[Voyage-linux] building a custom Voyage Linux installer for PCEngines APU2

2018-12-04 Thread Tully, Chris
Hello List,

I am trying to build a custom installer for putting Voyage onto a PCEngines
APU2 (apu3c2 or apu3c4 I believe). I have chosen as my starting point just
building a basic Voyage installer with no changes. I think the build process is
working but the resulting installer will not boot my APU2.

To more completely describe the situation, I can boot the APU2 as far as the
boot selection screen but when I choose any of those initial options, the
system hangs.

What am I doing wrong? I am sure you need more details but I am not sure what
those details would be. So please ask me questions and I will answer.

Re: [Voyage-linux] Will an MQA decoder become available in Voyage MPD ??

2016-08-15 Thread chris hermansen
Cor and everyone,

MQA is patented closed source and the decoding technology must be licensed
from its creators.

Just when we have a great selection of music in open formats without any
kind of restriction on the decoding, and a great selection of players that
can play those open formats.

Effectively MQA is DRM. If you don't have a licensed decoder you can't get
the full benefit.

What a disappointment. Please don't support MQA.

OK so to confirm that I understand correctly:

6 days per week the computer starts up, writes its log files, and shuts
down correctly.

1 day per week the computer starts up, does not appear to write its log
files, and hangs up.

Is that correct?

If so, have you examined the log files on "the bad day" while the computer
is running?

Are you running the computer with a read-only root and using /tmp for
storing /var while running? And expecting the shutdown process to copy the
files in /tmp back to /var? If so, that may be why your files appear not to
be written - because they are not copied back on shutdown.

Is there a crontab entry whose timing corresponds to the hang-up? If so you
should check to see if it might be the cause.

Two suggestions.

The 3.14 kernel is pretty old. Can you try this on a newer kernel, for
example on a desktop or laptop running a 4.x kernel? Maybe the latest
Ubuntu or Fedora live CD?

Then, if that doesn't work, try the ALSA user mailing list

I can't say precisely why but I don't like the idea of doing a bunch of

[Voyage-linux] tmpfs too small?

2015-03-22 Thread chris hermansen
Good people,

I am running Mubox on a cubox-i4. A great music player, really.

One small problem I have... The machine never seems to need to be rebooted,
but every so often when I login to apply updates I start getting messages
about write errors. I think this happens when tmpfs has filled up.

My cubox-i4 has a nice big class 10 micro SSD. df -k reports

Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
rootfs 15312852545416 13973196 4% /
/dev/root15312852545416 13973196 4% /
devtmpfs 1035508 01035508 0% /dev
tmpfs 207136 304 206832 1% /run
tmpfs5120 0 5120 0% /run/lock
tmpfs 1035672 01035672 0% /run/shm
tmpfs 4194304 26364191668 1% /tmp
tmpfs 4194304 26364191668 1% /var/log
tmpfs 4194304 26364191668 1% /var/tmp
tmpfs 4194304 26364191668 1% /var/lib/mpd
tmpfs 4194304 26364191668 1% /var/lib/alsa
/dev/sda1 1922729832 168654892 1656382832 10% /esata/hdd0

Would it be reasonable to allocate a few more Gb of that unused space in
/dev/root to tmpfs?

If so, is there a voyage-specific guide on this topic?

If I power down the cubox and extract the SSD, and put it in a carrier in
an Ubutu machine, can I just change partition sizes?

Thanks!

Does this include MuBox? I visited the link there and it says something
about last update being in 2013.

Plus my CuBoxi-4 which is up to date seems to be running Deb7.

Thanks!

I don't have any direct help for you; I only use my cubox-i4 for 2 channel
mpd.

But, have you read the Alsa configuration docs?

http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Asoundrc

Also various linux distros have varying amounts of alsa configuration info
(Arch Linux, for example); though sadly a lot of them hide Alsa behind
Pulse, which is a fine general purpose interface but completely misses the
boat for people who want to play their music back at its native resolution.

If you are only using mpd you can through-configure alsa using the mpd
config file; probably also the same with various video players.

Assuming you have checked out the above, have you asked on the Alsa list?

The reference to the mail archive is very informative, thank you!

I did some reading about the Mubox kernel over on some Debian page
today and i see what you mean by the last point.

I will think this over, but I believe I am clear for the time being.

Once more, thank you for this wonderful work.

Well... that was my question - will the new packages become available
via apt-get upgrade, or do we need to do apt-get dist-upgrade?

Martin, what is not clear is, are you answering my question or also
asking Punky for confirmation?

Apologies in advance if this is a silly question... most of the time I
am an Ubuntu desktop user and debian in general, and voyage in
particular, seem to have some important differences that I don't
understand.

