Unfortunately, this may not necessarily work, especially in Tiger. If
there are no plugins available, Safari 2 will use its own built-in
PDF viewing features.

The Terminal approach is the only one which works. I just wish they'd
build this stuff into the Preferences screen to make it easier.

Re: Safari quits again

2005-10-31 Thread Derek Yeoh-Ellerton

Hi Eugene and WAMUG folks.

Here is my post from August on the topic of Safari quitting at launch...

--

I've found that several machines I've updated with the security update
2005-007 (Panther), running 10.3.9, exhibit similar behaviour to what
you are describing. I found the issue was with Mail, and Safari. I
hadn't opened iTunes on the specific machines. But the problem sounds
very similar.

I recommend being very careful with the 007 security updates... There
are numerous Apple forum discussion articles about people having
similar problems. Especially with Mac OS X 10.3.9 (I've updated 10.4.2
machines, without issue).

What most people notice first is that Safari or some other key Apple
applications stop working.

Check into your log files using an application such as Console. Check
out what the most recent messages are. Also, check
~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter log.

I found on several machines that some core files were missing or upset,
as mentioned in these logs. These included the Java Virtual Machine.
Hence why the application wouldn't launch. E.g...

---
dyld: /Applications/Safari.app/Contents/MacOS/Safari can't open
library: /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/A/JavaVM

---

Check out some of these URLs to see if the symptoms match:

http://discussions.info.apple.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]@.68b6bc6f
http://discussions.info.apple.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]@.68b6f349/
24

(those lines might wrap, and any %20 text to be removed from the URL)

In the particular cases I experienced at the end of last week, I found
some careful work with Pacifist (to extract certain parts of
installers) resolved the issues, without requiring an OS install.

Keep in mind, that if you try to install, say, the Java update that is
already installed, the Mac OS won't let you do it. But if you use
Pacifist to do the work, you can force install any update. (So, be
careful!)

In total, the tools I used were:

-Disk Utility
-Pacifist, along with these Mac installers:
-Mac OS X 10.3.9 installer
-Java 1.42 update 1
-Java 1.42 update 2
-Java Startup update 10.3.9

Before you attempt any fix, first make sure this is the same problem,
by looking at your log files.

Secondly, back up any work before proceeding.

Some authors in the Apple discussions recommend reinstalling the OS was
the only solution. This *wasn't* necessary. But some careful work
with Pacifist, and some restarts in between, was. Your mileage may vary
though.

(The restarts in between updates is very important).

Hope that helps.

Cheers,
Derek

Small Business Accounts App

2005-10-31 Thread Greg Manzie

Hello WAMUGgers,

Can anyone please recommend a small business accounts application for
my mac?

Details are roughly as follows;

Running OS 10.4.2 on a G4 400 Yikes PCI graphics, 1 Gig RAM. 30 Gig
internal HD and 128 Gig firewire HD.

A small one person business with about 30 cash sales transactions per
month.
Similar number of purchases, mainly petty cash, but including some
accounts.

Registered for GST and have a turnover around $50,000 per annum.
Two bank accounts.

Currently using Kalamazoo one write system (a manual system like
dentists used to use). This has served me very well for 20 years.
The simplicity of the system is very attractive. But it is difficult
to correct mistaken entries.

No staff wages.
Sole trader status.
GST is the only complicating factor.

I have looked briefly at MYOB (seems too sophisticated), iBank (may
be the answer) and a couple of others.

Have asked accountants, but they are PC users.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you in anticipation.

Safari - secure connections fail

2005-10-31 Thread Greg Pennefather
Dear all

Since yesterday I have not been able to connect to web sites using https.
Safari reports that it can't make a secure connection. The 2 sites I have
tried are Bankwest and eTrade. I connect to these sites daily and they have
been working fine for years.

I have used Firefox 1.5 to connect successfully to both.

I have restarted my Ti PB 550 running OS X 10.3.9 and repaired permissions
with no improvement.

Does anyone have any ideas how to get this working again? Or why it would
have stopped yesterday given that I haven't changed anything on my machine?

Thanks for your help

Fwd: iTunes Music Store Gift card

2005-10-31 Thread Gwen

Hello.

because, I didn't receive any answer last week, I repost my request.

I am not an Australian user, but a French one.

I have visit the new Australian iTunes music store and like in some
other country, it's possible to have a free song every weeks. because
I don't live in Australia, it's impossible for me to subscribe to
this store and get this song.

The only solution that I have fond to download for an iTms from an
other country, is to open an account with a Gift certificates. and
when the credit is over, I still have the possibility to download the
free song every week like I do for the US or Japan store.

So, I'm writing to this list to find someone who can send me this
type of Gift certificate. For sure, I will pay for everything (Maybe
with Pay-Pall).

Also, if someone from Australia want to have a French account, I can
also send a Gift certificate from my country.

Thanks.

Gwen.

Just to let the list know ...

I posted my problem on the Apple Discussion Forum and just received an
answer. This fixed the problem. So, if anyone is having this problem or
has it in the future, here is the solution kindly provided by Jeff Calebaugh

This is a frequently reported problem. Hope Apple takes notice soon.

Move the file named System.Keychain in /Library/Keychains/ folder to your
desktop;
Restart your computer. Your computer will generate a new System.Keychain.
Run Keychain First Aid (Keychain AccessWindowKeychain First Aid)
If that solves your problem, trash the keychain on your desktop.

Worked for me. Hope it works for you.

Jeff

Hi,

We're finally moving to broadband, and have a G4 tower, 466, graphite

What's required for my G4 to connect to a wireless router?

I don't really know anything about them, so if anyone can suggest one

I suggest that if you want a song, search for it on iTMS Oz. That way
Apple could take the logs to whichever distributor and say Hey, you
could have made this much money if you let us sell your stuff.

This may be somewhat more of a deeper problem than Safari. I just had a squiz

I read somewhere today about some big problems sending to MSN Hotmail

these broadband ISP's went crazy with all these mails in their relay cues
and they have blocked both sites till it is sorted out. Perhaps there's some

Hi Greg

MYOB do have a simpler version called MYOB FirstEdge which allows you
to invoice out to clients (if you need to) but only treats expenditure
on a cash basis, ie no invoices received, only payments made. It is
easy to use and being an MYOB product, accountants like it.

This sells for $98.98 at Officeworks if they have old stock (supposed
to have increased at 1/10/05 and they would probably sell at ~ $132)

I can get it for you at $90 inc GST at the moment (while old stock
lasts).

It is cross platform compatible which means if you need to get it to
your Accountant, if you have one, all you need to do is add a .dat
extension to the file name email/burn etc
