FW: G4 Titanium PowerBooks

2002-05-03 Thread Jon Davison
Brett

Nice machine, smooth as silk to use, light, the case is easily scratched,
screen gets dirty quickly but I love it. Oh yes, within a fortnight of
buying it, the mother board popped its clogs and was replaced, otherwise no
problem so far. I run OS9.2 and OSX no problem. Track pad is a bit
temperamental but works well with a mouse and ext keyboard. I use Photoshop
7 and Dreamweaver 4 daily with ease. Buy all the RAM you can shove into it.

That's about it
Good luck
Jon

Subject: G4 Titanium PowerBooks

Hi All

How many out there own a Titanium G4 PowerBook?

I looking for general opinion on these machines as I am considering buying
one. I have heard some bad things about these machines such as mother board
failure, and FireWire port failure. I was just wondering in anyone has
experienced these problems and if there are any other problems. Have they
been fixed? Should I wait a while longer?

Looking forward to hearing responses.

We forked out the extra for the AppleCare on the iBook we just got as well.
I've never bought it for a desktop machine and probably never will but
something that gets carried around all day back and forth to school is
different.

My choice would be the Cannon D1250U2F which can scan photos, slides and

Any idea of which (if any) of these run on OS X ?

Referencing http://consumer.usa.canon.com/printers/osx.html (which I
do regularly waiting hopefully for my Canon N1220U (which I
love(d?)!) to be updated) it says all Canon ones are compatible only
in Classic mode (although the 1250s aren't specifically mentioned).

"Similar to the testing required for MFPs, Canon is continuing to
test the scan function in OS X. This ensures that when Canon releases
a new scanner driver, it will meet the expectations of our customers."

Yeah, right. Any time you're ready guys...
Peter.

Any idea of which (if any) of these run on OS X ?

Also, does anyone know if the Epson 1650 Photo runs on X ?

If you're going to fork out the big $$$ for a TiBook, fork out some
extra for a 3 year AppleCare extended warranty as well.

Or spend less and buy an iBook :-)

Re: DreamWeaver MX

2002-05-03 Thread crazy_ebot
Heya Matthew, Peter.

I've been using DW for 2 days now. Still slow at _really_ simple
things ... very frustrating.

As for user interfaces, my experience was that the Adobe UI for
Golive 5 wasn't the problem. Stuff like rendering non-GL5 html
weirdly, and not being able to place an object hard to the left
(easily). Also, GL5 freaked out alot if I made changes to site files
outside of GL5's site window ... something to do with the method
it used to store site information ... ?

I actually moved to Dreamweaver because I found it simpler to
use as a visual html editor (I'm one of those crazy designer types
who's only now learning html/javascript/xml/php/cfm etc)

I like what I'm hearing about GL6 though, and if they've sorted out
the aforementioned problems I had with it, and the common
critique that it changes your hand written code, and I'd be
tempted to switch back. I figure I'll wait til Macromedia
commercially release DWMX before I make a decision though - it
feels like it's a few bug tweaks and optmisations away from
being a pretty cool product.

Of course, I should _probably_ just give them all away and buy a
copy of bbedit ;-)

As always, just my 2 cents. Discussing UI in software programs
is generally subjective and fun. :-)

Tobes.

Re: G4 Titanium PowerBooks

2002-05-03 Thread Matthew Healey
Hi Brett,

The original 400 and 500Mhz TiBook did have a fairly serious problem with
the FireWire controller, which would intermittently fry itself. This usually
means a logic board replacement.

The newer 550 and 667's do not have this or any other problem that I know
of. I have now owned two TiBooks and both of them have been pretty solid. I
will be buying my third as soon as I sell my current 550.

Some people think they are a bit flimsy, but as long as you treat then with
care, they are a very solid machine.

Adobe indesign (Apple-subject 076410 case 155728) (Adobe case 104716)

2002-05-03 Thread Nathalie Collins
Hi Everyone:

Thanks to Larry, David and others for the tip about the installer fix on
versiontracker and the Adobe Web Site for Indesign 2.0 Installations.

Although these fixes may have worked for others, they have not worked for
me. I am repackaging the product and returning it to the reseller for a
refund. The product is defective.

I have just spent 20 minutes on the phone with Adobe tech support
blasting them for:
1. Shipping a defective product
2. Shipping a defective product where the posted fix was not in the readme
or otherwise indicated in the packaging
3. Shipping a defective product where the fault and/or fix was not indicated
to suppliers and resellers to pass on to customers
4. Having tech support staff who ARE NOT AWARE THAT THE FIX RESIDES ON THEIR
OWN WEBSITE.

Although the fix has not worked for me it has worked for others, so it is
unbelievably inexcusable that Adobe Techs not know about AND to add insult
to industry ask me to ring them back when I have figured out what the
problem is!!

I was (like others on this list) an Adobe true believer, but now I am
bitterly disappointed, and I am going to stick with PageMaker 7.0. It may
not be as good as In Design but at least the bloody thing installs!!

Regards,
Nathalie

Scanner prices

2002-05-03 Thread Paul Weaver
Prowling at Freo Officeworks this week this little shopper noticed they had
quite a lot of flatbed scanners with Mac provisions. The Mac info was on
accompanying leaflets for each machine. Coles Myer Sharecard holders can
get something like five percent off these prices. However, as we know the
sharecard discounts are soon to be abandoned. Will the prices then drop to
compensate? Ha, Ha! Hopefully other suppliers are able to do even better
than these prices. Customers rule OK!

Hewlett Packard Scanjet 4400C $239

Hewlett Packard 4400 silver $239

Cannon D1250U2 $247

Cannon 1250U2F $397

Cannon N 676U $207

Cannon N670U $195

Cannon 660U $259

My choice would be the Cannon D1250U2F which can scan photos, slides and
negatives. It is bundled with a variety of reputable software.

This is purely personal preference, but I have never liked the Macromedia
interfaces. They just don't seem like they are well thought out. Or maybe I
am just bitter that Macromedia cancelled xRez and SoundEdit.

I have grown up with Adobe software and it just seems like it is the right
way to do things.

Maybe I will have another look at the MX series. I certainly like the idea

I have actually girded my loins (a painful experience in itself) and
used DreamWeaver MX for some serious work. After the first day's use
where everything was spinning beach balls. length waits and forced

Hi all,

It's the Apple manufactured 32meg Radeon card, designed to fit
into x4 AGP slot (not x2, ie. sawtooth), which is any G4 running at
466mhz and above. Cost is $150, you can email me if you're
interested.

Cheers,
