Merge fields are drawing their data from a source separate from the Word document, so in order for them to work you also need access to that data source. Without it the document is not of much use Should the sender be treating the document any special way before attaching it to email ? According to Word's Help file: 1. Open the main document from which you want to remove the data source. 2. On the Tools menu, click Data Merge Manager. 3. Click Create under Main Document, and then click Restore to Normal Word Document. This removes the document's dependence on the data source. -- Peter HinchliffeApwin Computer Services FileMaker Pro Solutions Developer Perth, Western Australia Phone (618) 9332 6482Fax (618) 9332 0913 Mac because I prefer it -- Windows because I have to.
TV guide for EyeTV now in Aust
At last those of us using the Elgato EyeTV DVR solution to record TV shows using a Mac have an Electronic Program Guide available to make scheduling TV shows into the Elgato software a point and click affair. http://www.islayer.net/viewWidget.php?id=16 IceTV, a Mac OS X 10.4 widget has been released that integrates with the IceTV service to provide a subscription based automated scheduling system. http://www.icetv.com.au/ The only issue is the subscription costs $3 per week though a 14 day trial is available. It's a shame the free TitanTV service that EyeTV users enjoy in the UK and the USA isn't available here in Australia but at least there is an option now. I'm just trying to work out if being able to schedule a recording into EyeTV with a zip into Dashboard and single mouse click instead of the current process of go to TV guide webpage, copy and paste name of show, enter channel, enter time and date hit okay is worth $156 per year. I don't know - maybe at $30 per year I could justify it myself. :-( I think I'll need to sign up for the free 14-day trial to see if I can't bear to go back to the more manual method. So what does everyone else think? -Mart -- Martin Hill mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] homepages: http://mart.ozmac.com Mb: 0417-967-969 hm: (08)9314-5242
11 NBC TV shows now on Apple iTMS
Speaking of TV shows, NBC and the SciFi channel have now joined Disney's Lost and Desperate Housewives and signed on to provide 11 of their TV shows for purchase at US$1.99 per episode on Apple's iTunes Music Store including: Battlestar Galactica (the new remake) Monk Law Order The Office Surface Late Night with Conan O'Brien The Tonight Show with Jay Leno And a few old classic shows: Dragnet (50's cop show) Knight Rider (Kit the car!) Alfred Hitchcock Presents Adam-12 (classic police drama) ESPN and Fox sound like they'll be next. Apple said Tuesday that it has now sold more than 3 million videos from its iTunes store since launching the feature in early October, indicating that customer demand extended beyond simple one-time curiosity. Not bad for 2 months (6 million dollars ain't too shabby). Looks like Apple may indeed have a chance of repeating it's music success in the TV sphere. I wonder when any of these will make it to the Australian store. *sigh* http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20051206/tc_nm/media_apple_nbc_dc -Mart

The manual method works fine for me too, just the laziness factor can sometimes makes me miss a show or two. The other thing missing with the widget is that you can't set up a repeating schedule. For example, your show is on Monday's at 7.30pm for the next 13 weeks. Its promising, but I would have been happy with the eyetv bit in the free one day version. I think we were gipped :-( Seeya Rod!

Seeya Rod! PS XBox already does a media player, but no pvr capabilites. You have to pre-record or stream. And I think Front Row will be all about buying movies/tv shows from iTMS, rather than playing digital tv :-(

it would seem to be a simple query but how do you create a formula in FMpro 8 that will calculate ages accurately - all the options/ permutations of DATE functions i have tried have a problem with leap- years ie they will calculate ages accurately for birth-dates _not_ in a leap-year but for those people born in a leap-year, they have to wait for an extra day to grow older. so, eg: if someone had a birthday yesterday, born in 2000 they would not be calculated to be 5 years old until today whereas someone born on 6/12/2001 would have had their 4th birthday yesterday. i haven't tested this for birth-dates pre-Feb 29 but would suspect they might be OK? (i even tried to make allowance for the 100-year discrepancy) is this a FM problem per se? or just my own inadequacy? is there a simple solution or does it require a somewhat complex calculation to account for leap-years? (Excel also seems to have the same problem.) incidentally, if anyone would like a copy of FMpro 6, i have one (with manuals etc) - quite legitimate as i upgraded to 8 with a full version. peter meyer 0408 902349 [EMAIL PROTECTED]

From: Antony N. Lord [EMAIL PROTECTED] I've been looking at http://www.byopvr.com/ for some time - pitty there aren't more people doing Mac based versions. Yeah - I can't find any Mac stuff on that site. Here're some other options for Mac Media Centre stuff: http://www.centerstageproject.com/ http://sourceforge.net/projects/itheater/ Early days yet though. Oh for a Front Row 2.0 with plug-ins. :-) Out of interest - do you watch you recorded TV on your monitor, pipe it elsewhere in the house or have the Mac in you lounge room? We watch mainly on the screen of the 17 iMac G5 on the coffee table in the lounge which is dedicated as our main home computer with the EyeTV and a 250GB firewire disk attached. (my wife and I both have PowerBooks for personal/work stuff) The iMac runs our entire music and photo libraries as well and is plugged into the surround sound system and a cheap data projector for those times we want movies/TV on the big screen. The iMac also runs the $30 Evocam Security camera software with a cheap webcam and emails a photo of anyone who comes to the front door. Quite handy. We sometimes pipe the video elsewhere in the house, but VLC streaming video over Airport Extreme to the Powerbooks is still not up to scratch performance-wise. Too much stuttering video. Probably have to wait for the next WiFi standard 802.11n I have exported a lot of recordings from EyeTV and built up a library of movies we haven't watched yet burned to data DVD (can fit 2 movies per DVD-R using H264 even without being bothered to edit the ads out). Works well. -Mart
backup software
Hi can anyone recommend a cheap ( read free) backup system, I just want to copy users home files to a firewire disk automatically ( say twice a week) for DR purposes. I don't need apps or Os backup up, but there seems to be a myriad of programs on places like versiontracker, how does one choose? Firefox 1.5 (was: Re: Safari consuming 100% CPU/RAM in 10.4?)
From: Martin Hill [EMAIL PROTECTED] G'day again everyone, Just wondering if anyone else has been finding Safari starts eating RAM and processor cycles if left running for too long with lots of windows and tabs open? Spinning beachball of death forever. :-( Well, I've switched to the new Firefox 1.5 which imported all of my bookmarks, cookies and history from Safari and it is blazingly fast in comparison to Safari even when opening exactly the same set of 20 or more tabbed web pages. Switching pages, going back and forward between links, loading new pages - all things that caused distinct pauses and the spinning beachball when more than a few pages were open in Safari all now happen instantly. Loading MacSurfer.com is soo much less painful. Looks like Apple is going to have to do a lot of work to lure me back to Safari. -Mart

