Re: Laser printer request

2002-09-02 Thread themenubar
I have found some of the OKI printers to be very good and as they are an LED
printer rather than a traditional laser printer they are much smaller and
lighter as well as being much cheaper to run. They do work on the same
principal but instead of having a laser to print with they use a row of LED
lights so they also not as dangerous when to use.

Kind regards,

Kris Flint.

Itunes BIG reorg OS9/OSX

2002-09-02 Thread Brett Carboni
Is this a good idea, or just asking for trouble?

I'm finally organising all my MP3's into iTunes. I have 15 Gb on my 40Gb OSX
partition (10.1.5) accessed by iTunes running on my main hard disk (20Gb)
which is the startup disk running OS9.2.

I have another 'lot' of MP3's (3.3Gb) in my users folder which is accessed
by iTunes 3 running (of course) OSX. And I'm going to continue to rip the
rest of my collection to add another 20 Gb at least, so I would like to know
now before I waste a lot of time.

I *could* put *all* the MP3's into music folder in my personal folder in the
user's folder on the 40Gb partition running OSX, (sounds like the Rolf
Harris song "the ladies in the harum of the court of King Caracatus").
Then iTunes2 could access them, and iTunes3 as well.

Is it me, or is this a risky thing to do. Should I keep them in a separate
folder on the OSX partition?

Please don't anybody say that I should go out and get 10.2. I still think
the GUI is a tad complicated, plus it's not stable or liveable for me yet.
(Maybe 10.2.1 or when I get a new Mac).

What exactly are you trying to connect, Peter? You don't give very

to use one or the other as a gateway onto the internet?

If it's just to do file sharing, then ADSL/Cable shouldn't make any difference.

If you're trying to share internet between them, then it would help
if you could tell us whether the individual parts are working. I
assume that your internet connection is working for one (or both?) of
the computers. Can they see each other over ethernet? ie. Can you
ping one from the other, and vice-versa?

With a bit more info, we might be able to track down what the problem is...

Hi Matthew,

Thanks for the offer to demo Jaguar. Wonder if it would be appropriate to
demo the use of Applescript with Jaguar? I guess that Jaguar is
Applescriptable and if so what can be done to make the computer more
efficient.

Many thanks and see you tomorrow.

Re: Burning cross platform data CDs/free HTML editors

2002-09-02 Thread Shay Telfer

So questions are:
1) Will a CD burned on my iMac in 'Standard (HFS+/ISO 9660) 666.8MB' format
be readable on a typical PC.

Should be. This assumes that the disk is properly burnt so that the
data is available in both formats. Normally I use Toast for this so
I'm not sure what Session Burner will do. You might want to check the
documentation to see if it supports long filenames (Joliet format).

2) Can I include folders (& folders in folders) or do I have to pull out
all the files individually and the re-file them on the PC

No, you can have folders on PC disks. It may be a problem with the
PC's at TAFE not correctly recognising the file names, but really
that should only be a problem if they're using a PC operating system
from pre-2000.

(BTW, in general, I've found PC users to be less knowledgeable about
Macs than Mac users are about PC's. I guess their lives are too busy
keeping their PC's working to get a chance to use a Mac :)

3) Is there a freeware/shareware equivalent to session burner that will let
me burn in several sessions that handles the PC ISO9660 format

Try VersionTracker

THE TAFE course CD includes frontpage express as a free webpage design/HTML
editor (and this is what we are using throughout the course) but this is a
PC program - is there a similar program I can use on the mac (again, the
TAFE guy didn't know about the mac) someone told me that frontpage used to
be a mac program also but that it was frozen at a very old version and only
revised for windows.

You could try to find a copy of Claris Home page, or try VersionTracker

I generate large digital video and QuickTime files but often exceed
the 2GB limit at which point, although the files are perfectly
useable, you cannot move or copy them.

You don't mention what version of the Mac OS you're using, or which
version of QuickTime. Modern versions of both support movies and
files over 2Gb in size.

Older applications may not take advantage of the 'new' (well, since
some years ago) API's in QuickTime for accessing movies larger than
2Gb.

Burning cross platform data CDs/free HTML editors

2002-09-02 Thread Neil Houghton
I'm just taking a short TAFE course on developing web pages - unfortunately
the TAFE equipment & software is totally PC based. This is not a problem
during the classes as I've had to use PCs often at work. The problem has
come when trying to transfer the project between TAFE and my home computers
(all macs!).

