Re: Is it just me, or does Apple seem to let golden opportunitiesslip by?
You are right - Apple do have a proud history of making great computers but not wanting people to know about them. I have spent the day grappling with MS Access on a PC so I KNOW that Apple make great computers! I'm back on my iMac now :-)) I am surprised that there are a number of web sites that don't work on a Mac, which may be poor design, but Apple should have a guru around to the site's developer to try and fix it. The old chestnut used to be that You can't get software for Macs'. The new one will be - You can't access web sites - and that will really hurt sales. Apple do seem to not want to tell too many people about their product. Apple have a proud history of this. Can anyone say No viruses? Apple don't seem to be able to. and for good reason actually - brag about it in big ad copy or in the media and someone will take it upon themselves to prove you wrong. This is the kind of message that they are best off letting the converted preach to their peers Apple's main line now in selling the iMac G5 is From the makers of the iPod. Big deal. actually it is a big deal iPod is Apples most successful product sales wise and because of it's extreme portability the most widely known and most recognised* current product - remember most potential iPod to iMac (or iBook or what ever) upgraders weren't even born when the original mac came out so the revolutionary computer for the masses is simply the computer their father might have used. *I've seen so many people with iPod headphones that on closer attention are plugged in to tape/walkmen or flashdrive MP3 players that the mere sight of the white ear buds installs instant cred upon the user. -- ~ Mark Secker Computer Support Officer ph#6488 1855 (ECEL) mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] University of Western Australia - CRICOS Provider No. 00126G ~ Only he who attempts the absurd is capable of achieving the impossible. - Miguel de Unamuno It takes an idiot to do cool things that's why it's cool - Haruhara Haruka (FLCL) http://ecel-mark.ecel.uwa.edu.au/~marksecker/index.htm (sometimes works)
Re: Office 2004 - Worth the upgrade?
From: Matt Morgan [EMAIL PROTECTED] As it's quite an expensive upgrade, it doesn't sound like it should be top of my priority list. I have actually found quite a number of features that would help justify purchasing it for me (if it weren't already covered by our MS site license :-) If your workplace uses Outlook and Exchange server then it is a very important upgrade to get Entourage 2004 which works with Exchange much better than Entourage vX. For example, the Calendar now works for sending and receiving meeting requests etc. As mentioned by Paul, the dual screen mode in Powerpoint is great in many situations (I use it all the time). Being able to preview the upcoming slide before displaying it on the big screen as well as being able to scroll through miniatures of your entire slideshow and click on a slide to jump there immediately on the big screen can be very useful in the conference, church or dual presenter situation. The new beautiful fully-customisable soft-edged translucent drop shadows option for text and graphics in Powerpoint is gorgeous and allows you to do away with having to use Photoshop to create such pro effects (looks like they're responding to the heat from Apple's Keynote). Changing the transparencies of just about anything is also great for creating just the right kind of look. The notebook mode in Word with it's better implementation of audio recording looks like it might be good for those doing audio transcribing etc. The Compatibility checker has also proved useful every time I've exchanged docs with PC users. Some problems I've encountered with Powerpoint 2004 is the fact that I couldn't get hyperlinks to other ppt docs working properly and some ppts transferred over from the PC had particular transition effects that worked beautifully smoothly on the PC but stuttered and jerked horribly on an iBook 800 768MB/40GB and yet were just as bad on my PowerBook G4 1.25GHz with 2GB of RAM and a 5400rpm 80GB HD. Mind you - these effects might have been just as bad or even worse in Powerpoint vX. The slightly slower performance of all the Office 2004 apps compared to Office vX is also a pain - and of course Office XP is a lot snappier than both. :-( Thank goodness word processing isn't so performance critical as some apps. -Mart -- Martin Hill, Digital Media Specialist Information Management Services, Curtin University of Technology mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED], web: http://is.curtin.edu.au/ims.cfm Mb: 0417-967-969 wk: (08)9266-3101 Fax: (08)9266-3826
Re: Office 2004 - Worth the upgrade?
Hi, well I like it, but brought it at the Academic price. I think the Project Centre and note taking features are worth the upgrade, plus the new Powerpoint stuff. So, depends on you, and also how much you have to pay. In the general, non gaming, home computing environment their is pretty much a practical answer to all desktop applications on Windows machines... the real problem is accessing and using corporate it services (ie through the web) were the developers are so bound and tied in to the zombie chanted Microsoft IS the standard mantra. the guys that designed the University Credit Union website back a few years ago are friends of mine.. the system ALWAYS ALWAYS had problems with macs using the system particularly not informing Mac users that their password was about to expire and then not allowing them to change their password if they did know it was about to expire. Then I asked Gary about this he said that only 5% of people use macs so they weren't bothering to pre test on macs only patch and fix it if and when they got complaints... trouble is at that time UWA was around 25 to 30% macs so they got A LOT of complaints.

Then I asked Gary about this he said that only 5% of people use macs so they weren't bothering to pre test on macs only patch and fix it if and when they got complaints... This is pretty typical of web developers. I generally believe it's cheaper to get it right the first time wrt compatibility than to have to go back and re-implement to the mistakes. Guy Sabastion on an iMac? pass me the Dell catalogue! I wish that were true. Sebastion's second album is high on the charts, you can't turn a radio on without hearing him, Shannon Droll or people whinging how the latest evictee was robbed. And 2.38 Million people tuned in to Sunday's show. People with musical taste may not approve, but there are a squillion teenyboppers out there txting their votes to Idol and making the producers and Ten very rich! Other than maybe Deltra Goodroom, there are no other artists in Australia that can match the exposure these 'artists' (and I use the term very loosely!) are getting. I suspect the holdup with the Australian ITMS is more likely the music companies than Apple. As far as advertising bucks go, remember that Australia commands something like 5% or less of Apple's market. Whether that's cause or effect of a lack of advertising, who knows? Have fun, Shay I guess it depends on how hungry Apple are to increase that market share. Its great that kids know what an iPod is, but for them is there any great reason to swap from a PC to a Mac? All the good games their mates are playing are available first, all the chat programs come with full features (not the cobbled ones the mac gets), and iTunes is on the PC. Kids know how to deal with viruses (they seem to create most of them too!). Maybe the attack should happen now, before Longhorn finally rears its ugly head. As much as we hate to admit it, Windows has become more mac-like with each iteration. Why change? We know the answer, but the other 95% don't seem to know! I do agree that the Apple presence in Melbourne is pretty good. There are 2 stores in the city centre alone, and lots of advertising. I'm sure all the advertising in Perth will really pick up going into the Christmas buying period! Seeya Rod!

Request for Reseller Details
Hi all I realize Apple has their official Reseller Locator on their site but they don't cover resellers who don't meet their criteria. From reading previous posts to this list I'm sure you know people who do a great job both for Mac users and groups but can't get listed. I've set up a reseller locator on my Australian Mac Users Group site and would like to get these people included. I don't want to replicate Apples list but I do want good resellers listed. If anyone knows of people who they think should be listed could they please email me off list at [EMAIL PROTECTED] and include in the emails the Resellers name or shop name whichever is appropriate along with their full address (including postcode) ,phone number and website address. If you don't know all the details any info would be a help. Thanks in advance Greg Sharp President/Webmaster Australian Mac Users Group
