Panther and classic

2004-05-01 Thread Angus Russell
Hiya

I just had to perform a clean install with Panther and have updated to
10.3.3, and now find that I have no classic system files.

Can someone tell me how to rectify this problem please? I tried my classic
install disk but said I could not install other than with a clean install.

The main reason is that I need to run vpc to operate some proprietary
banking software, and since I have upgraded vpc 5 is incredibly slow, so I
though I would go back to running vpc 3 in classic. Which is when I found
that I do not have the classic system files.

Any assistance greatly appreciated, many thanks

Angus

MPEG to iMovie?

2004-05-01 Thread Mrs C
Hi All:

A work event was professionally filmed and burned to DVD, saved as an
unencrypted MPEG file.

My work owns copyright to this very short film.

I wanted to edit it to make it a bit shorter, but when attempt to import it
from the DVD into iMovie iMovie rejects it because it "can't be rastarised".
I tried to check iMovie documentation regarding this but couldn't find
any--iMovie docs seem to just address using a camera as the source--not an
MPEG file.

I am running 10.3. On a powerbook G4 17" machine.

Any comments would be appreciated.

Regards,
N.

Ouch. Sounds like your technique could do with some improvement ;-)

Has Your iBook Screen Ever Been Scratched By The Keyboard?

2004-05-01 Thread Richard Kay
Anyone out there using an iBook in the 'Ice Book' form factor (i.e.
white polycarbonate version) with scratches on the screen as a result
of the screen RUBBING against the keyboard during transit?

I'm upgrading to a new 12" iBook G4, and want to know whether I REALLY
need to keep a Chux SuperWipe or piece of paper between the screen and
the keyboard during transit to prevent scratching.

I adopted this practice with my current (soon to be retired) 14" iBook
G3 (700MHz) when I first got it in response to user reports at the time
(circa 2002) about a problem between the clearances between the screen
and the keyboard, and the potential for permanent damage to the screen
as a result of the keyboard rubbing against the screen during transit.

I only adopted the practice because I was leasing the machine and had
to return it in good condition ... and would prefer to drop it if it is
not ABSOLUTELY necessary.

Carrying a Chux or a piece of paper everywhere you go and inserting it
between the screen and the keyboard everytime you close the screen is a
pain in the bum!

Re: "home" laser printer recommendation.

2004-05-01 Thread Paul Mulroney

Does anybody have a recommendation (or from the retailers on list - a
quote) for a small home laser printer

I personally recommend Brother, I have one here in my home office that
has replaced an HP 4L,

I chose a HL 1440 as it has a high capacity toner unit (6000 standard
A4
pages for ~$119) and the drum does ~ 20,000 pages for ~$229. The
printer

cost me $699, but I believe it has dropped to ~$500.

For one with network look at the HL1430 at a RRP of $499 is a good buy,
it has USB and Parallel interface, and has software for OsX.

The Brothers are good laser printers - I have a HL1240. USB only, but
if all the machines on the network are OSX (or all OS9), you can share
the printer. I concur that you get excellent mileage on the drums and
toner - excellent value for money.

Harris Technologies sell a Samsung brand printer that looks
suspiciously like the brother for a lot cheaper. Might be worth
investigating.

Regards,
Paul.

It probably hasn't. Internet e-mail has many analogies with postal mail.
With postal mail: I can write a letter to someone, put "Yours sincerely,
Ronda Brown" at the bottom, and mail it. Same thing with e-mail. It's
fraudulent, but possible nevertheless. With postal mail, it would be
pretty obvious that I hadn't used your signature to sign the letter.
However, hardly anyone signs their e-mail (it's a crypotgraphic
process). So...the fact that your address is being "used" doesn't
actually mean your accout has been compromised -- it just means someone
is claiming your own address as the 'sender' of their e-mail. It is very
common for Internet worms (some of which are now associated with spam)
to do this. I know I personally receive lots and lots of these "mail
delivery failed" messages, and have done for years.

I have a business website and am getting emails from people like
www.SeekerCenter.net who want me to pay for their services < submits your

I would like to have that happen but am sure using such people is not the
way to go.

Is there an easier way or reliable local people to deal with? Or can I do
it myself in some way? Am a novice in these matters.

It's Altronics, 1-300-797007 phone.

They have lots of good gear. We got our security cameras from there, but
they have almost everything.