For those of us already running Voyage Linux (in my case, a mubox
installation performed last spring with the 3.14 kernel), will we
automatically get these updates, or do we need to (should we) do a
dist-upgrade?

The 3.14 kernel I am running on my CuBox-i4 makes me a bit nervous as
I don't quite get how it got into the image I installed...

Thanks for any light you can shed

Is syslogd running (ps -ef | grep log)?

Seems odd to me you don't have any cron stuff in there.

[Voyage-linux] fixing locales issue

2014-07-09 Thread chris hermansen
Good people;

This morning I decided to chase down and fix the errors I get regarding
locales on voyage.

This is the classic example of a problem with a lot of heat but not much
light. Anyway, after reading a lot of different posts on the topic,
including a sequence on this list in January past, I solved the problem.

First, the system must be writeable, so

remountrw

Then, I had to install the full locales package

apt-get install locales-all

Then I tried to reconfigure but with out a /usr/share/i18n/SUPPORTED file
that didn't work, so I did this:

echo en_CA.UTF-8 > /usr/share/i18n/SUPPORTED
dpkg-reconfigure locales

That worked! no more LC_* error messages from anything. Finally, since I
did not need a full set of locales, I did this:

apt-get install localepurge
localepurge

And made the system read only

remountro

That's it! I hope this helps others on this list...

By this I guess you mean you don't get prompted for a password...? Are you
sure the IP address is correct?

If you don't get a response from your attempt to login via ssh, it's
possible that the service hasn't started. This could be for all kinds of
reasons - it could be misconfigured, or something else could be preventing
it from running.

One thing you might be able to do to diagnose it is to shut the machine
down, extract the memory card, put it in your laptop, mount it, and take a
look in its var/log/syslog to see if there are any messages of interest.
You could also check configuration files to make sure things look

I just tried the web login on my voyage box - entered "root" and "voyage",
and pressed the button, and received a brand new blank login screen. So
whatever this is doing on my machine, it is not very interesting.

Re: [Voyage-linux] CuBox-i4, esata, kernel 3.14 - problems writing files?

2014-06-05 Thread chris hermansen
Yesterday I bought another hi-res download and decided to try copying it
over, one file at a time, with a break between each file.

This seemed to work fine, no messages in syslog nor any other hiccups.

So I remain puzzled about the behaviour below. Once again, if anyone can
offer ideas on how to diagnose it further, I would be very grateful!

Thanks!

Thanks very much, Punky.

I assume if I wish to install it I can adapt the install-mubox-cubox-i.sh

You might want to try LXDE. It is pretty skimpy on resource usage.

You should be able to do something like

# remountrw
# sudo apt-get install lxde
# remountro

But I must emphasize I have never tried this.

Good luck!

[Voyage-linux] kernel 3.14.4 is not latest?

2014-06-03 Thread chris hermansen
Good people;

I continue to try to understand why I cannot write successfully to my esata
drive on my cubox-i4.

I would like to try the 3.14.4 kernel. However i notice that

http://www2.voyage.hk/download/voyage-mubox/cubox-i/kernel-cubox-i-latest.tar.xz

has the same date as the 3.14.0 kernel (31 March 2014).

Can anyone tell me if the 3.14.4 kernel works, and if so, if it works well?

Thanks in advance!

[Voyage-linux] CuBox-i4, esata, kernel 3.14 - problems writing files?

2014-06-03 Thread chris hermansen
17:42:20 voyage-mubox vmunix: sd 0:0:0:0: [sda]

and so on.

I unmounted the filesystem, disconnected it, mounted it on a machine
running Ubuntu via the USB interface (rather than the esata), did an fsck.
There were some inodes to clean up, and the usual collateral fixing, but
nothing too serious it seems.

Anyway - anyone have any ideas what might be going on here?

First of all, thanks for your patience!

Second, the reason I would consider removing them is because apt-get
generates errors trying to retrieve the package files (I guess, because
they have been moved), of the nature I mentioned previously:

Err http://download.solid-run.com cubox/main armhf Packages

(perhaps I am too anal about these kind of things but I don't like seeing
error messages from apt or other important system stuff).

Or are they there for some other reason (eg needed by the 3.14 kernel)?

