Re: CD burning - formats/volumes

2003-07-27 Thread Ryan Jay Schotte
If what you want is an exact backup duplicate of a CD, try using Disc Copy:
"File -> New -> Image From Device", and then burning the image again with
Disc Copy. It will definitely copy PC data volumes along with the Mac ones,
just by having one volume dropped onto the main window.

I'm not sure however that it will copy the audio usefully as well... Making
a Disc Copy image of an audio CD seems to produce a Mac OS Extended volume
with a bunch of AIFFs on it, which may or may not function properly when
burnt back to a CD. Let us know if you try this and it works though --
leaving expensive CDs lying around isn't a good idea, and this may be a
quick cheap backup option.

Failing all of this, Roxio probably sells something
you can use.

never burn an AUDIO CD on a higher speed than the realtime length- well, on
older machines. I am sure this is not the case as with the latest G4s

2003-07-27 Thread David de la Hunty
A bit more information on the computer would help, eg HDD, RAM, burner
etc. If it's just speed you want you'd be surprised how much an extra
quarter gig of ram can kick the pants of some of the early machines. I
run Jaguar on a 266 beige g3 (I kid you not) and as an office machine
it copes comfortably. All I did was put lots of Ram in (total over 400
meg). Given the cost of ram it seemed a sensible investment which has
kept the machine in good service at my office. My 333 bronze also runs
it, less ram but still great for general use, internet, photography
without complex stuff (ie Photoshop).

Having said that I have never traded up a computer, they just get added
to the gaggle. It is sometimes good to have a machine, for example,
which can still read a "floppy"...

If you do not have a superdrive, it will not work, even if it was installed
on your machine. It looks to see if you have a superdrive before it will
start.

No, iDVD is creation software, rather than pulling clips from DVDs already
created. If you are looking at saving clips from legal DVDs, then maybe you
can hook up your DVD player to a DV camera that has analogue playthrough, or
an analogue to DV converter box. Then you can capture the clips via iMovie.

I'm sure there is software on the net that can extract footage from DVDs,
but due to their dubious nature I can't tell you what they are :-)

IDVD

2003-07-27 Thread Angus Russell
Hello

Would I be correct in assuming that iDVD was included as part of 10.2?

Or was it added in one of my upgrades to 10.2.6?

I seem to remember that I did have iDVD and that I have deleted it at some
stage (in my ignorance) since my laptop does not have a DVD burner - not
realising that iDVD offered other services as well.

However, I now desire to extract some clips from a DVD that I am playing so
that I can use them on my website - it is all legal :-), and I suspect that
I can do this with iDVD.

If so, can I reinstall it from the 10.2 install Disc 2 with the
additionalapplications.pkg?

It appears as though this will reinstall iMovie, iPhoto, iTunes, Acrobat
Reader, iCal, and iSync, so I will need to re-update these as a consequence.
(This could well be the last time I delete any apps.)

Would most appreciate if someone (with more knowledge & experience than I)
could confirm my deductions or otherwise put me right.

Many thanks

Angus

Wanted: IDE drive card for B/W G3

Does anyone have for sale a card that will allow me to install extra IDE hard
drives in my Power Macintosh G3 (Blue and White) computer? I have the early
model B/W G3 that does not support slave drives running off the built-in IDE
sockets. Both those sockets are in current use for the original hard disk, and
the CD drive. Note that the card must work under system 10.2

Please rely off list.

CD burning - formats/volumes

2003-07-27 Thread Neil Houghton
Hi,

Hope someone can can point me in the right direction here - I'm sure it's
easy but it's eluding me!!

Hardware: 800MHz G4 iMac (15" flatpanel) with superdrive, running OSX
10.1.5.

I've burned data CDs as either:

a) Multisession Mac HFS+ sessions using CD Session Burner
b) Single HFS+/ISO 9660 sessions using Apple's inbuilt burner software

I haven't yet tried burning an audio CD but presume I would use the "iTunes
(Audio) 79 Min" option.

I'm wanting to copy an audio CD with extras (Paul Simon's Graceland). When I
load the CD it mounts as two volumes:
1) "Audio CD" containing (naturally) the audio tracks
2) "Simon" containing the extras
(multimedia application, quicktime, readme, etc)

Info tells me that "Audio CD" is (not surprisingly) "Audio CD" format while
"Simon" is "Mac OS Standard" format. I presume that there is also a
volume/folder containing the windows version of the multimedia program
though this does not show up on my computer.

My present level of knowledge/experience suggests I could:
1) Prepare a CD in "iTunes (Audio) 79 Min" format and burn the audio tracks
on that.
2) Prepare another CD in "Standard (HFS+/ISO 9660) 666.8MB" format and burn
the contents of Volume "Simon" on that.

However, what I really want is a duplicate of the existing CD with audio,
Mac format extras & PC format extras all on the one CD.

My questions are:

1) Can this be done with my existing hardware and native apple software.
2) If not, can this be done with 3rd party software (preferably
freeware/shareware!)
3) How would I do it?
4) How can I see the PC specific software/files on the CD. Browsing hidden
files (using BBedit lite) shows hidden file on the two volumes but none of
these are PC programs. I presume that the PC software/file would be on
another volume, but that this volume is hidden on my iMac? If so how can I
see it.

TIA

Neil

Drag the server volume to the trash. This will disconnect it and you'll
be happy. Of course if you put your iMac to sleep, it will also
disconnect, but if you're running software off the server drive, that
will stop your computer from sleeping, or dragging it to the trash -
same goes for a document that is open.

This says it all. It's quite a feat for a player to last that long,
given that the laser is the first thing to go, right before the
mechanical parts - generally the eject.

> I am using Toast Titanium to burn the CD. Is there a setting that
> will cure this problem?

No, the only likely cure is to purchase a new player. The reason I say
this is that when you burn a CDrom, it's not the same as paying a
commercial CD. While many players will play both standards, we're really
talking about two formats - albeit very similar.

I'd look on google for "CD burning FAQ" and see what documentation is
out there...

Disconnecting from server

2003-07-27 Thread Mervyn & Giuliana Bond
My iMac running OS X10.2 connects via ethernet and TCP/IP to my old
Performa 6400, the latter acting as server.

To access the Performa with the iMac I use the 'Connect to server'
from the Go menu.

What is the 'best practice' in terms of disconnecting the iMac from
the server when I no longer want to use that facility but I don't
want to shut down the server?

Suggestions please.
