Re: (HELP) M$ Office Weirdness

2004-01-05 Thread Rob Findlay
A good way to start troubleshooting something like this in OSX is to make a
new user then log in as that user and try using the program. If it works for
the new user then you know that it is something in your home folder causing
this problem. My guess would be that it is your Entourage identity as I have
seen this a fair bit. I think all of the applications in the Office suite
access the identity so they can insert address's and link common data
between the applications. You can safely remove the identity inside your
documents/microsoft user data folder if that turns out to be the problem.
You will lose your address book but I guess you're using another email
client anyway.

All my other Apple and other software work fine.

I have trashed M$ prefs in my Library folder copious times hoping for a fix,
none is available. I have updated my operating system with all available
updates--didn't work. I have attemoted to restart my computer many times in

I'd be grateful for advice on the following problem.

i have a small home network made up of:

- a G3 running 8.6
- two imacs running 9.2
- an Ethernet switch
- a Xerox laser printer.

The printer is currently connected to the G3 and prints fine.

I can see all three of the computers in the Choosers, and can mount
the HDs

on the desktops as desired.

I understand there is a method of sharing the printer between the three
computers so that all can print. It's not an Ethernet printer though.

Is this possible, and if so, how is it done?

Tom

Yes, it is possible, but a few conditions need to be met (of course).
First, all computers need to be running at least MacOS 9.0. Second, the
printer you want to share must connect to the host computer via USB (in
the absence of ethernet, as in your case). You then go to the USB
Printer Sharing Control Panel. If all is working properly the process
of networking the printer should be fairly straightforward.

Failing these conditions, there are other, more elaborate solutions
involving printer servers, laserwriter bridges, Appletalk bridges, etc.

I have found that using the disk utility to repair permissions often solves
many weird problems. I'm not sure I recall this particular sort of problem
but I have had plenty of others like not being able to drag and drop and
menus not working. It may be a case of M$ updaters changing permissions and
not getting it right - especially as the updaters were written for 10.1.x
and 10.2.x.

Certainly worth a try.

Cheers and good luck

Indeed. I have the tools to open such cases easily, but generally choose
not to. I'll let those who know how to safely discharge monitors work on

Virtual PC 6.1

Trying unsuccessfully to load above onto the mac. Using Dual 1,25 G4
with 1.7 G of RAM and continue to get the following error message
whenever I try to create a new PC.

OS not found.
Install OS on this hard drive.

However, there is no command prompt to allow typing of instructions,
nor do windows shortcut keys work in the window.

Have tried M$ website but that is only useful if you have bought the
full version with the OS included. Have tried loading full versions of
Win 98 SE, ME, and XP with the same result.

Reason I need this is to run M$ Access as this has the last 7 years of
data for thesis I am writing and can't afford the time to re-enter the
information.

Any thoughts would be gleefully entertained.

Thanks in advance.

(Was) Office Weirdness (Now) Extracting Old Messages

2004-01-05 Thread Nathalie
Hello All:

Just a note to say thanks for all responses and here is what worked:

1. I created another user and attempted to open the Office programs from
there. They opened. Therefore it was most likely to be my Identity in office
which is accessed by all office programs.

2, I deleted the identity in my profile and the programs worked.

I was able to re-import my address book and calendar items as I had the
foresight (gained from years of making mistakes) to back up my data before
coming on this trip.

However...

The back up I made of my messages (my database within my identity) still
doesn't work when I try to open it with Entourage (or when I try to import
that file into other email clients, like Mail). I didn't realise this would be
an issue. When backing up I should have saved each message as it's own
file--outside of the email client, but I did not.

Any ideas about how I can extract my messages from this 120 MB Database file
which seems to be corrupted?

If I can't do it I will have to live with the loss, but I would rather not.

Nathalie
