MYOB for Mac
Hey everyone, I'm running the books for a student society next year and need some good accounting software for my mac. Does anyone have any pointers? Thanks, Christof S.
Encrypted disk images - OSX keeps wanting to mount.
Hi all, A little problem that's not serious but a real pain! Having read an article that creating an encrypted disk image was a good way to keep documents secure, I created one and put some files into it. This all went well, and the disk image mounted and unmounted OK. Initially, I had set up the disk password as my log-in password - so if I was logged into my account, I just double-clicked the .dmg file to mount the disk. This all seemed to work well for a while, until I noticed that OSX would just mount the disk, from time to time, without my launching it. I could just eject it to unmount, without problem - but then later I would notice that it had been mounted again. I decided that I would change the password and unchecked the remember password box, so that it would not mount unless I input the password. The trouble now is that OSX still keeps wanting to mount the disk and prompts me for my password - at annoyingly frequent times. I thought the problem might be spotlight wanting to index it so, with the disk mounted, I opened the Spotlight privacy prefs and dragged the disk image to the list. However, instead of the name appearing on the list there was the smoke puff like when you drag an icon from the dock and the disk was no longer listed in the finder window sidebar - though it was still listed with the other volumes if I clicked the computer icon in the sidebar. I have verified all disks, including the disk image, and repaired permissions - but the problem remains. I can't see the pattern as to what triggers the need to mount - I can just click cancel and everything proceeds as normal but it is VERY annoying. Any body got any idea as to WHY OSX wants to mount it? And/or hw to stop it. TIA Neil - Neil R. Houghton Albany, Western Australia Tel: +61 8 9841 6063 Fax: +61 8 9841 6137 Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: MYOB Premier to AccountEdge?
The Lacie drive (just an external HDD with an Ethernet connection) is connected to our network (plugged into router), and we connect to the network either view network cable or wireless. We then mount this disk as an attached drive (SMB), and can then open the .myo file (single user at a time, we don't have a multi-user licence). Accessing the disk is noticeably slower via wireless, but still quite Ok. MYOB has a delay when first opening the data file, but otherwise works fine. Glenn. Or one has to quit before the other can use it? If both can share at the same time, this would eliminate the need to parallels! The AccountEdge data file is either single user, in which case it can reside on the user's machine and only one person can access it at a time, or multiuser (comes with licence for 3 users) in which case MYOB have said the data file must reside on a separate drive. Glenn has kindly informed that he has the data file on a network attached Lacie drive. So three users with three Macs could share a data file on an external drive (and not require an extra Mac). I have not thought of that solution myself :( and no-one has suggested it so far to my knowledge from around Australia! So that's a good one Glenn!! Just to clarify that, Glenn, when you say a network attached Lacie drive, do you mean a drive attached directly to the network or attached to the Mac which is attached to the network? AccountEdge is one of the very few instances that I know of where the Mac community have come out on top price-wise. Premier with 3 user licence is being sold by Officeworks for $1495 while AccountEdge is priced at $595, which is the price for MYOB's Accounting Plus (single user, with Payroll). So while many may be using AE in single user mode for Payroll purposes, we do have the ability to expand it to multiuser (3) for no extra cost - unless it is true that MYOB have dropped multiuser for Mac (probably due to lack of interest?). On 24/11/2006, at 11:06 PM, Alex wrote: Hi Wamugians One thing to be aware of is that AccountEdge requires the data file to be on a hard drive that does not belong to any of the users' Macs (this is different to Premier where it can reside on a user's machine). Therefore 3 users require 4 Macs. The data file is cross platform compatible and only needs the Windows extension of .MYO to be included in the file name to be openable by the Win programme. There is no upgrade that takes place. There is no known way of migrating the customised invoices etc to the Mac or vice versa. I have seen an email this evening which claims that MYOB will be selling AccountEdge as a single user programme only in future but have not been able to confirm this yet. They would of course honour Premier to AccountEdge multiuser migrations. Cheers, Alex On 24/11/2006, at 3:14 PM, Holipac wrote: Rod, Just did this conversion recently. All your data is retained. The file format is readable by Mac and PC, so I just send off my data file to my accountant, and they load it up under Windows. When I switched to Account Edge, I just opened up the existing file ... there was some kind of automated upgrade that took place, but after that the file is still readable on Mac and Windows. Customised forms didn't make the conversion - so invoices that were setup as form layouts had to be rebuilt. Perhaps an expert could have migrated these. The functionality is basically the same - book-keepers who haven't used Account Edge before just sit down and use it. Regards, Glenn. On 24/11/2006, at 2:19 PM, Rod wrote: Hi All! Big question here, as I have to opportunity to swap out all our PCs at work to Macs :-) We currently run Premier MYOB on the PC. Can I import the file into AccountEdge on the Mac? Are there a lot of things we lose in the process? Are Premier and AccountEdge quite close in features? MYOB themselves don't seem to be a lot of help at the moment :-( Seeya Rod! Anyone want a Brother HL 1040 printer
Hi everyone, I have just had to replace my Brother HL 1040 because it started making a noise which seems to be associated with the drum/ toner cartridge. It has been a great work-horse for about 4 years or more. To replace the toner cartridge/drum cost $175 and I bought a new 2040 for $150. Someone with some practical skills or a spare drum unit might be able to fix this or use it. Still has toner in the unit. If not ,it goes to the great printer repair shop in the sky. Lloyd
Laser printer
My trusty Epson SP720 is showing signs of age and tiredness and I intend to replace it, probably with a laser printer. It is used for daily document printing and general office type work, often of multiple copies, requiring colour for letterheads and occasional embedded items. I would like a second tray for envelopes, as well as the usual A4, and a duplex tray would be nice but not vital. For high quality artwork up to A3+ size I have an Epson SP1290S (possibly soon to be upgraded) so the new printer need not compete anywhere in that area. Any recommendations and especially experiences both good and bad would be most welcome. Otherwise AccountEdge which has invoices out in, payroll, inventory.
