We spoke about this hoax in December, and here's a follow-up:

Just heard on NPR that authorities have arrested 6 guys in Africa
responsible for this scheme. About 2600 Americans fell victim to
it.

Thanks for the original heads-up, Murdoch!

2002-05-24 Thread Daniel Forsdyke
Hi guys

The last time I had the Diskwarrior shield flashing on screen, the
"pop-up" message was along the lines that Diskwarrior had found
something wrong with the CD. It will supposedly let you continue
usingthe CD until you try to do something that will damage your
computer. Supposedly!!

Hope that helps.

I believe it is signalling that some directory damage has occurred.
Presumably you don't actually want it appearing too often :-)

Give that man a cigar! (In fact I think he probably deserves a pay rise too
Rod!). From the illustration in the Disk Warrior manual, it is indeed the
black shield I saw.

Now if I can only get the thing to appear again I'll be able to find out
what Disk Warrior wants to warn me about!

You could presumably run the DW App and it'll tell you if something's wrong.

Hi Neil (and others)

After a quick search in the documentation I found something that refers to a
Black Shield flashing in the menu bar for DiskWarrior. (Page 25 of 92 from
the PDF Manual)

Perhaps DiskWarrior extension was trying to grab your attention, or there
was something wrong with the CD, or one of the CD archives. Or maybe it was
telling you that you were working too hard,...and it was warning you. :o) It
doesn't sound like too much of a stress though.

Hope that helps!!!

Kind Regards

Blinking black shield on apple menu icon?

2002-05-24 Thread Neil Blake & Associates
Hi WAMUGers

I¹ve got a curious one for you. This afternoon I inserted a CD from Digital
Photo magazine into my iMac and after it loaded (it took a while), I noticed
a black shield icon with a white exclamation mark in it blinking alternately
with the apple menu icon (in the same way as the remote access icon blinks
when I¹m online). I¹d never seen this before, but it looked like the Norton
Anti-Virus shield in silhouette, so I immediately scanned the CD for
viruses, but found none. I checked the NAV literature - it is not one of
the alert icons they use, and I found no explanation there. Having just
backed up I was feeling brave, so proceeded to use the CD without problems.

I¹ve since restarted the Mac and the black shield icon has disappeared and I
can¹t get it to reappear by reinserting the CD in question. Such
unexplained phenomena unsettles me a bit has anyone come across this
before? I¹ve searched the archive with no success.

Re: For ADSL/airport experts

2002-05-24 Thread Shay Telfer

Hi,

To cut it short, I found out the Telstra's dialup account doesn't seem to be
compatible with the old airport base station. The solution for me will be
change ISP, which turns out better in a LOT of ways. :-)

I haven't got the "privilege" to use ADSL since my phone lines doesn't
support ADSL (even though I live near the Cannington exchange), but maybe
there is a mail proxy setting hidden somehow in the documentations of
iPrimus. You will usually input this proxy settings in the Airport Admin
utility or in System Preferences, Network.

Of course another idea is test with other ISPs.

Well, except that there isn't such a thing as a Mail Proxy as far as
I'm aware, and there certainly isn't any setting for it in the base
station prefs.

It's more likely some problem with IP number mappings that Exchange
or the Telstra server is reacting to poorly.

I'd try a different Email POP client like Eudora or something and see
if that worked before I changed ISP.

[COMMERCIAL] Trade in your Beige or Blue and White G3 for a new G4!

2002-05-24 Thread Rod Lavington

Hi All!

If you have been working away with your Beige or Blue and White G3, thinking
how much better life would be with a new G4, well this is the time to
upgrade!

Apple are offering $600 trade in for your Beige G3 and $1200 for your Blue
and White G3, for a new G4. On top of that, if you are a financial WAMUG
member, we will also give you an extra $100 for your G3! So, if you traded
in your 350 Blue and White G3, a new 800 G4 will only cost you $2395! [1]
If you have an older G4, we are still doing trade-ins on those machines.

But that is not all that is on offer from Apple this month! Buy a 17" Apple
LCD display with your new G4, and Apple will give you $400 cash back.

Looking to make movies and DVDs? Purchase Final Cut Pro (full or upgrade)
and DVD Studio Pro with your G4, and Apple will also give you $600 cash
back.

Maybe design is more your forte. Apple are offering the Adobe Design
Collection with any Powermac or Powerbook for just $2029! That is a saving
of $900 off the retail price!

Why not get that iPod you have been wanting! Buy an iPod with any Mac, and
Apple will give you $200 cash back. [2]

So, if you decided to trade in your Blue and White G3, upgrade to FCP and
buy DVD Studio Pro, get a 17" LCD display, buy the Adobe Design Collection,
and purchase an iPod, you could save $3400! Bargain!

Maybe a laptop is what you have been waiting for. We have our ex-demo
Powerbook 667 up for sale. It is the previous model, and comes with 512meg
ram plus an Airport card. There is still 8 months left on the warranty.
$5000 and its yours!

Finally, we have a 21" Graphite Studio Display for sale. Nick has decided
to finally use an LCD display out back, so his ex-demo 21" display has to
go. He is looking for $1000 for this hard-to-find monitor.

Don't forget we still have the largest range of Mac games in Perth!

[1] Note that the machines must be in good condition, and have at least
their shipping specs (ie 233 G3 had 32meg and 4gig HD).

[2] All the cash back offers are mail-in rebates after your purchase.

Kindest regards

Mike, Nick, Daniel and Rod!

Re: For ADSL/airport experts

2002-05-24 Thread Justin Bearne
[Forwarded to the list as I think that's where it was meant to be
posted - Shay]

I've just set up a similar network with 2 airport equipped Macs linked to an
Airport (old model) and a third connected via an ethernet hub, which is in
turn connected to the ADSL modem. I even have a Windows XP box connected
wirelessly as well.

I had an Primus dial-up account before moving to a Primus ADSL account.
After setting up the ADSL account I got Primus to close down the dial up
account and then set up the same e-mail addresses under the ADSL account. I
haven't had to change anything in Entourage and all e-mailing and browsing
works fine. The airport base station set-up is the same as before except for
the username and password. Primus supplied proxy settings but I haven't
input them (not sure where I would) but everything works fine without it.

Many thanks for all the advise I received from various people on setting
this up.

Justin
