I'm sure you have it. I am not able to check right now, but It
has something to do with either the DHCP menu or the port
forwarding menu. Just keep looking.:-)

I have the same router and had the same problem. There is a
setting where you can assign a DHCP address to a specific MAC
address. Just get your MAC address with ipconfig and set set the
router to assign a specific IP address to to it. I forget which

it supports "lease time = 32000" (good for ~22 days) Maybe you can set
higher...

You can also "fix" the IP by looking at the current settings, and configure
your PC manual for those.
DHCP CAN BE LEFT RUNNING IN THE SAME RANGE!
In case the IP is already used on the network, both pc's could be
disconnected

To get things going, first fix settings on all pc's, then change the DHCP
range to something else..
If you have x.x.x.1 - x.x.x.253 now, change settings on pc's, then change
the range on the router to x.x.x.100 - x.x.x.253

Please let us know if this works for you..

RE: Linksys Router (WRT54G) Help! Changing IP addresses!

2005-05-13 Thread Maciuca, Dragos
Another thing you can do with some routers is reserve a particular
address from the DHCP pool based on the MAC address. So you would leave
your computer on DHCP, but in the router you can assign a particular IP
to that computer's NIC MAC.

So, say your MAC address is 00-11-22-33-44-55-66and you DHCP pool is
192.168.0.2-192.168.0.50, then you can reserve 192.168.0.20 to
00-11-22-33-44-55-66. I don't know if WRT54G can do that, but my
Netgear router does.

Re: Linksys Router (WRT54G) Help! Changing IP addresses!

2005-05-12 Thread Doyal McVicker
Hi Kevin,
The IP address you gave is the intranet (local Lan) address for one of your
computers. You need to make the router static on the intranet side. It is
my understanding that you can have both static and DHCP running on the same
router but I have not attempted it yet. If you will change the lan to static
IP and assign each computer a address it most likely will end your problems.
From your message I assume you know how to forward a port in the WRT54G
router. This is the same router I am using on my site. I have assumed that
you have administrator rites on the Lan and router.

If I can be of further help please let me know.

VNC List:
I am having some trouble setting up my RealVNC on some computers
behind my Linksys WRT54G wireless router. I have a basic
understanding of how everything works, but I'm getting tangled up in
the port forwarding and DHCP stuff.
Here is the main problem:
On my server desktop, I am running VNC Server along with DynDNS
Updater so I can keep up with the dynamic Comcast High-Speed IP
address. Therefore, when I type in xxx.dyndns.org, I should be able
to access my computer. Here is the problem however: Sometimes when I
restart the desktop with VNC server, the IP address will change
(192.168.1.102 to 192.168.1.106). When it switches IPs, 106 does not
have port forwarding on and I can no longer access it. Because I am
still running testing, I simply open up port 5900 on 192.168.1.106 and
the xxx.dyndns.org address will work out fine. Attempting to access
it via the actual IP address (192.168.1.106) works fabulously. I just
can't seem to figure out how to keep up with the DHCP giving me new
IPs. (Keep in mind, the above testing deals with all LAN-side
testing.)
I have tried setting a static IP, but I don't know the DNS
information, so I think that contributed to my loss of Internet. What
other options are there?
Thanks!

What you can do is set YOUR machines to static IPs either above or below the
range that the router hands out and let other people who come in for a short
period of time get a dynamic IP from your router.

Going with a local static IP has to be your best option. Your LinkSys router
should have an option to automatically discover the DNS Server addresses
(This is almost a de-facto feature, these days) Assuming that this is so;
then you should configure your PC to use the IP address of the router as a
DNS Server.
Also read the Routers manual about DNS Forwarding as there might be some
helpful information there.

Any decent ISP should be happy to give their DNS server numbers if you ask
their support department though.

Re: Linksys Router (WRT54G) Help! Changing IP addresses!

2005-05-12 Thread John R Larsen
There are two ways to figure out the DNS information. The router has a Status
page that gives
the IP addresses for your ISP's DNS servers. Just enter those numbers in when
you configure
a static IP address. The other way is to use the "ipconfig /all" command in a
command prompt.
That will also display the IP addresses of the DNS servers. Those numbers
don't change often
if ever. When configuring your machine to use a static IP you also need to set
the gateway IP.
That will be the address of your router. That information shows up in the
"ipconfig /all" output
as well.

Thanks!

Kevin,
on the router side, you might be able to tune the maximum time an ip
address is affected by the dhcp server. On my router, it is defaulted to
30 minutes, this means when switching on my computer one day after
having switched it off, I can't be sure about its next IP address. I
have changed that to 15 days, so I'm nearly sure I always have the same
address :)
However, turning the IP address to static should get a could results.
Assuming your router is also a modem, you may be able to do what you
want : your router may be able to act as a DNS server, therefore, you
can put it as primary DNS. However, if its not capable of doing this, it
should give you the DNS ip address it uses when connecting to the
internet. Read your router manual for more help on all these.
Hope this helps,
Regards

Re: Linksys Router (WRT54G) Help! Changing IP addresses!

2005-05-12 Thread B. Scott Smith
Yes, I also have the WRT54G, and it is terrible that the stock firmware
does not allow me to "lock" my IP by MAC address. To me, that is basic
functionality that is missing from this router. The only way I have
gotten it to work is to setup a static IP, and bypass the DHCP
altogether. As it turns out, there is some open-source firmware for the
WRT54G on sourceforge.net that adds this functionality, but I haven't
had the [EMAIL PROTECTED] to try them...
