Help

2002-10-15 Thread Angus Sue Jordan Russell
Hi Everyone

Have a major problem here.

Lombard with 9.2.1 384 RAM 333Mhz

No juice in the battery, power cut. Computer closes down.

Clock resets to 1904.

Re-start, and takes over an hour to reboot.

SO force quit, re-boot with disk warrior - root creation date problem.

Re-start, force quit etc about 3 times, then run DW three times
consecutively.

Re-start extensions off to speed things up and try find error, no luck, on
re-start takes ages.

Force quit, run DW no problems show.

Restart zap PRAM. No difference

SO it takes 2 hours to start, and once up the apps run ok, a little slow, bu
they take ages to open or react to anything.

Any bright ideas welcome,

in desperation

If the clock is reset to 1904, lots of things get confused, and will
attempt to recreate files, and do other sorts of housekeeping chores
that otherwise wouldn't get done. You need to make sure that the
clock is correct, and then rebooting should be fine (after the first
reboot with the correct time when everything gets resynced).

Replacement PRAM batteries are listed at

ADSL pricing

2002-10-15 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hello all, I'm currently using iprimus as my isp for home 56K use.
However, I've now bought an ethernet ADSL modem and am looking

Any ISP recommendations and general ADSL warnings, as always, are

Re: Screen Capture When you Have Two Monitors

2002-10-15 Thread Greg Hosking
you'd have to give some specifics... machine, monitors, grafix card etc

I run 2 monitors on two different machines get both screens in the screen
shot. A more useful feature is command-shift-4 which gives you a little
cross-hair - you then draw a rectangle around the area you want to capture:
it still saves you a picture 1 file on your startup disk

This may work on your primary monitor

Greg

 Hello

Command/Shift - 3 takes an image of your screen. Every time I take a
shot, it takes one of the second monitor and not the primary monitor
(with the apple menu etc.). Is there any way to fix this?

 Thanks

Westnet.com.au offer 1Gb peak for $59/Month, fixed IP, after which
they charge per Mb, but their per Mb charge is less than most others
I could find. Off peak (midnight-7am) is unlimited.

In my first month I have yet to manage to download more than 40% of
the on-peak quota, but of course your usage may vary.

Westnet and Arachnet both offer unlimited downloads in their off peak
periods. Westnet are in the middle of a pipe upgrade to add more capacity.
If you go over your limit with them it's 6 cents a meg. 4 gig peak limit
before excess charges. Arachnet offer a 3 gig limit with shaping to 64k once
you exceed your download limit or the option to pay excess useage charges
and continue at full speed.

Westnet don't block any ports and don't distinguish between business and
home users. Their customer service is top notch and they are very
communicative about what's happening on their network.

Arachnet has some customer service complaints on Whirlpool but most people
agree that once you're up and running things are very smooth.

Disclaimer: I'm a Westnet customer for personal and business use and love
the service.

West net does not allow FTP or any other servers though do they?

Or have they changed that?

I could find nothing in their service agreement that prohibited that,
and I'm running a web server... They do prohibit you connecting
'machines not under your control', which would presumably prohibit
you reselling their connection as an ISP.

I run both a mail and web server on my Westnet connection 24/7. I told
Westnet that I'd be doing so with my own domain name before ever setting up
an account with them. They had no problems with me doing so. I also run FTP
and game servers when the need arises.

For everyone: If you have plans to run a mail server please do it
responsibly and don't set it up as an open relay. The ISP's that still allow
home and small business users to run mail servers are doing us a favor and
it's our responsibility to make sure we don't get them blacklisted by the
spam cops of the net.

Speaking of Westnet, Whirlpool, changes to networks, etc the
following thread is somewhat interesting.

http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=39469

specifically...

Quote Chris (Westnet Tech Staff) speaking about possible changes to
some Westnet plans:

We are looking at our options (but we've being doing that for a
while). We've got some ideas that leave unlimited off-peak in place,
and some that don't. Once we've made a decision on any changes that
we might make, we'll say something, but right now we've got no firm
plans, and it could be that everything stays the same. The obvious
risk is that all of iinet's heavy users jump ship to Westnet, and
kill what has been a comfortable network... and nobody wants that.