Should I be commenting something out in my sources.list or sources.list.d

[Voyage-linux] voyage mubox memory allocation failed during fsck

2014-05-12 Thread chris hermansen
Good people;

Today I ran fsck on my external 1TB music drive (formatted as ext2) and
this is what happened:

root@voyage-mubox:~# fsck /dev/sda1
fsck from util-linux 2.20.1
e2fsck 1.42.5 (29-Jul-2012)
/dev/sda1 was not cleanly unmounted, check forced.
Pass 1: Checking inodes, blocks, and sizes
Pass 2: Checking directory structure
Error allocating icount structure: Memory allocation failed
e2fsck: aborted
root@voyage-mubox:~#

Probably in my 30 years of working with Unix and Linux I have run fsck
nearly 1000 times and I have to say "it's never done that before".

I am guessing that this may be due to limited real memory in the CuBox-i4
and no swap. Anyone think that is reasonable?

I am also thinking that this is not a Really Good Thing ie I want to be
able to run fsck on this device from time to time. Now if I can't get it
through the way things are, I can connect it to my Ubuntu laptop, run fsck,
then reconnect it to the CuBox-i4. But I don't feel like this is a good
long-term plan.

So, I am begging you all in your collected wisdom for some advice.

Re: [Voyage-linux] Is Marvell Sheeva CPU OK for Linux Voyage? Is there a good little motherboard?

2012-06-14 Thread Chris Feldhaus

Denis,

Marvell Sheeva CPU core is ARM architecture while Voyage Linux is
available for the i386 and amd64 architectures.

Here is a previous discussion about this:
http://list.voyage.hk/pipermail/voyage-linux/2012-January/014605.html

The DreamPlug does come with "Debian Squeeze 6.0 pre-installed (Linux
2.6.38.8 Kernel)" though and you could make the file system read-only if
needed. I would suggest taking a look at the voyage init scripts or
there are several guides online if you want take on that task.

[Voyage-linux] Dependency booting and remountro

2012-06-11 Thread Chris Feldhaus
I was having some problems with dependency booting starting init scripts
in incorrect sequence as related to voyage-sync. Specifically, dhclient
was able to open its PID and leases files before voyage-sync completed
setting up the tmpfs directories and then remountro would fail producing
the error " / is busy." I worked around this by disabling
dependency-based boot sequencing. Here is the relevant excerpt from
Debian's release notes.

http://www.debian.org/releases/squeeze/i386/release-notes/ch-whats-new.en.html#dependency-boot

2.1.4. Dependency booting

An important improvement in the Debian GNU/Linux boot system is the
introduction of dependency-based boot sequencing and parallel boot. This
feature is enabled by default in new installs and it will be enabled for
upgrades from lenny, if possible.

This feature is enabled through the use of insserv by sysv-rc to order
init.d scripts based on their declared dependencies[3]. It has been
possible after a sustained effort to adapt all the boot scripts of
packages provided in the distribution as well as the boot system itself.

With dependency-based boot sequencing it is also now possible to run the
boot system scripts in parallel which can, under most circumstances,
improve the speed of the boot process. This feature is enabled by
default, in new systems and upgrades, whenever possible. To disable it
specify

CONCURRENCY=none

in /etc/default/rcS. For more information on this feature refer to the
information available in /usr/share/doc/insserv/README.Debian.

[Voyage-linux] MySQL

2009-04-24 Thread Chris

Hi,

I want to get MySQL working on Voyage and maintaining it as readonly to
guard against any damage to the data due to power outages.
When I try to install and run MySQL I am no longer able to mount read
only, so I guess it is writing temp files or something which will need

[Voyage-linux] ARM

2009-04-17 Thread Chris

Hi all,

What does it take to get Voyage or Debian working on an ARM system?
Can I port my current Voyage Custom Distro to ARM?

Looking at ARM for the first time, cheaper, smaller, but maybe a bit
harder to work with.

Re: [Voyage-linux] Internet connection

2009-04-14 Thread Chris

Hi all,

On a similar note.. this may be completely impossible, but does anyone
know of an app that is able to auto configure an internet connection if
it requires a static IP.
EG, there is no user to specify the internet connection variables and
the app is able to work those out based on some sort of nmap scan or
something.

Thanks,
Chris

[Voyage-linux] Voyage 0.5.2 doesn't want to flash after recovery from a backup copy

2009-03-06 Thread Chris Pawelko

Good morning,
My PC that had my Voyage 0.5.2 with some scripts on it crashed. I had a
backup copy of the distro on an external hard drive.
When I restored the folder and I go to usr/local/sbin and do a
./voyage.update, 1; I get the following error:

Fatal Error: Logic error - can't find voyage.conf!

I started ./voyage.update again but this time did an Update existing
Voyage configuration and I put in the proper directory. Then when I went
to Update Settings I get:

/usr/local/sbin/voyage-update.sh: line 51: /usr/local/sbin/do-update.sh:

Has anyone seen this before?

