the update is bzip2 compressed
 */
CARD16 nRects;
/* followed by nRects rectangles */
} rfbFramebufferUpdateMsg;

Re: Install VNC on Solar 2.6

2004-11-18 Thread Minna Chau
I've installed VNC4 on solaris 8 lately. Basically,
you can start vncserver without any options. The
tricky part (which I don't really like the way it
works) is that you have to actually start a session
on your vncserver by vncviewer -Shared
hostname:display#, and do your work inside that
viewer so that you can see your work from other
machines later. Then you can start another vncviewer
from other machine to view the same session you
started
on the server. So you are not seeing your desktop.
This is much like Terminal Service on Windows. That's
why I don't really like it, but it works.

 Greetings,

I would like to install VNC on a Sun Spac Ultra 5
running Solaris 2.6. We use it as a network work
management station running HP Openview, which stays
 active on the desktop always.

Not being very familiar with Solaris and
 considering
the importance of this management station, I want
 to
do my homework before trying to install VNC.

Well, you found the maillist. Scan the archive on
 SunOS and/or Solaris.
I recall one major flaw: the /tmp/X11...
 directory is to much
restrictive for vnc: Give the world read and write
 rights so Xvnc can
 put its socket there.

Xvnc for Solaris is available and/or easy to build.
 I've used it ages
ago (in a previous job) without any problem.

The Sun runs on a local network, and I would like
 to
use VNC to connect into the Sun station and view
 the
running HP Openview session that is active on the
 desktop.

?? You indicate the session at the console?? That
 depends on how that is
done. I don't recall there is a vnc-module to Xsun
 (suns X11 server) as
there is to xfree86 (nore do I recall such a mdule
 to HPs X11 server). I
bet all you can build for HP-UX is buildable on
 Solaris.

If you run XFree86 (4.x) on solaris, than the
 vnc-module should be
 buildable and usable.

Can anyone provide some pointers for successful
installation of VNC on Solaris 2.6? Am trying to
 avoid having much downtime.

Best to start with the default vncserver and get
 that going.

To have the same app in a vnc-session and on the
 console, start a
vnc-session that can be accessed with more viewers:
 See the Xvnc options
with `Xvnc --help`, provide that option to
 `vncserver`.

Now open a viewer on the console and on your destop
 and start the
application in that vnc-session and off you go.

This is not the best solution but it should get you
 going. the better
part is that the app runs in a vnc-session so the
 console can loggout too.

If someone has much experience with Solaris 2.6 and
VNC, it would be worth a couple of hours of
 consulting
to assist in the installation of VNC.

 Thanks!

VNC Viewer : Error unable to connect to hotst: Connection refused (10061)

2004-11-18 Thread Ron McKenzie
I get this error when I attempt to connect from my laptop to the
VNCserver 4.0 that I installed on my home PC. I can connect if I use
v.3.3.3 R3 that is also installed on this laptop. I was able to
connect once from this laptop using 4.0 (Monday night 11/15) and my
bro-in-law has no problem with 4.0 from his PCs, however, something
about my install here is off.

All advice cheerfully accepted.

RE: Able to connect, but unable to log in to Windows server... ( U pdate)

2004-11-18 Thread Wall, John
Thanks Wez I can handle the explanation as I am well into ascii character
code being a QBASIC programmer. Your probably correct in saying some
applications may reduce 8big to 7big notation and thus lose the significance
of the character code.

John

Cheers,

Wez @ RealVNC Ltd.

I am sure you understand the country of origin's keyboard may
display a different symbol however the ASCII key code would
 be equivalent.

retranslate them to the wrong thing, in this case screwing
 up the #
key (Hash, not UK pound, which is # :) )