Thanks again. I think I'll sit tight till the end of the year and

comments I've received and the media, there may be quite a few

Re: Help

2002-10-15 Thread Shay Telfer

Still no difference, 3 hours to boot, when checking mail everything freezes,
MS Word takes about 20 minutes or longer to open a file (ok so it wasn't
exactly Speedy Gonzales in the first place, but not that slow), I haven't
risked opening anything else.

You need to boot with extensions off, and then determine which
extension it is that you're adding that is causing the 3 hour boot
time. You can do this by starting with the base extensions in the
extension control panel and gradually enabling more extensions,
rebooting each time.

Alternatively, what's displayed on the screen when the 3 hour wait
occurs? Which extension was the last to load before the wait?

Good luck,

This should work for most macs.
I've used dozens of multi-monitor macs and com/shift F4 worked on all of them.

Com/shift F3 seems to take a picture of the monitor with the apple

CD-RW on 7300

2002-10-15 Thread Adam Lippiatt

Hello

I have a 7300 and am thinking about replacing the CD-ROM drive with a
CD-RW. I would like to have all the functionality of the drive (ie.
CD-R and CD-RW) and am wondering if OS9.1 provides all of the
necessary software. I was advised that a drive I am considering
(with PC software only) but sold from Mac store, works just fine
with Disc Burner on an IDE PCI card. However, after downloading Disc
Burner, the installation software notes that it will not load on this
computer. I do have a Disc Burner extension already in my extension
folder.

Any tips on what I am needing to do to get full CD-RW functionality
with this drive I am considering?

Thanks.

Don't Upgrade

2002-10-15 Thread Karen
DON'T UPGRADE

Eighteen months ago I upgraded to Girlfriend 1.0 from Drinking Mates
4.2,
which I'd used for years without any trouble. However, there are
apparently
conflicts between these two products and the only solution was to try
and
run Girlfriend 1.0 with the sound turned off. To make matters worse,
Girlfriend 1.0 is also incompatible with several other applications,
such as
Lads Night Out 3.1, Football 2 and Playboy 6.1.

Successive versions of Girlfriend have proved no better. A shareware
beta-programme, Party Girl 2.1 had many bugs and left a virus in my
system,
forcing me to shut down completely for several weeks. Eventually I
tried to
run Girlfriend 1.2 and Girlfriend 1.0 at the same time, only to discover
that when these two systems detected each other they caused severe
damage to
all my hardware.

Sensing a way out, I upgraded to Fiance 1.0 only to discover that this
product has to be upgraded to Wife 1.0. I did this largely because,
whilst
Wife 1.0 uses up all available resources, it does come bundled with
FreeSex
Plus and Cleanhouse 2000. However, I discovered that Wife 1.0 can be
very
unstable and costly to run. For example, any mistakes I made were
automatically stored in Wife 1.0's memory and could not be deleted, they
then re-surfaced months later. Wife 1.0 also has an automatic Diary
Explorer
and E-mail porn filter, and can, without warning, launch Photostrop and
Whingezip.

These latter products have no help files and require you to try and
guess
the problem yourself. Additional costly problems are that the Wife 1.0
bundle that came with the original system needs updating regularly,
requiring Shoe Shop Browser Pro for new attachments and Hairstyle
Express
needs to be reinstalled every other week. It also conflicted with some
of
the new games I wanted to try, stating that they are an illegal
operation.

When Wife 1.0 attaches itself to my Ford programme it often crashes or
runs
the system dry. Wife 1.0 also has a rather annoying pop-up called
Mother-in-Law, which can't be turned off.

Recently I've been tempted to try Mistress 2000, but there could be
problemsif Wife 1.0 detects the presence of Mistress 2000 it will
delete
all MS Money files before un-installing itself.
