Re: USB mics?

2005-05-11 Thread Stephen Chape
Funny you should bring this up just now Stewart because my wife's son
has been working in the UK for about 6 years and has just moved to the
United Arab Emirates.

The variation in phone rates has forced us both to recently to adopt
Skype.
He has found that the built-in microphone on my eMac is not very good
with Skype.
Because he uses a PC, he has bought a Logitech USB Microphone and I
must say the clarity on this end is really very good.

Consequently I have been looking at prices for these. They seem to vary
between $31.00 and $50 at online sites, and delivery is always extra.
There is also a Verbatim model for about $13 but I don't think it is
USB and I don't know how good it is.

The other thing is that Skype have indicated that video is high on
their wish list, so in the near future it might be worth investing in
an iSight webcam which also has a built in microphone. I don't really
want to invest in a microphone twice.

I am still deliberating this one.

Hi Stewart

I've supplied to clients (and use myself) either of the following:-
Usb MAcMice MicFLex microphone - $95
Logitech USB Headphone and Mic Headset - $49 upwards

Both of these work fine. I quite like the Logitech one as it sits on your
head and works well with lots of other programs.

I hope that info helps. Email me if you'd like more details.

Thanks!

that a pretty cool app but I notice it only comes up with one iPod

use something like Cocktail

you will have to manually find and copy the belkin created item as

alternatively and not pretty at all but

go to terminal

type the full path to the iPods "hidden" music folders

then manually search the sub directories for the audio files
created by the Belkin then copy them to somewhere above the
"iPod_Control " or your main hard disk so they show up as visible.

alternatively you could script it with a unix find piped to a unix
copy (or direct the find to a file - open and edit it and then use
the file for a Unix copy) then run it through Tigers Automator to
run whenever the ipod mounts (probably)

Hi Stew,

I just recently joined Skype users. Having a mac you can't get cheap
mics for use with Skype because the mac needs an amplified mic (or
something like that, I don't know the technical terms). All I know is
that I had to get a Logitech headphones and mic or an iMic (both $80
and up).

Anyway, the Logitech works well and so does Skype. Sorry, I don't know
any cheaper way.

iPod woes since Tiger & iTunes 4.8

2005-05-11 Thread Michael Hawkins
Before Tiger, I used my iPod with Belkin Voice Recorder as a dictaphone and,
after connecting the iPod to my PowerBook, could email my work as a sound
attachment for my secretary to type.

I can't get that to happen since installing Tiger and updating to iTunes 4.8

The select "enable disc use" option in the preferences is ticked, but greyed
out.

The voice memo doesn't appear if I click on the iPod icon on my desktop, but
shows up as if it is a song in the source bar in iTunes.

I suspect that Apple in its kindly, paternalistic way has done this to stop
any transfer from iPods to computers and in its dictatorial mode has not
warned anyone that this is what it has done.

Does any-one have a work around?

I presume you mean Outlook Express...

It depends on which version of OE you are running. The mailboxes will
be in the Identities folder, but this can be located in either the
Documents Folder (look inside Microsoft Data) or inside the folder
containing the OE application.

CommPost: Zytech specials

2005-05-11 Thread Greg Satti

Hi all!

Samsung has introduced a Serial ATA II hard disk drive boasting twice
the speed of SATA I hard drives. The drives, available in 80, 120 &
160GB versions run at 3GB per second (300MB data rate on the bus), spin
at 7200rpm and have an 8.9 millisecond average seek time and an 8MB
cache buffer. The drives also feature Native Command Queuing (NCQ)
allowing the drives to multitask.

The NCQ feature has been available in SCSI based products for some
time, and may be the key in prompting users to switch from SATA I to II.
NCQ will allow the drive to accept a queue of commands like bringing up
5 blocks of data, and put them in the appropriate order.

The drives are approximately half the cost of SCSI making them
extremely price attractive as well. No doubt the technology will
gradually make its way across to other manufacturers and eventually
into PC's.

In the last few day Apple has released iTunes 4.8. It includes new
Music Store features and support for transferring contacts and
calendars from your computer to your iPod (requires Mac OS X version
10.4 on your computer). If your version hasn't been updated from
'Software update' you can grab it from here:

Heard about Tiger? Well of course you have! This review talks about how
