 Sounds like Cannington.

Disappointing, eh :-( Now with Apple pushing the DJ stuff, there is little
hope for that store.

I didn't mean the current one inside Abacus, Rod. I haven't been in
there - in fact I had forgotten about it. I was referring to the four
times I visited the Cannington store you were in, when you were kind
enough to order items in for me each time because you had *no stock*.
Not suggesting that it was your fault - just saying that from a
customer's point of view a shop without much stock is pretty
pointless. Might as well save travelling time and petrol going to the
shop and mail order instead.

Response to earlier posting this year about WA AppleCentres

2003-11-25 Thread Rod Lavington

Hi All!

Just thought I would share my findings with you all from my recent trip to
Melbourne.

I think we bag the WA stores a little too harshly compared to what I saw in
Melbourne. I went to the Elizabeth St store in the CBD (NextByte), the
Flinders St store (MyMac) and the Bridge Rd store in Richmond (NextByte).
The MyMac store was well laid out, in the current Apple look-of-the-week :-)
They had a decent range of goodies and were presented well. The other two
stores left a lot to be desired :-( Although one of them had only recently
opened (Bridge Rd), they both had little stock and looked like a dogs
breakfast. The Elizabeth St store is probably the closest to the shopping
centre of the CBD (Bourke and Collins St), and only a stones throw from
RMIT. The store had little third party stock and display, and a small range
at that. The Bridge Rd store had the laptops underneath plastic enclosures,
so there was no way you could play with them. And both stores had the
classic 'desktop' screensaver running ;-) (just sitting idly on the
desktop). All the while the staff were nowhere to be seen. All this from
Australia's largest and most awarded Apple chain :-(

I hope this is not a sign of things to come with AppleCentres across
Australia. This is the time to really start hammering home how much better
a Mac is, but if you can't buy anything else for your Mac, what is the
point??

So we may bitch and moan about the AppleCentres here in Perth, but I think
we have it better than you might like to believe. A couple of the
AppleCentres here easily had twice the amount of stock (and range), have
helpful staff and have presentable stores. Furthermore, there are a number
of smaller guys that really go out of their way to make your Mac experience
that much better.

Now that I no longer work for an AppleCentre, it has been great just to sit
back and look from a customer's perspective on buying an Apple. Knowing
what supply problems the resellers also go through, I think we have it
better than previously thought!

I'd be interested to hear what other people think, especially those who have
been over east (and sorry David Choy, I didn't get to check out Chadstone!)

Seeya

Rod!
PS And no AppleCentre put me up to this :-)

Missing Apple Flyers

2003-11-25 Thread Karl Videmanis

Hi all

I saw some posts on the wamug list about people who's newspapers last
Thursday (Nov 20th) either didn't have the Apple flyer in it, or had
multiple copies.

I need to feed this info back to our agency. If this happened to you,
could you email me the following.

you purchased with the surplus (or missing) inserts. That letter can be
found on the back page in a red box, near the barcode. >>>

Thanks

Free 6100 with AV Monitor

2003-11-25 Thread Stuart Elvish

Hello everybody,

I have a free 6100 with audiovisual monitor (I think it is a 12 inch
tube) for the taking. The computer has no hard drive or operating
system however it does come with a CD-ROM drive and a floppy disk drive.

Please contact me off list if you are interested in obtaining it. It is
in good working condition, I presently use it to play CD's - shifting
to a new house with very little space so some things have to go :-(.

Kind Regards
Stuart

To those who put their dibs in and have not as yet been told by me
when they can pick up their goodies please hold fire I haven't
forgotten you.

I'm currently rushing around like the proverbial and will be on leave
for the next week and a bit.

When I come back I'll format/reinstall the Hard drives & OS's and
e-mail you as to when you want it picked up.

As a bit of a sweetener to those people who've waited there will be
some extra Apple accessories and goodies they can have first dibs at.

Ha! I actually updated the web site this time.

http://www.wamug.org.au

Demos will include all the cool iTunes visualizers and CPU hogging
screen savers versiontracker can find. Daniel from MacWizardry will
probably give something away as he usually does. For the Grand Finale,
Chris from Digilife will be bringing along a 20" iMac to you all to
ogle and drool over. (I will be providing tissues to wipe off said
drool.)

Panther

2003-11-25 Thread Adam Hewitt
Hi All,

I have read a lot about the performance increase of Panther over Jaguar and
that people have recommended doing a fresh install. I was wondering if
anyone has done an install over Jaguar and then a fresh install to see the
difference in performance gains? I installed over Jaguar last night and
although there are some really cool functions in Panther such as Expose, I
haven't really noticed a performance gain, so I am going to do a fresh
install today and I will let you know...

Adam.

Re: Virtula PC 6: Re-assign Drive C: ?

2003-11-25 Thread Peter Hinchliffe

On 24/11/2003, at 11:19 AM, Douglas Sheerer wrote:

I'm using Virtual PC 6 under OSX 10.2.8. I have two drives configured:

Drive C: (with Windows 98 SE installed - total Size 520 mb))
Drive D: (with various software installed - Total size 5 gb)

I have run out of space on Drive C: as I originally naively configured
it to just 520 mb in size.

Can I install Windows 98 SE on Drive D: and then convert that drive to
Drive C: ?
And if so do I do it from the booted Windows environment or can I do
it externally ?
I could then dispense with the old virtual Drive C: and have as much
extra space as I need.

Advice much appreciated. (I know that drives can be configured to
expand but I understand this is only possible up to the original size
limit fixed on installation) I don't want to have to re-install
everything if possible.

Why not just create a new VP6 configuration, using a fresh disk image
as Drive C: ? You can re-assign your Dirve D: to this configuration and
delete the old C: Image once everything is working.