iTunes Single Play Concert Success: What we did - Yay!
Dear WAMUGgers Thank you all for your recent helpful advice re playing single items in iTunes at our school concert. We had the concert today and it was fantastic. We got great feedback from the parents, staff and of course our rockin' rollin' kiddies! For your knowledge this is what we did. Firstly we unchecked the tick boxes in the playlist so each track would play and stop without the next one starting. The kids (my little techie group) went through the various visualisers and chose several different ones for different tunes. The plan was to choose each visualiser then run the separate tunes accordingly with the kids singing alongside and the visualiser projecting onto the big screen behind (actually next to them as it turned out). Then I decided we needed something even simpler. It would have been nice to have different visualisers but really we didn't need that complication. KISS is a good policy when it comes to these things I believe. Brian had suggested G-Force as a good visualiser and as I had a basic copy already installed I went to the website http:// www.soundspectrum.com/ and discovered that I could download a Gold or Platinum version if I paid good money to them (PayPal). Rob suggested Gaslight which is very nice too. However I went with G-force this time. Does Gaslight have the options I detail below? For around Au$40 I could download the latest full version of G-Force, a Standalone Version and Sound Spectrum Darkroom. More on these soon. Maybe a bit much for a visualiser but hey, this could be interesting. $40 is not a bad investment for a successful end of year concert, especially when we're going to run it on a Mac in an all PC school. It's tax deductible too! So I paid for it, got my registration code and downloaded the software. Here's what happened: Sound Spectrum Darkroom allowed us to save each single track as a self-contained Quicktime movie, complete with G-Force Visualiser. This produced some really great effects with original quality - I kept the music format as .aiff and used no compression. (720 x 576 is the maximum screen resolution for $40 but that's quite Ok for a visualiser) We put all the tracks into a desktop folder and when all were selected and opened together they layered nicely in the finder window. We learnt to prefix each numerically in reverse order, allowing the first item of the concert to appear in the front in the layer. Eg with 8 tracks we numbered the first one *8 We Will Rock You* so it would appear at the front of the stack. (Think about that for a minute. We needed to, before discovering the logic of this move!) Techie Yr 7 kid then needed simply to click on the front window, click Apple/Cmd-F and the music, complete with visualiser opened to full screen and played to the end. Any mistake could be solved with *Space Bar - Escape*. We never needed this as it eventuated. With the PowerBook hooked into the school's old but great Yamaha 6 channel mixer/amp and big bore Yami speakers, we lifted the seagulls off the roof, and the grannies out of their seats - truly - we could see the shadows of the gulls walking across the skylight panels - funny indeed - and the grannies? Well...! Now the piece-de-resistance: G-Force Standalone rocks! It has a keyboard command interface that could be more user friendly, as it took me a long time trawling the FAQs and instructions to find this solution, but having done that it worked perfectly! Simply put, with various keyboard commands you can open it to a range of screen sizes and resolutions, and vary the input sound devices. By setting it to 1152 x 768 resolution and sound input being set to the PowerBook internal microphone, we were then able to run this software visualiser for live sound in the hall. Imagine the kid's surprise seeing their voices being projected onto the big screen when singing the National Anthem. They sang louder than ever, a great motivator I thought!. Then when our pedantic music teacher plonk-rocked away on the piano, it too was visualised on the big screen. The kids playing their glockenschpiedelhunds noticed too. We refrained from running it during the boss's big speech but were tempted. He may not have fully understood what was going on behind him. Anyway, thank you all for your help in getting this done. We had a great day. I'm happy to share more information with anyone interested, on or off- list. Regards Reg PS Yay, the kiddies go home tomorrow to be with mummies and daddies and carers for Christmas.

D-Link DSL-300
I have a D-Link DSL-300 connected to my iMac and it works well. I also have a G4 Powerbook which I want to occasionally connect to it. I plug it in and go for Automatic configurations but it will not connect. I have manually entered the exact IP address and Subnet Mask and Router numbers into the TCP/IP but it will not connect. Using Internet Explorer I have got into the DSL account configuration and entered the username and password exactly as on the iMac but when I click OK it comes up saying there is not enough room and my existing iMac account must be deleted. I do this but without success and have to re-enter all the information again on the iMac when I want to connect it. However it works on my son's wireless set-up and configures it self automatically. He also has a D-Link 300 connected via Airport. Is the D-Link limited in any way? It only has one ethernet plug space. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Lloyd --
