Apparently around $370 here in Perth. Methinks they are Seagate unless
mentioned otherwise. You could check out Zytech too, who give good service
(at least for me they did).

In lieu of running DiskWarrior (OS X version due any day now) you might
now (and on a regular basis) run MacJanitor (download at
versiontracker.com) and on completion repair your permissions in Apple
Disk Utility.

This suggestion is purely a good maintenance tip but it has fixed a
multitude of varied problems.

I'll put details on the list as soon as we have pricing and
availability on DiskWarrior 3.

Aside from saying 'use Eudora', you could try

Pasting the address list into something like BBEdit and turning on
'show invisibles', and looking for any abnormalities, or using zap
gremlins, and then pasting it back into Mail.

Or, try pasting half the list in and see you can send mail to that,
then the same with the second half and repeat the process until
you've reduced the list to a point of discovering the problem.

You could also use something like Interarchy's traffic monitoring,
(or any number of packet sniffing tools) to watch the SMTP session
and see what Mail is actually sending to the SMTP server, but that's
probably a bit excessive.

Group emailing problem

2003-02-18 Thread Jim Cummins
I'm having problems setting up student mailing lists on Apple Mail
1.2.3 (OSX). I input the email addresses in the "To: field as text
strings separated by commas and a space, but I get an error message
saying that the SMPT server (at Murdoch) does not recognize the email
addresses. The same string copied into Outlook Express seems to work.
Yes, I've tried separating the fields as <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>,
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, etc but this also bounces.

Looking at other groups I've set up using the more conventional way of
creating a series of mailbox entries and then dragging them one-by-one
to a group the format appears to be Name 1 <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, Name 2
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]> etc. but I wonder if there's some hidden text I'm not
seeing?

My version of iMovie (2.0.3) won't import .avi (though I may be able to find
a graphic converter export that iMovie would import) and nowhere in any menu
or iMovie help could I find 'rotate' or 'orientation'. Are these features
that have been introduced into later versions of iMovie?

Hmmm no rotate buttons here.

So, if I understand correctly, I need to purchase Quickime Pro and this
includes the extra tools which will let me rotate my movie. The apple
Australia site says this cost $60 but doesn't mention rotation as a feature
- can I be confident that if I shell out $60 it will do what I want? There
doesn't seem to be a limited trial option?

Many thanks to Greg & Shay for such quick feedback.

So...is there any easy way to turn my movie on it's side? (other than
putting the monitor on it's side, before anyone suggests it!!)

Options include
* Exporting every frame, rotating them all and re-importing them :)

* Use a high-end video tool to rotate the movie (ie Commotion, Adobe
AfterEffects, etc.)

* Using QuickTime player to insert a rotate effect into the start of
the movie. You could then either export the movie to another movie to
get a rotated movie, or just leave as it is (which will require a bit
higher processor load during playback and be less portable to
non-Quicktime aware movie players).

Go to Movie->Get Movie Properties
Select the appropriate movie track
Select 'Size' from the popup on the right top of the movie properties dialog
Hit one of the rotate buttons.
You can then re-export the movie if you want.

You may need to register QuickTime Player to do this, but it's worth
every cent.

Movie files-orientation rotation

2003-02-18 Thread Neil Houghton
I'm just getting to grips with my new digital camera (Canon S45) and I'm
quite impressed with it's movie feature. My 32Mb CF card only gives me a
1m48s movie @ 320x240 resolution (but I can always save up for a bigger
card!) Now this would never compete with a video camera for real video but
seems to do a passable Quicktime movie for possible web use.

But to the point!

I was used to using the camera in both portrait and landscape orientation
for stills work and (not thinking!) shot some video with the camera in
portrait orientationsome quite useful footage that it would not be
possible to shoot again.

Now although it is very simple to rotate a still image by 90° in most image
viewing/editing programs, so far I can't find out how to do it for the
movie. I realise that the 320x240 original corresponds to a standard 4:3
aspect ratio but I would be quite happy with a 240x320 tall & thin viewing
window and, given that the video is basically just a succession of still
images shown one after the other, I can't see why it shouldn't be fairly
simple to rotate each frame by 90° and therefore put the movie the right way
up.

Software currently at my disposal includes: Arcsoft videoimpressions (ships
with camera) Adobe photoshop elements (version 1) Graphic converter (version
4.4) and of course quicktime & iMovie that came with my mac.

Camera produces movies in .avi format which can be opened by
videoimpressions, quicktime and graphic converter. I also seem to have the
option from videoimpressions and graphic converter to save in other formats
(more than I can possibly comprehend in the case of
graphic converter!!)

So...is there any easy way to turn my movie on it's side? (other than
putting the monitor on it's side, before anyone suggests it!!)

Hi Craig,

Firstly, to the best of my knowledge, all Titanium Powerbooks are G4 not G3
(though wiser heads may correct me!)
My 400MHz G4 Ti powerbook is one of the earlier models and the manual say
that the monitor port "allows you to directly connect a monitor with a VGA
style adaptor or other external video device such as a video projector."
[ie no additional card is required]

You also have an S-video out port to connect to a TV or VCR.

The manual also notes that: "When an external monitor or television is
connected, you can either have the same image appear on both the internal
display and the external monitor (known as video mirroring) or use the
external monitor to extend the size of the Mac OS desktop (known as extended
desktop mode)."

Have fun.

Changing regions & error -70001

2003-02-18 Thread Jason Muirhead
Hey

I've got a 867 G4 (Aug 2001) with superdrive (A03) running 10.2.3 (with
the superdrive firmware update) when the problem started & recently
upgraded to 10.2.4 and the problem persists. I've used 4 of the 5 region
changes allowable on my superdrive (I think these were all prior to the
superdrive firmware update). I want to change it to region 4 for
permanent use. When inserting a R4 dvd I get the region change window
saying this is the last change. But when selecting R4 and clicking OK I
get an error -70001. Leaving me stuck with a region 1 superdrive and
only one region 1 dvd.

Be aware, though, that this is a development release and as such comes
as source code only, not a .dmg containing an installer package. You
will need to install it under UNIX in Terminal. Double-click the README
file for instructions. If this worries you, you might be better waiting
for the final version.

This also explains why 4.2.5 is still listed as the latest version on
the main page.

You could also try the shareware utility "Macaroni". This runs routine
UNIX housekeeping chores at scheduled times, which in itself is good
for keeping your system happy, and it also regularly runs Disk
Utility's Repair Permissions routines. You also get a full log of what
it has done. Might help if you can't fix the problem any other way.

Mac because I prefer it -- Windows because I have to.