PROBLEM 1

The TAFE PCs don't have zip drives but do have CD readers and floppy drives.
My iMac has no floppy but has a superdrive so can burn CDs.

The iMac has no problem reading the TAFE CD supplied at the course but I
wanted to take various image and text files into TAFE to incorporate into my
webpage project. No problem, I thought, I'll burn them onto a CD and since
the files were relatively small I used CD session burner (which I'd seen in
the August Macworld 'Off the Net' feature). Unfortunately the PC can't read
the disc. The TAFE IT guys just say PCs won't read Mac discs! but having
used floppys and zip discs back and forth between macs & PCs for years, I
would hope that this is not the case. They also tut-tutted when I said the
files were in folders and said that I would not be able to see Mac folders &
would have to have all the files separate on the disc. Again this is not the
case for zips & floppies.. so why would it be for CDs. I know that for the
zips and floppies they had to be formatted for PCs and that the macs could
read both PC & Mac format but PCs could only read PC format. Having read the
session burner info, I suspect that this is the problem it burns the disc in
HFS format, which I presume is a Mac format. The TAFE guys say the CD has to
be in ISO 9660? which they say is the standard CD computer format.

This was the first CD I had ever burned, so I'm a complete novice in this
area - I presume that session burner is the wrong program to use but with
the built-in apple software the three options seem to be:
-Standard (HFS+/ISO 9660) 666.8MB
-MP3 CD (ISO 9660) 666.8MB
-iTunes (Audio) 79 Min.

Since the first two mention ISO 9660 can I presume that a PC will be able to
read them (the first for data and the second for MP3 files?)

If this is the case then I guess I can transfer info to the TAFE machine -
but use up a whole CD each time I have something to transfer.

So questions are:
1) Will a CD burned on my iMac in 'Standard (HFS+/ISO 9660) 666.8MB' format
be readable on a typical PC.
2) Can I include folders (& folders in folders) or do I have to pull out
all the files individually and the re-file them on the PC

Microsoft reveals security hole
Correspondents in New York
02 September 2002

MICROSOFT said recent versions of its Windows operating system contain a
"critical" security hole that an attacker could use to prevent some online
transactions.

In a security bulletin , the software
giant urged users of Windows 98, Millennium, NT 4.0, 2000 and XP to download
a software patch that fixes the flaw.

A successful attacker wouldn't be able to steal personal information or take
control of a victim's machine, said Lynn Terwoerds, security program manager
at the Microsoft Security Response Centre.

The flaw lies in a so-called ActiveX control used to prove that two parties
exchanging information on the internet are really who they claim to be.

An attacker would have to create and lure users to an infected web page or
send the page as an email. A mail-based attack won't work if the recipient
has the default security setting in Outlook Express 6 and Outlook 2002, or
in Outlook 98 and 2000 if the user has installed a previous security update.

Microsoft's Ms Terwoerds said the company discovered the flaw during its
internal security push, ordered by Bill Gates in January.

Russ Cooper, editor of NTBugtraq, an online clearinghouse for bugs in
Microsoft software, said the security hole was "not a big problem in and of
itself".

"What's troubling is that (Microsoft) has, in the last few days, had to
'kill' two of its ActiveX controls. This is a further demonstration of a
deep flaw in the underlying infrastructure," he said in an email interview.

On August 22, Microsoft revealed another security flaw in an ActiveX control
that can be used to take over a user's computer.

The only *RELIABLE* way I have found to copy these files (>2GB) over a
network is by upgrading to MacOS X at both ends, which handles large files
easily.

AppleShareIP doesn't like >2GB files.

FinalCutPro has a setting to output to <2GB files. It's under Preferences.

Not sure what else you actually do...

Re: Powerbook 170 - No Power

2002-09-02 Thread themenubar
The PowerBook 170 did come with an external Power Supply unfortunately you
can not purchase the power Adapter or the battery as new anymore so you are
best to take the battery to get it repacked some places can do this although
it can cost a fair bit up to $150.00

How have you been charging the battery if the PowerBook has no power input.
The only thing to do is to work out how much it will cost you to get it
running again and to see if it is worth spending the money on it. The most
you would get second hand for a PowerBook 170 now days is around $150.00 -
$200.00.
Try looking on eBay for second hand batteries for it. (www.ebay.com.au) look
in the computer section under Apple.
If you need anymore help please email me and I will help as much as I can.
