Hi Mark. As a photographer, i have always called this localised, or  
spot colour. A number of ways of doing this. As Ray mentioned,
layers, but use the Eraser (E) to rub out and reveal the colour  
beneath. Make sure that you change the Opacity in the Layers

palette to see what colour you are revealing.

Another method is an Adjustment Layer (non-destructive editing), and  
is probably the most effective way. 'Layer - New Adjustment Layer -  
Hue/Saturation'. Desaturate the image. Make sure that you have black  
and white as your colours by hitting the 'D' key, then toggle with  
the 'X' key to get black. Choose your Paint Brush and start painting  
to reveal the colour. If you make a mistake, hit 'X' to choose White  
and undo. You can change the pressure of the brush, as well as the  
opacity of the Adjustment layer. Change the size of your brush with  
the { } brackets.

First of all I like to say HI as I have only joined a couple days ago.

Im not really sure what its called to keep one colour in the B/W photo
But when I create a B/W photo with part colour I use Layers.
I load the photo and create a second layer
The first layer I make B/W
The second is in colour and I make everything transparent except  
the lips

There are other ways but this works well for me

iMac Values

Hey Guys,

I have a 20" iMac that I'm contemplating selling.  What average prices
are they fetching these days?

The iMac has:
 20" Screen.
 250GB HDD.
 1GB RAM.
 1.8GHz G5.
 Fresh install of Tiger and iLife 6.

Any idea what I can expect as I rarely use it now that I have a
MacBook and could use the cash rather than a computer clogging up my
desk space!!

Hi I'm just passing on a correction to my earlier email after talking to
Fiona for a second time an hour or so ago.

Country customers will be able to use a return paid post pack for returns
however people in the city will have to go directly through a Authorised
Apple Service Provider (AASP).

Also the 10 days return time for faulty batteries is not from when the
customer receives the replacement battery but from the time the Authorised
Apple Service Provider (AASP) receives the faulty one from the customer.

She asked I refer people to Apple's web site FAQ on the problem at
http://www.apple.com/au/support/batteryexchange/2006/faq/
Mind you this wasn't 100% clear to me but maybe others won't have the same
problems interpreting what it says in relation to this problem.

I've also discovered I had an old 12 inch G3 iBook which had a replacement
battery installed about a year ago which is in the range of affected
batteries so I guess I'll have a chance to see first hand if there are
problems with the exchange process.

Likewise big brownie points for AppleCentre Joondalup. Lorelei will  
send the battery to me here in Geraldton when it finally arrives from  
Apple, unless I'm making one of our seemingly regular trips to Perth,  
then I mail the old battery back to them, fully discharged so as not  
to set fire to an Australia Post motorbike!

I know the "technical side" of the technique (and like most things in 
photoshop there are several ways of achieving much the same ends - 
and in Adobe Lightroom it's frightening easy using the HSL  blender )


I was just trying to explain the end result and the general 
principals to a friend and was stuck for an actual proper name of 
"style" of picture it creates.

I was told it was called "Key Colour"  if you keep the colour to B&W 
contrast of the picture normal, "high key colour if you " in over 
saturate the single colour  and "low key colour" if you reduce the 
single colour saturation  but keep it  above zero.


however I'm not finding any information googling "key colour (or "key color")

any idea?

Software Update

Hi Muggers,
 
 
Problem:
I cannot connect to Software Update, the error message returns:
'A networking error has occurred: timed out (-1001). Make sure you
can connect to the Internet and try again.'

Before you ask yes I can connect to the Internet (hence the email)
and network diagnostics recognizes this, so why not software update?
I am not behind a proxy and my firewall rules have not changed.
I last updated on the  9/08/2006 with the Security Update  22006-004
(Intel) (1.0)

Problem with MacPro supporting two Apple 20" screens.

Just a heads up for new MacPro owners.

Pity Apple did not put out a "advisory" re the included "special"  
video cable adapter (one end has a smaller width DVI to DVI adaptor)  
for the MacPro box to support TWO Apple 20" screens!


Gu after some cursing for 10 minutes I realized what its for..  
The "narrow" adapter lets you plug both screens in as the TWO  
"standard" plugs are too wide side by side!

Hi Clive,

Try booting up in Safe Mode with both drives connected.  Hold down the
Shift key on startup:



It may be an issue with the OS, rather than the drives itself.  At least
with Safe mode, you are running the bare essentials.

(Should still work for OS 9 - its extensions off).

Also, try resetting the PMU (Command-Option-P-R) or hitting the PMU
button on your logic board.

Thank you to Daniel & Robert for their suggestions, unfortunately the  
problem still exists. I have moved the HD in question to another  
computer where it was able to be seen and examined by the Disk  
Utility as having no faults yet when placed back in it's home  
computer it is not being seen when booted from CD and will not allow  
computer to boot at all when booting up from start up HD. Any other  
suggestions gratefully appreciated.

Try powering up with Option key held down until you get some options  
on your screen

Tom, have you upgraded to version 2 of EyeTV?  Version 1 which would have
come with your EyeTV doesn't require an activation code.  However, Version 2
is a paid upgrade and requires an activation code supplied by Elgato.
