'black' screen of death?

2003-05-07 Thread Toby Oldham

HI guys and gals, I was hoping someone might once again do some shedding of
light.

I was all ready to take my Special edition 'grey' Clamshell ibook to [insert
shameless
plug for small screen BIG PICTURE TV conference, 7-9th May, Rendevous Hotel,
Observation City] ... a conference. I plan to take to take some digital
snapshots and
offer the other staff members the laptop to use for notetaking.

The ibook is running 10.2.3, but I figured 'what the hell', and attemtped to
upgrade it
to 10.2.6 (the ibook is running the latest firmware -v4.17- as far as I know).

I _should_ have left the unbroken wheel well enough alone.

First, software update crapped out attemtping to download the 10.2.6 combo
update
to the desktop - twice.

Then the installer application on the 10.2.4 combo update 'unexpectedly quit'
three
times when I tried to run it. By this point, I'm wondering what's wrong with
the ibook
(having just successfully 'software update' downloaded and installed 10.2.6 on
a
700Mhz ibook next door).

I pull out my 10.2 CD's and wipe the Hard-disk, 'zero-ing' all the data and
attempt to
doa clean install of 10.2.

About a third of the way through the first CD it happens. the screen goes black
and
some DOS-like, UNIX terminal-ly text comes up, telling me I've got a 'Data
error [0]'
and I should restart the computer.

...

So, any ideas? I'd like to know what went wrong with my machine in the first
place,
then what I did to it :-}

I figure it can't be co-incidence that I 'zeroed all data' and am now getting a
'Data
Error [0]' message ...

Cheers,

Tobes.

P.S. I verfied the disk a couple of times also during and after the process,
seemed
fine.

Re: Computer Furniture.

2003-05-07 Thread Kelly Duffy
IKEA and Freedom Furniture have the best computer desks in a modular sense.
They look decent, they are easy to assemble, they pull apart just as easily,
they're good value and there is a wide range. And you see them all with old
iMacs on them when you walk around IKEA.

However, if you want a more expensive, real timber desk, like solid Jarrah
they don't have much. There is a place in Perth that does custom designed
and built furniture, if someone could tell me what its called it would be
appreciated.

Kind regards,
Kelly

Nikon F60 SLR Camera

2003-05-07 Thread Stephen Chape
Hi folks,

I have decided to make the jump to a digital camera, but can only afford to
do so by selling my SLR 35mm.

If anyone is interested drop me a line at this email address.

It is a Nikon F60 with 28 - 80mm Nikor Lens.
I bought it about 18 months ago to replace my instant compact, but have
found that it is more than I can handle. Consequently it has not been used
very much.

It is going in the Quokka this week for $600 so make an offer if you wish.

Re: AAC music compression

2003-05-07 Thread Dark Servant
That's a very interesting article Peter. Well the sound quality isn't
really any different and the extra disk space isn't an issue either so
I guess I'll just keep using my non-DRM MP3 technology.

Ruben. A. Franke

There was some discussion at last night's meeting about the reason for
Apple's use of AAC instead of MP3 for its Music Store offerings. This
little snippet from the latest issue of Tidbits offers some more
information...

--

real. The reason the iTunes Music Store exists at all is because
Apple is using AAC files that include digital rights management
(DRM) technology. Without including some sort of DRM, Apple would
have stood an igloo's chance in Florida of working out a deal
to license songs from the major record labels. AAC isn't about
digital rights management; it really is aimed at doing a better
job - both in terms of compression and quality - than the MP3
format. But Apple's implementation of AAC also provides hooks
for digital rights management that prevents casual copying.

Songs you purchase are protected using your iTunes Music Store
authorization information. Any copy of iTunes (or any other
appropriately QuickTime 6.2.2-savvy software - QuickTime Player
works now) must know your authorization information to play the
song. Plus, if you view iTunes' Get Info window for a song you've
purchased, you'll see that it includes your name and email
address. That alone is likely to cut down on copying, since many
people would be uncomfortable distributing tracks that listed
them as the instigator. And of course, it would be extremely easy
for the RIAA's hordes of slavering lawyers to come after you
(something they've been doing with increasing frequency to college
students they allege are sharing large numbers of music files).
The traditional dodge of providing a false name and email address
will be more difficult to implement since the information comes
from your Apple 1-Click account.
--

The article goes to explain how Apple uses DRM to impose certain
restrictions on how how Macs can be used at a time to play a song, the
number times a song can be burnt to CD before changing the playlist,
Rendezvous sharing, and the limitation of playing purchased music only
on a Mac or an iPod (for the time being, at least).

filemaker pro calendar solution?

2003-05-07 Thread John Reed
hi folks

I'm using filemaker pro 6 and osX 10.2.3

I'm looking for a comprehensive calendar that gives me daily entry ,
weekly, monthly and yearly summary (yearly as in columns of months to
print off wall chart summaries). I want to integrate it with other
filemaker pro databases for organising projects. It seems that
calendar monster used to be the answer but that seems to be untraceable
after filemaker 4. CC calendar from Clevelandconsulting.com looks good
but doesn't have a yearly view. Skedpro and Appt1.0v7 FM5 look a bit
clunky.

ical looks good but isn't filemaker pro and doesn't have a yearly view.