[Voyage-linux] Xorg and Voyage

2009-02-19 Thread Chris Rodley

Hi all,

I'm loving the new version. Easy to set up and get going.. thanks Voyage
team!

Has any body setup Xorg with Voyage?
I have installed xfce4 and xorg and I am struggling to configure it and
get it to display anything.

Are then any Voyage tricks or things that I need to do to get it work?

I am using a mini standard computer with 1Ghz and 256MB ram booting from
a 2gb CF card.

It uses the XGI Z9s Video chip:

Look at into /etc/voyage-util file, at line 52 you can see that each
reboot remount the file system as writeable.
Reboot system 2 times, then delete this lines, that can be problematic
when you power off your machine..

and comparing with /etc/ i know /etc/ has a lot more files in it, so i don't
understand or i cannot see how these files are getting copied from as they
certainly don't seem to be coming from the /ro directory.
Also, looking at the scripts remountro and remountrw i see a binary called sync
is called, is this a custom written application? Does it search the /rw file
system for changes and write to /ro?

Many thanks,

Chris

RE: [Voyage-linux] Shorewall Read Only /var/lib/shorewall/ problem

2008-03-13 Thread Chris Morley
Hi Wayne,

Just re-did the instructions from scratch:

voyage:/var/lib/shorewall# mv /var/lib/shorewall
/ro/var/lib/shorewallvoyage:/var/lib/shorewall# ln -s /rw//var/lib/shorewall
/var/lib/shorewallremountro
fastreboot
However on start its complaining shorewall directory is a symbolic link!
voyage:/etc/shorewall# shorewall startCompiling...
Initializing... ERROR: /var/lib/shorewall is a Symbolic LinkI will try and
hunt in the scripts it i can just set the above directory elsewhere to the ram
disk /var/tmp

Any ideas on the above?

Many thanks,

Chris

I also noticed when using shorewall it did slow down the throughput of the data.

I can get double the amount without shorewall, the test was done on a old
version of shorewall and voyage and I have not retested recently.

Hi, I am trying to get shorewall running and whilst it installs from apt-get
fine, i am having issues with the Read only file system. Shorewall seems to
write the compiled scripts into /var/lib/shorewall. When i run remountrw there
is no problem, however with remountro hitting 'shorewall start' in the shell
gives a whole raft of errors:Compiling.../usr/share/shorewall/functions: line

this /var/lib/shorewall/ directory can be made rw? Or perhaps even plain old
ramdisk is ok, but consist of a default set of files upon boot? Would
appreciate insights if the two options above are possible. The other option is
for me to change the init.d/shorewall scripts to remountrw and remountro around
the start and stop parts, but i would prefer the solution above and it would
also help me learn about voyage linux which rocks :) Many thanks in advance,
Chris

RE: [Voyage-linux] Shorewall Read Only /var/lib/shorewall/ problem

2008-03-12 Thread Chris Morley
Hi Wayne,
Thanks for the fast reply.
I did try that already, i created the symbolic link following the readme. I
tried the following:

#remountrw #mv /var/lib/shorewal /ro/var/lib/shorewall #ln -s
/rw//var/lib/shorewall /var/lib/shorewall#remountro

The problem is whenever i went #shorewall start, it would say files already
exist. Would appreciate any guideance on the above, im sure i am making a
mistake as i dont understand the above. I presume anything in /ro gets copied
to the root file system, and anything in /rw/ allows the directory to be
written to in the root file system? Again not so sure so would appreciate a
little explanation if anyone has time. In fact i am interested in the whole
rw/ro setup so links for my reading on how it all works would be
appreciated.Regarding the speed issue I have also tried arnos iptables script,
that apt-get installed fine and no issues with RO directories. Would that be as
secure? I chose Shorewall over Arnos script as it seemed to have more features
but it is quite a lot more involved. I do plan to use OpenVPN also to link
sites so Shorewall would be better imho. I am running on 1GHz boxes, i would
hope Shorewall wouldnt slow it down that much on a reasonably powerful
dedicated box? Many thanks for the help its very much appreciated, been pulling
my hair out all day!

Regards,

Chris

[Voyage-linux] Java Runtime on a WRAP

2007-01-02 Thread Chris Cusack
This question has probably been asked a 1000 times but being a newbie .

Can Java Runtime be run on a Wrap running Voyage?

There is a few postings on installing Java on Debian Sarge but it all seems
to involve starting from the .bin and building a deb package using fakeroot
and java-package. I cannot manage to get java-package in any of my
sources.list entries. Will this run on the Wrap? Is there any information
specific to installing Java on the WRAP?
