Hi Lloyd,
You could check out Audio Hijack http://www.rogueamoeba.com/
audiohijack/ . I understand It lets you record any audio that goes
through your Mac as AIFF.

You can pull any audio from DVD Player. When using Audio Hijack,
you'll either need to use the Start A New File Every X option, or
you'll get one big AIFF file.

With Audio Hijack Pro, you can use the Split button to manually split
the recording into multiple files, as you record.

I forgot to add in my previous email, you will need to register Audio

Audio Hijack is currently unregistered. Be sure not to make any long

Final Cut Pro.

Also did you utilise the S video connection from VCR to DV camera,

Beneath Southern Seas-Jon Davison

2006-01-04 Thread Ronda Brown
Congratulations to Jon Davison of http://www.eyeinthesky.com.au/
and WAMUG for another great book.

The Book 'Beneath Southern Seas, The Silent Service' is a visual
portrayal of the world of the Australian submarine force element
group seen through the eyes of photographer Jon Davison and writer
Tom Allibone.

Commander of the Australian Navy Submarine Group, Commodore Ric
Shalders, launched the book last week at HMAS Stirling, Garden Island.

The open access granted to the authors by the Royal Australian Navy
has culminated in a collection of images and interviews that give an
intimate look at the unique world of submariners.

The book is based on 40 thought-provoking and illuminating interviews
with people who make up the unusual occupation.
Through their words, the readers discover what it is that makes a
person become a submariner

The Book is published by UWA Press.

I purchased Jon's book 'Beneath Southern Skies' for my Dad not long
before he died.
My Dad served in the RAAF during World War Two. He enjoyed this
book so much.

I will be purchasing your new book Jon.

Congratulations again.

Best Wishes,

 Final Cut Pro.

Another option would be to look at the various plugins available for iMovie
(cheap - some of them even free...)

Google iMovie plugins.

A good starting point is Stupendous Software :

They have colour effects as well as Levels and Balances.

Probably not as good an option as FCP, but a fair bit cheaper!

Disk Warrior 3.0.3 Need Help!

2006-01-04 Thread McCallum Malcolm
My wife has an iMac 1GHz PowerPC G4 256 MB DDR SDRAM Running OS
10.4.3 This has been running well until New Years Eve we were
invaded by Teenagers, one of which simply wanted to lookup her
email. :-( On New Years Day the iMac seem to be running rather
slowly so I thought I would run 'Disk Warrior' 3.0.3. All goes well
until one gets to stage 5 'Locating directory data' ,rebuilding
directory and the indicator bar is about 55% across the screen and
then it stops and nothing more happens. The disk can be heard going
and the scroll bar 'shakes' but does not progress. It then complains
that it is going slowly because of shortage of Ram (!) and it can
be left for hours and nothing more happens.

I have repaired permissions and done fsck -fy and prayed to Allah but
no Joy.

The iMac seems to perform OK and is maybe a little quicker since I
have 'doctored it' but I do not like the fact that I cannot run Disk
Warrior.

Disk Warrior runs normally on my iBook.

Anyone any suggestions please

I would go with Disk Utility again and do a Verify Disk. If this reports
any problems then follow the instructions at the top of the Disk Utility
First Aid tab - boot from your OS X 10.4 CD/DVD and choose Disk Utility from
the Utilities (?) menu. Then you can repair the disk if it is within Disk
Utility's power to do so. This utility from Apple has been getting better
and better - I think it was Martin who was extolling its virtues a few days
ago.

If nothing else this might clean things up enough for DW to run properly.

Hope this helps

I would not worry about DiskWarrior and go with Apples Disk Utility
and verify disk. Boot machine with start-up disk and utilise from
their to make sure it is actually fixing root, also this is where
DiskWarrior should be working with root partition.

Also check how much free space is on root partition i.e. Macintosh HD
or whatever the partition is now known as.

Reference sources with Apples Discussion boards another possible source.

Hi WAMUGgers

For those interested in Skype for Mac, have a look at this:

The Fly.1 hands free phone is to be announced Jan 5-8 http://
www.ipevo.com/ces/. Read here http://www.ipevo.com/news01.jsp
It could be worth waiting for. ipevo has a mac driver at http://

It will be announced at the International CES Conference http://
www.cesweb.org/default_flash.asp in Las Vegas starting Jan 5th US time!

This would be a very interesting conference to attend. May be next year?

I found about this at http://news.zdnet.com/
2100-1035_22-6016239.html?tag=nl.e589 as apparently I checked a
newsletter box at the ZDNet website last week when researching VoIP!

Photo recovery application

2006-01-04 Thread J Philippe Chaperon
Dear WAMUG'ers,

Can someone recommend an OS X application that may retrieve my lost photos
from a couple of SD memory cards? Photo rescue or something to that effect.

I came back from an overseas holidays to find that all the photos saved to
two of my three SD cards were 'inexistent'. Do not know if all the airport
security detectors/scanners could have damaged them. I know that I did not
delete them, and prior to removing the cards from my camera some 2 weeks ago
the photos were still visible and could be reviewed.

I'm hoping that somewhat I can retrieve them.

Alternatively, is there a reliable place I can take my cards to?

Many thanks,

Re: iTunes and Gracenote, and now cerebrities

2006-01-04 Thread Reg Whitely

Hi Paul, intrepid WAMUGers and cerebrities in 2006,

Of course people who don't buy CDs or are into less cerebral music
might not
appreciate when there are errors and ommisions. I do also
understand that

there are a great many people who see no reason to be meticulous about
anything. I guess that's modern times for you. We see it in many
other

areas about us.

Is the antithesis of 'cerebral' 'acerebral'? Perhaps so. This is
substantiated, to some extent, by Peter Bowler, in his delightful
book A Superior Person's Little Book of Words, Hawthorn Press,
Australia, 1982 . in this he comments that a superior person's
discourse may be larded with esoteric pejoratives, grandiloquisms,
and cacophemisms.

The book's blurb suggests that those who lack this arcane lore need
no longer feel inferior. Help is now at hand with this fascinating
compilation of some five hundred little-known and impressive words,
complete with suggestions for using them in polite conversation to
confuse, astonish, secretly insult or simply stupefy your friends,
enemies and relatives.

Bowler's description of acerabral is without a brain. A word for
which there would at first sight appear to be no use, since no entity
to which there would be any point in applying the term could in fact
possess this attribute... However, recent researches into the
central nervous system of the wire-haired terrier have conclusively
demonstrated the need for such a word.

Interesting indeed.

Gracenote users beware.

Regards

Reg