Does anyone know any solutions and are there any workarounds to
integrate existing calendars (eg entourage, ical) with filemaker pro?

thanks in advance

ICQ failure

I've tried rebooting the computer, reinstalling ICQ, renaming some of the

Has anyone seen this before, or can point me to a troubleshooting page - my
google search came up with one page about some obscure bug that was fixed in

Running on an iMac 400MHz, with OSX 10.1.5

back in iinet adsl-land - "where plasticine flowers eat marshmallow pies"

After trying every possible mtu rate that iinet tech support could think of
I was informed that they really don't know what to do about it. Apparently,
"the fault is with telstra and may take up to 3 months to fix properly if
you can be patient" and, interestingly, when I suggested going to another
ISP: "Oh, you won't get this problem with other ISP's Sir!" (I don't think
he was supposed to say that!)

Excuse paraphrasing for brevity (the actual conversation was about an hour):

Me: So you're saying it'll be another few months maybe before this works
properly?

iinet: yes, Sir, but we're working on a band-aid style fix which should be
ready in a couple of weeks...

Me: So I just use my dial-up until you've got it figured?

iinet: yes sir, and I'm prepared to offer you a full MONTH off your adsl
bill

me: From when exactly? From when the adsl starts working properly?

iinet: No Sir, from when you signed up with us 2 weeks ago...

me: But I don't have adsl yet...so if you don't figure out a fix for this
then I'm paying for adsl despite the fact that you haven't supplied it?

iinet: Sir, you have an adsl connection, it's just not working like you
want it to - can't you live with having to click all URL's twice - it's just
a minor problem..

me: and the fact that my browser hangs all the time because it can't
recieve packets isn't a problem?

iinet: Well, you do have a connection, sir

me: so, perhaps everytime I want to use my chat client you're suggesting I
disconnect from adsl, dial up, chat, disconnect, then reconnect to adsl to
browse the web etc, so you can bill me?

iinet: let me talk to my supervisor for a moment

iinet: sir, I've been authorised to refund you the full cost of your 3
months adsl...

me: ...and the $100 set up fee?

iinet: Sorry, Sir, that money was paid to telstra - we can't refund that

me: but I'm not in business with telstra, you guys are...seems to me you
should be having a word with telstra

iinet: Well, you do have an internet connection, sir

me: yes, but I'm paying for an internet SERVICE, and I don't have one of
those...

iinet: I'm sorry, I definitely can't refund you with the $100 from telstra

me: Then you need to put me through to someone who can..

iinet: Sir, I do apologise, my supervisor has authorised me to refund you
the $100 set up also...

me: Apology accepted...(sort of)

Off to find another adsl supplier ;-)

Hi Ken,

If you're looking for value for money I don't think you can beat auctions
that involve office furniture. One of the better auction sites is Smith
Broughton out at Midland. They hold such auctions roughly every 2 weeks,
usually on a Tuesday morning. Their next one is next week, I think. Look in

If you're not familiar with such auctions you probably won't believe how
cheap you can get quality desks for.

Apart from Officeworks and Furniture spot (which is quite cheap)
there is quite a good place on Scarborough Beach Road, just down from

Re: PDFs from OSX to PCs

2003-05-07 Thread Shay Telfer

Using the Print Centre facility in OSX with Appleworks I have saved a
document as a pdf file and sent it as an attachment to an email from
Eudora to a person running Office 2000 on a PC. He has to open it
first before he can save it. To me this seems appropriate BUT if I
send it as an attachment through the mail facility at my ISP he can
save the document and open it later. I thought my version of Eudora
might be the problem so I upgraded, and the same occurs.

Could someone who is across both platforms offer an explanation, please.
Merv

Your ISP's web e-mail probably sends the document as HTML e-mail with
the PDF embedded in it, whereas Eudora probably sends it as a MIME
attachment, hence why the PC browser responds differently. To get
this behaviour in Eudora you could try creating an HTML e-mail
message (blecch) and dropping the PDF document into the body of the
message.

Re: PDFs from OSX to PCs

Merv

I can't fully grasp what you mean by the difference of sending the
file as an attachment to an e-mail and sending it as an attachment
through your mail facility.

Receiving a file attachments on a PC is pretty much the same as a
Mac and you should be able to save the file without opening it.
There is however a security option on Windows PC Outlook Express
which if checked prevents attached files being opened and saved
that could be a potential virus.

A couple of things you also need to do when sending a file to a PC
user is to make sure it has a suffix on the end which in this case
is .pdf, the other thing is to make sure that you have the method
of encoding is set at "Apple Double" (MIME).

If you still have problems send me more exact information and I
will help you out the best I can.

Fonts in OSX

2003-05-07 Thread Severin Crisp
In OS9 there is a considerable speed advantage to be gained from
slimming down the fonts collection. In OSX I seem to have a huge
font collection including Oriental characters which display as some
default western font (as seen in WordX [carbon] font list). In a
Cocoa font list panel a in Text Edit they do not show up in the same
way. Are these unwanted fonts gumming up the works or do they just
sit idle in the background?
I am aware of the different places that fonts are stored and the
limitations on manipulating them but would hapily toss out some of
the debris.

Advice please

Ok

When I type and press return I get an orange screen and a message

No further progress and I have to press the restart button.

If I type shut-down it does but the problem reoccurs on restart. I find that
